HC.05 Scents & Seasonal Changes

     Food souls may have a certain scent to them. Sometimes it can be literal but usually it’s something reminiscent of themselves. For example a dessert Food Soul may smell sweet or faintly of some ingredients within the dish itself. Tiramisu for example has an overall sweet scent with a touch of coffee. It brings about the image of a warm drink in a field of flowers. It’s a soothing one that isn’t overbearing, given her warm and friendly nature and gently wraps around the senses. Others such as Caviar and Seaweed Soup will smell like an ocean breeze. Raindrop Cake is perhaps fresh rainfall with a mix of flowers. Someone whose food has a notably more signature scent such as Pizza will probably not have as much of a literal fragrance and if they do it might be really toned down, given they have a scent at all.

          Then there’s the foods that have seasonal variations such as coffee based products. Flavors such as pumpkin spice and peppermint are some favored holiday / season highlights. Because of this largely recognized ‘ ritual ’ you could say of the general public, Coffee’s own scent would also change in accordance with this. It’s a rather funny way to keep track of the season and even though he doesn’t enjoy it, the cafe always smells rather nice and Tiramisu loves to tease him about it. However it also means that the customers may believe they’ve begun selling these drinks as well because of it.

     It’s not so much the food souls who get to control their scent as it is the general public. They could try using colognes and perfumes but it wouldn’t do too much as it eventually wears off or gets overshadowed by their natural scent. For comparison, in TWEWY, the clothing that your characters wore in battles affected what brands were popular in that area. So in the public, if they have traditions regarding the flavors of foods and it’s widespread enough, it will affect the scent of the corresponding food soul. And just because a dish may have one of these affected foods as an ingredient, such as Tiramisu being a coffee based desert, that doesn’t mean she will be affected as she’s not a seasonally changing food herself.

Mimi didn’t pay much mind to the girl at first. Checking his phone thoroughly as it did have all the information for his work. ‘ I mean, i don’t care. I was just in a bad mood. ’ If anything he would’ve just picked it up and wouldn’t have confronted the guy. Once he was confident that his phone wasn’t too fucked up. He pocketed the phone, putting focus on the girl. ‘ I hope I didn’t scare yeh with that though. ’

     Hearing there was nothing to worry about made the concern leave all at once. It was sometimes hard to predict how one might come out of confrontation. Angry, sad, vengeful. It was clear the girl was relieved as she shook her head. “ It takes a little more than that to scare me. Though I can’t say anything in particular comes to mind. ” It’d have been more accurate to say she hadn’t been scared enough to know what does. “ Your phone isn’t cracked, is it ? That didn’t look like too soft of an impact. ”

      “Do you ever get tired of maintaining that?” 

   By that, they both knew the never withering smile on the other’s features. A rude question perhaps but frankly, she did not care– never did when it came to voicing her thoughts. And surely, Tiramisu was a bit too mellow to get offended by such an innocent question like that, so with ease she settled herself gracefully in the chair and placed her elbows on the table. A grin was dancing on her thin lips as usual as her rather observant eyes fell on her friend. The question that was about to fall from her mouth was pretty obvious, should be pretty obvious for someone who knew her true personality, no?  

           “——— Where is the wine, pretty?”// @tiermade  :: sc.

    It wasn’t the first she’d been asked such a question. Initially the woman hadn’t a clue what others meant in reference. Curious eyes and furrowed brows had been the answer many a time before the inquirer delved into explanation. Now that she was accustomed to the occasional prodding, Tiramisu simply continued to smile through it, never quite offering up a clear response. “ What’s there to maintain ? I’m just happy is all. ” She’d sooner act with avoidance than admit any such thing. Not when it was for others to find solace in.

         Laughter spilled from her lips before it could be helped. A short shake of the head was all she gave whilst wiping down a glass. “ I’m afraid we don’t sell wine to drink, Toso. It might be used in a few dishes, but on the cafe floor ? ”

    Well, since when was wine ever on the menu of a cafe ?

Doesn’t always come across nicely? Well, he did remind her of Van Helsing in some ways. Perhaps, no one could out-intimidate her more than the ex-soldier on their first meeting. Coffee was basically a gentleman from the very first moment. Perhaps, she should thank Abraham for his cold and intimidating nature because now everyone seemed just plain nice… well, not Boston Lobster. But he was still good!  “Oh, goodness, really? I’d love to look at all the ideas! And, yes, the cafe would look absolutely adorable with people dressing up.” Cardia thought about Jello signing up for that before, but she didn’t know about others like Sake or Omurice or anyone else.  “However, I wouldn’t want anyone to be forced to do that. But… I would love to dress up, to be honest. It’s… It’s my first Halloween without my friends. I’m a bit nervous, hahaha.”

     She seemed to brighten all the more just hearing that her attendant agreed. But indeed what should she be ? What about Coffee ? He probably wouldn’t want to dress up, but maybe she could haggle him into something. “ Ah, dear... I actually hadn’t come up with many ideas. Guess I was getting a little ahead of myself. I’m used to giving out treats and not much else. Oh, but of course no one would be forced ! Though I’m sure Macaron would be elated. ” The brief pause caught her attention and she wound up turning the words over and over in her mind. Phrases of comfort always came easy, but Tiramisu took care to approach each time as its own.

          Finally settling on a course of action, the Food Soul carefully reached for Cardia’s gloved hands. They were held in a reassuring grip but still offered means of easily pulling back. “ There’s no way we could take their place and we won’t ever try to, but if you consider us as friends, then you’d still be spending it with some friends... Right ? ”

     “ Oh, it’s nothing bad really. Coffee just has a type of personality that doesn’t always come across nicely to others. ” It wasn’t to say that she apologized in his place often— although she has. It was more that she’d deescalated many a situation before they could take turn. “ I really am glad to hear it was just happy tears ! But ah, I did think about suggesting costumes to Coffee ! If you were considering it too, then I’m sure he’d agree. Wouldn’t the cafe look so cute with everyone dressed up ? ”

     It’s a rare sight for her to be displeased with anything, but this day the normally friendly looking woman is sending a glare towards her brother. The poor egg does nothing but sit there and if it were indeed to hatch into Spectra, he’s on his own.

HC 02. Food Soul Names

     So I’ve had this idea on the back burner for a long time and since I’m... probably gonna be setting up another food blog soon, I decided to revisit it and flesh it out some. The idea is that some of the Food Souls may have a “ human name ”. This is by no means a name that they were born with or chose for themselves, as they are aware of the food by which they personify. They always go by that name and will always introduce themselves as such. However, some Master Attendants may have bestowed real names to the Food Souls they summoned. They could have done so for a variety of reasons.

          Maybe they wanted to have a means of distinguishing food from the soul themselves, maybe they didn’t like speaking about food as a living thing, or perhaps they wanted to treat the Food Soul as an equal. Heck, maybe some are even given one as a sort of honor, as some do hail from kingdoms. Tiramisu falls under the second to last category. Her first attendant lived a long time and treated her kindly. She was spoiled and shown much love from him and all the people around. However she didn’t come out to be a rotten child that took everything for granted. Her attendant cherished her and because of his love for her, treating her like a daughter, he gifted her the name Teofila. ( This is the same name I use for verses outside FF ). 

     Although always thankful for the name, she doesn’t go around having everyone call her this. It was only that single Master Attendant. Like I said, the Food Souls still go by their namesake dish because that is their actual name. If asked by an attendant whether or not they have another, they might share the notion of a former attendant giving them a name. And if that attendant wants to call them by that name instead of the food, they can. Or they can disregard that name and call them yet again something else entirely. Tiramisu herself doesn’t mind sharing with others the name Teofila as she regards it as a precious gift from her first Master Attendant. The topic is just likely something the Food Souls seldom bring up on their own.

‘ Sheesh… ’ Mimi doesn’t know why the guy had to be so fucking rude about it. All he said was that he had to pick up his fucking trash then he went off in a rant about it’s his right to do whatever before throwing his phone on the side. Of course, he slapped the fuck out of the guy before going to pick up his phone. ‘ Oh thank god. It’s not broken people. ’

     “ Um... Pardon me for asking, but is everything all right ? ” Usual smile at her face, there was clear concern in the student’s eyes. She never liked being witness to fights and the like as there wasn’t much of anything that could be done. Sadly, not many would listen to the words of a woman— and a pacifist at that. But she still tried standing up for others and would be there in the aftermath.

          “ That was a little uncalled for, huh ? ”

“ Careful, you might not like the offer you’re making… ” a tease falls so easily from his lips as he reaches forward, twirling a strand of her hair around his finger. He wasn’t a bad cook, per se, but he does try to invent something out of nothing. While he knows various recipes, it doesn’t hurt to try and make something new. He was in a mood of vigorous re-invention, a new combination to tantalize those craving a sinful taste. His informality with her is a given, there was no need for him to remain so unbearably RIGID with her. It would be so lonely, otherwise, to keep even her at a comfortable distance. After all, one risks the chance of shedding tears, if he allows himself to be tamed by others…

IF YOU TAME ME, THEN WE SHALL NEED EACH OTHER. To him, she was unique in all the world. To her – he supposed it was the same. After all, it was rare that food spirits even had siblings to speak of. So in his eyes, she was a treasure; to him, she was one of the brightest stars. His vesper, a loving acolyte to what it meant to be kind. She was Venusian, expected of someone so lovely. 

“ Though, it goes without saying. I’ve been trying to make new dishes, but a lot of my results end up wasting ingredients. I’m sure if I had you helping me out, we’d be able to make more dishes successfully. You were always better at it than I was. ”

EVEN MORE OFF-HANDED PRAISE. He couldn’t help it, her reactions were always his favorite. It wasn’t as though he was a bully, goodness no. He just liked seeing her expression after his praise; she doesn’t get enough of it, so he’s the one making sure she knows just how appreciated she is. After all, she’s taking care of him - even if he doesn’t mind working himself to the bone. If he had the chance, he would provide any relief he could, even if it was just something as simple as sitting down with her. The truth was that he was blessed to have her in his life, so he puts in all his effort for her.

     A scoff and a smile more akin to a grin now took place almost immediately. She didn’t say anything when he reached for her hair, rather she welcomed it. A habit the woman had grown well accustomed to and one that was just as soothing. Having hair as long as she did often called for many others, people and animals alike, to play with it. Tiramisu couldn’t begin to list the number of times a baby or child, or even a cat or bird, would tug at the long flowing locks. Just as she couldn’t name the many occasions she ran late on a return to the cafe only to show up with flowers woven into the new braids done by joyous children in the plaza.

          Coffee especially was someone who liked to twirl her strands and mess with them in an almost absentminded fashion. Never did she voice it but once or twice, but the food soul thought it to be an awfully cute mannerism. “ I think I’ve at least developed a capability for stomaching your ‘ creations ’. ” A light chuckle as she took another bite of her macaron. “ You really are better at crafting drinks than anything else. If you really need my help so badly, I suppose I could join for some advice. But if I do all the work, you’ll never learn ! ”

     Spoken with the sweetest of smiles even as she held a confection towards him— more as a demand to eat something rather than a suggestion. Though in the next moment her cheeks puffed out comically with a small pout.

          “ What did I just say about flattery ? Really... ” It was like talking to a wall sometimes. He was so stubborn in making sure she was appreciated. A sentiment dearly loved, no doubt. But it was still almost embarrassing being received from anyone. Her actions were, in her mind, only ever what any other kindhearted person would or should be doing. It was... strange to be praised for samaritan behaviors. Although it also stood true that she simply wasn’t often the best at handling compliments. Just how would he feel to be in her place ?

          “ Maybe after closing or early tomorrow morning. I could stick around to see just what it is you’re trying to make. Is it a dessert ? A main dish ? Or maybe even a sauce ? ”

Day 5: Favorite Fallen Angel

    Inugami is so beautiful and her color palette was just so pretty to work with. Her sketch was so hellish though, you have no idea, but I’m really happy with the turn-out. Idk if I’ll draw her again though just because of everything she has going on.

If Steak was mostly known for his talents with a sword, then his obvious lack of a way with words would surely be a close second. After only one comment the Food Soul standing before him – or crouching, now that she’d hurriedly started to check over the ingredients she’d been carrying – looked just as crushed as the box’s contents potentially could be. 

Shoulders drooping as he exhaled with a quiet sigh, Steak soon joined her in re-packing the ingredients that had fallen; crouching and picking up a fallen apple which he dusted off against his coat before tossing it back into the box. 

          “Just watch where you walk next time?” 

He wouldn’t want to see her trip and get hurt – even if he was partially to blame here for not noticing Tiramisu’s arrival in the first place. 

          “… As it goes, there aren’t any more tasks for me to carry out anyway, and Master Attendant isn’t around. If you need any help after this, I wouldn’t mind joining you. If you don’t mind.”

     Once more the food soul had paused in her actions, but this time it was to watch in mild surprise as Steak joined in helping. It wasn’t that she thought him particularly mean— seldom basing one’s character on appearance— but defeated as Tiramisu had just been, she was prepared to do the job alone. She blinked once, twice at his offer, before breaking from a stare and quickly returned to the task.

          “ O-Oh, well, I wouldn’t mind at all— but I couldn’t possibly ! I’m sure you’d much rather enjoy your free time than help me in even more work. Um... B-Besides, I don’t usually do this much heavy-lifting... ”

     Despite a meek decline, she was extremely grateful for the thought. As proof there was already a small smile making its return. Perhaps his words really weren’t meant to be so harsh. The man was clearly nicer than what most might assume and this was her reminder. A faint, embarrassed blush dusted her cheeks as she tucked away a hand of bananas.

          “ But I’ll... be sure to be more careful whenever I do. ”
