7 things we learned after 1,000+ moves in Virginia Beach 🚚
We're a local moving crew in Virginia Beach. After a few thousand moves across Hampton Roads, you start to see the same mistakes over and over. So here's the stuff we'd tell a friend before their moving day:
1. "We're almost done packing" is the most expensive sentence in moving. Most local movers charge by the hour. A fully packed home moves fast. A half-packed one… doesn't. Finish packing before the truck arrives.
2. Ask about travel time fees. Seriously. Some companies start the clock when they leave their warehouse. Others (like us) start it when the crew arrives at your door — no travel time or fuel charges within Hampton Roads. Same move, very different invoice.
3. You don't need to empty your dresser. Leave the clothes in the drawers. A good crew shrink-wraps and pads the whole thing. One less box to pack.
4. Summer + end of month = chaos. Virginia Beach's moving season is brutal (military moves keep it busy all year — NAS Oceana, Naval Station Norfolk). Book 2–4 weeks out minimum, 4–6 if it's June-August or a month-end weekend.
5. Third-floor walk-up? Say it upfront. Stairs, elevators, long parking lots — all of it affects your quote. Surprises on moving day help nobody.
6. Check the license. It's 2 minutes. Any legit Virginia mover has a DMV household goods license and SCC registration. (Ours: DMV #705, SCC #11306836.) If a company dodges the question — run.
7. Pay AFTER the job, not before. Big upfront cash deposits are a red flag. Reputable movers collect when the last box is in your new home.
