“okay, seems class is in session. let’s begin teach!” you flash a shy grin, holding yourself from showing all 32 teeth.
“haha,” his eyes form upside down smiles amidst a giggle. “so, wanna pick up from where we last left off?” he thinks for a second “right, you were working on this verse” he mumbles.
you nod “whatever you say teach!” and continue wearing the same grin. you recognize the same drowsiness in your mind and the same knocking against your heart from last lesson. now's not the time to get distracted, is it!
you know stella would poetically describe this feeling as: a gushing, pushing, and pulling of masses of water unsatisfied when it finally reaches a dam. and you could almost imagine yourself denying that you, y/n, would ever acquire such feelings, until you look up to meet eyes with edwards.
well, you’re mistaken.
“ready?” martin asks.
“ready.”
you take a seat on the ground merely three inches away from his hip. merely two as he scooches closer.
now, an inch away as he begins to pick your hand off the floor and lets your fingers strum against the strings. “okay good!”
you let your hand rest off to the side again, but he is swift to bring it back to the strings. “in this next verse, the strumming pattern changes slightly like this.” martin’s voice clings to air like a low hum as he holds onto your hands. you notice how soft they feel. for a minute or so his hand continues to hover above yours while you familiarize yourself with the pattern, strumming and strumming.
focus y/n! no half-assed learning!
he catches the look on your face when he lifts his head up. your concentrated lips. your stilled, furrowed eyebrows that are itching him to soften with a light touch of the forehead. but hey! teaching is your job edwards! he lets the voice tickle his ear.
yet, for another two hours, he fails to listen at his own discretion. he would’ve exploded if you had caught him taking advantage of those brief but worth-it glances while you were glued to the guitar.
comes the end of the session, which you’re not ready to say bye, but you thank him anyway– almost with a slight bow.
“you know i’ve kept tally on how much thank you’s and thanks’ i’ve heard from you today?” martin says.
“what?”
“joking. but of course, i’m thankful too. what else would i be spending my time on?”
“well… i’m glad that’s the case.”
“anyway, i’ve got to get headed home, I have some plans with family.”
“got it teach!”
and he flashes an i’ll be going smile before the shut of the door.
huff.
you fill a cold glass of water from the fridge and put a hand against your cheek. warm and flushed. goodness.
you plop onto the sofa and sink into your own weight. a few minutes staring into the distance when you realize that now, it’s the nothingness between you and your wall.
a notification buzzes from your phone beside you.
> hey i think you left something
< i left something in my own house?
> something like that
> ima be back in a few
confused, but you’re sure your favorite sight is him coming through the door. so not that it matters at all.
the front door is still unlocked and when you see edwards it’s no surprise his face is painted with a grin that could be described as a combination of urgency and giddiness.
“so?” martin says.
“so, so?”
“i think you forgot this, ma’am?” he puckers up and points to his lips like a child. a very foolish one.
“excuse me?” dumfounded.
“sorry, was that too childish of me?” he felt the back of his neck get sweaty. “i’ll leave now–” you catch the color of his cheeks before he turns around. a deeper flush of red. maybe you two are equals now that his face is burning like yours, if not greater, during the entire session.
“no,” you let out a breath and chuckle at once. “c’mere,” you scoot to give him space on the already spacious sofa.
you face each other, and you lift your hand, beating him to it.
flick. you flick his forehead.
“ow! y/n why did you do that?”
“stop complaining like an ass, and give me a kiss.”
“and you could’ve just said that but, yes! no complaints ma’am!”

“Hey— don’t think you get a say in this,” Sakuya spoke before Yushi could even open his mouth— heck, form a thought in his brain. He latched an arm onto Yushi's shoulder like it belonged there. Yushi slumped at the sudden proximity and sent him a glare, only softening when Sakuya pulled him into a lazy hug. “Let's get something to eat. I’m afraid this is a one-man job.”
“A one-man job? Weren’t you the one who insisted everyone follow me here?” Sion dragged a hand through his hair, pursing his lips at the wide collection of eye frames. He didn’t need to narrow down a price because everything screamed the money he could only pray upon a miracle to afford.
Sakuya rolled his eyes to the back of his head, mocking Sion’s distaste in a sing-song.
“You know… how ‘bout going with your gut. Who’s telling you not to?” Riku chimed into the conversation, only to add unwanted adversity to the situation. Yeah, Sion’s gut was the least thing he wanted to trust right now. Even with shut eyes, everyone could see and feel the collective deadpan.
“The emotionally unavailable person who is currently looking at me and thinks they have good advice,” Sion didn’t expect the words to come off that way, but hey— force some sense into a fool and maybe that’s how you reboot them.
Riku was completely stilled, blinking like a lost cat, then chuckled as if it was nothing.
The air smelled faintly of jasmine, involuntarily mixed with alcohol wipes that swam through the fan’s breeze. The store’s comfort was swallowed by Sion’s sigh as he pulled himself to the other shelf across from the boys. Even the fuzzy sound of air couldn’t mask the silence that crept in, save the inevitable laughter Sakuya shamelessly failed to hold in.
Sakuya, now trailing behind Sion, picked up a random pair of frames and held it before his eyes. “Look at this one! You think it’s cute, huh? I think so too.” They were black squared glasses adorned with a subtle edge, rounded rims, and a glossy finish. For some it could speak modesty. For others, practicality or maybe too much simplicity. Its price was the only thing that spoke of everything but beauty.
To be fair, it gave Sion some leverage of hope when Sakuya directed him to the ON SALE sign by the mirror it was first found in. Don’t get him wrong, they were cheaper than others, yet borderline expensive. Either way, he’d have to work a little harder if he wanted this store to be out of his league— not the other way around.
Sakuya pointed at his head. “Just think about it! “You really think she would be worked up over one gift?”
Just forget everything, even his worries dispersed at a single mention of you. Flushed, he helplessly took the glasses. If he was confident in giving you these pairs, he could cross off one of his problems. But there was another thing to consider.
Prescription. Like, when was the last time you got an eye checkup? But the fact itself wouldn’t be such a great help anyway.
The thing is, you never talked about your vision. Not that it didn’t matter, but simply because there was no need.
Sion remembered you wore glasses just yesterday. Except you two were walking beneath the heat of the sun. It’s too hot, you complained and it seemed that the pads of your glasses had no plans on sticking to the bridge of your nose as your foundation melted. Removing them would be at the expense of only two things.
Appearance, or eye-sight. Regardless, you took them out, placed them neatly into their case and simply smiled at him. You’re confusing me, Sion had really wanted to say out of the blue. But he knew one word would’ve been enough to blow the surprise away.
Sion rethought again. Maybe, you really didn’t have any vision problems and only cared about your makeup getting ruined. Maybe, you only wore contacts that day and accessorized with fake lenses to match one of your brown, buckled suede purses. Maybe, you’ll start to dislike wearing glasses more after that time.
“Sion, there are plenty of other stores, it doesn’t have to be this one,” Ryo added shyly. His dad was an optometrist at another vision center. “If you’re worried about grading them, we can finish it in a couple days— friend priority, y’know.” He winked, placing a hand on Sion’s shoulder.
“Right… but does she even wear prescription glasses? Even so, I can’t just guess it!” Sion scratched the back of his nape and placed the frames back in its original place. He felt like a lost cause, being sent back to square one not long after feeling the slightest buzz of positivity.
“I mean, didn’t you think at least twice about this?” Jaehee remarked after a while of not talking. Sion coughed, adjusting the fabric inside his pockets awkwardly.
“See, look at him. He’s clueless.” Sakuya quickly dodged Sion’s threatening hand, which signaled it was ready to let go of its last nerve and smack him. Nearly stumbling, Sakuya caught onto Ryo’s jacket and covered himself. He peeked only to find Sion wasn’t playing around anymore. He sighed, slumping away until his arms opened and resumed hugging Yushi.
Everyone prepared themselves for another 30 minutes of Sion beating around the bush.
“Do her eyes look bigger or smaller when she wears them?” Ryo waved his egg sandwich toward Sion, who refused it for the hundredth time. It had been Ryo’s favorite before it was Sion’s, but either way, Ryo was always up for sharing— knowing he always craved food that wasn't his. Anyway, Sion could sneak a few bites during class if he felt like it.
“I don’t know— I mean do they change significantly? All I pretty much remember is that she looked really—” Sion swallowed down his fluttery grin with water. “Well saying that won’t answer your question.”
Sakuya pointed at Sion like a child, his foot tapping rapidly against the ground. “Oh, he’s already down bad enough! How much more does it take to notice these small changes?” Groaning, Sakuya threw himself onto the school rooftop’s abandoned sofa beside Ryo. “Give up. There’s no expert to solve your problems. Actually— you should be her expert, but you aren’t!”
“I think the last thing you should be doing is judging his incompetence,” Jaehee attempted beneath his breath, unseriously. “And bad memory.” He sipped again on a box of apple juice, shrugging when everyone sent him a face.
“Pretty sure everyone, even the birds outside, heard you.” Yushi teased.
The foghorn in question smirked. He put his juice on the table, secluding it from the discarded gum, and cleared his throat. “Okay, only seriousness, right guys?” Everyone, save Sion himself, nodded in unison.
A couple seconds of silence dragged along until Sakuya’s eyes widened, looking like they were fighting something to say. “Well, I remember she wore glasses back in elementary school!” He let out pretty confidently.
“Not very helpful.” Ryo deadpanned.
“No, but certain ones with hot pink bands to hold them in place! Who’d ever think those looked cool?” Sakuya scrunched his nose at the memory.
“Hey, you would’ve thought the same at that age too,” Riku chuckled.
“And your point, Saku?” Ryo asked.
“She was probably going to lose them! And whose parents want to pay more money for lost prescription glasses?” Sakuya emphasized.
Ryo nodded. “Okay, so at some rate we know—”
“But I’ve seen her apply contacts before Mr. Jung started lecturing!” Riku added proudly. “She sits right beside me and I remember from my peripheral!”
Ryo blinked slowly, adjusting his weight on the dusty sofa. “Does she wear them often in class?”
“Oh, don’t think I’m paying attention to someone other than the board.” Riku swayed his hand to his face.
Surely, this conversation was pushed and pulled in every direction by fools on a not-so-funny joke streak. Welp, what more did Sion expect?
“Hey, think about it like this. You buy the frames for y'know, the special day, then get her prescription later on!” Ryo suggested, looking at Sion with bright eyes in hopes it would solve the entirety of his problems.
Even just by looking at him in complete silence, Ryo could hear the refusal and unwillingness to surrender to this makeshift plan. Reality was that he would need to get himself somewhere, and a whole lot of what if’s or but’s was only going to send him back home, unsatisfied.
“Cheer up, the sun’s so bright out!” Ryo sat up and dusted his pants lightly. He threw the plastic wrap of his sandwich in the trash and turned to smile at Sion one more time. His hands finding their way to his pockets, he slowly departed from the rest who were getting ready to follow along. Lunch was nearly over, and Sion didn’t want it to be. At the same time, he could and couldn’t sit by these fools.
But hey, Ryo is never wrong— today the clouds and the sun were both present, carrying an equilibrium of peace. But the moment was only spiked with disappointment and a half-hearted appetite. Sion, still holding his half-eaten sandwich, waited for everyone to be out of sight. Now, he was hurrying to class, hoping you weren’t there to catch him like a fool.
But there you were, waiting for Sion in the corner of the stairway. You took his hand in yours, your eyes crinkling under the sun as you smiled ear to ear.
This time, you were wearing your staple— mahogany frames.
Ryo was busy tuning his violin in the corner of the gym, Jaehee was “reading” a book— except his phone was placed inside, and Riku and Sakuya had cleaning duty. On the other hand, Sion had been itching to talk to Ryo all day about his worries.
But most importantly, he wasn’t about to risk slipping on the soapy and slippery floor as those two delinquents charged forward with a mop. Too lazy to drag himself around the perimeters, he stuffed his wire headphones in his ears. He leaned against the wall, and gradually slid down until he met the ground with a light thud.
He pulled the hood of his jacket over his head, while his other hand absently brushed against the shape of his eyebrows.
Psst. Yushi poked his cheek. “Today, she’s wearing the same glasses from yesterday.”
Sion looked up at him and subtly nodded in response. Yushi knew he knew— he just wanted to point it out. Sion took off the earbud from his left ear where Yushi sat beside him.
“I think I have a solution for you,” Yushi mumbled, unsure if really wanted to say it.
“Like what?” Sion was directly facing him now, waiting for the answer he had anticipated the entire day.
“Buy the frames you like for her, find a way to get her glasses, then bring them to Ryo. Everything other than that just requires you giving it to her.” Yushi scrunched his nose at how bland and straightforward his words came off.
“That easy?” Sion paused. “You’re not just messing around like the others?”
Yushi kept the small habitual grin on his face. “I didn’t have to think hard about it— if that’s what you were wondering.” He paused, blinking five times, realizing that didn’t answer his question. “The second step is just something you have to figure out on your own.” Sorry or welp, Yushi wanted to say. But again, he realized it wasn’t a big enough problem— nor his problem at all to even care.
“You look like you don’t want to be accountable for anything that goes wrong.” Sion pressed his lips in a line.
“Exactly.” Yushi stood up and stretched his arms. He sat down again and took out a bag of chocolate mushrooms from the small pocket of his backpack. He popped one in his mouth and offered a couple to Sion.
By the time Sion glanced back at Ryo, his violin was finally packed into its case and not resting beneath his chin. Finally, Sakuya and Riku had shuffled into the storage room to put back the brooms and mops, and Jaehee, rising absentmindedly, realized he successfully killed time. He approached Sion and Yushi, humming a familiar tune.
“Jaehee!” Yushi complained, but Sion could hear the evident grin in his voice. “You keep getting that song stuck to my head!”
Jaehee giggled, singing the lyrics like it mattered. As if being forced, Yushi joined in half-unwillingly.
Friday was melting under the sun quickly. So was Sakuya’s ice cream, which he bought across campus. Sion sadly watched it fight an unwanted battle. He didn’t want to melt the same way in front of you.
Summer was also approaching by the minute and Sion wasn’t ready for calendar dates flying by, marking days he'd absolutely done nothing but think of you. Oh, and to drag tasks into the same dreadful pile of days where he told himself, I’ll do it later. So much for the art of procrastination.
And even when it came to you, his mind consisted solely of emptiness. Especially now. He had no clue how to approach the plan, and that wasn’t much of a justifiable excuse. How or when could he just snatch your glasses without you clearly suspecting him?
Maybe he could just take it from your bag, while you’re in the restroom. Or take it when you place them on your desk unknowingly. Or just take them and run and try not to trip with guilt weighing him down. Guilt tripping, he thought. But it didn’t sound so funny the second time.
Sion was supposed to be cafe hopping with Ryo, studying for a final in less than a week. But when the first café smelled more of burnt coffee, he dragged Ryo across the block and found themselves back in front of the same optical store.
“You’re just unpredictable,” Ryo chuckled, tidying his hair from the hot wind.
You groan at the unexpected notification in the midst of your study session. “Like always,” You spoke beneath your breath. Already, your head was groggy and more than ready for the power nap you planned later.
But a last-minute hangout at your place was supposed to cure Sion’s alleged boredom. It didn’t even require sending him a text back for him to show up. To him, yes or no always meant yes or yes.
The last time you checked, this obligation wasn’t listed in the Oh Sion contract.
But there he was, shuffling through your room like it always belonged to him. Sion sat on the edge of your bed, staring at you as if you had an answer to a non-existent question.
Your lips tugged on both sides. “What?” Now you were asking the question. Was he gonna order food? Pull out a random board game from a dusty shelf and pretend to play seriously? Or do what he always did— pick at your jewelry hanging on a stand and ignore the tarnishes like everything seemed timeless?
“Hmm, I’m not sure what.” There was something smug about his face.
“You’re funny.” You paused. “Well, you came uninvited.” You let the words fall out, hinting your restlessness.
“Univinted? I thought I was always welcome here.” He shifted a little closer to you.
“There you go again.” You say between a giggle, ruffling his hair, allowing his joking words to pass. “I need to do the laundry, I’ll be quick.” You attempted to stand up but a subtle poke sent to your shoulder was enough to keep you grounded. “Hmm?” You hummed.
Sion blanked. He wasn’t sure how to execute the plan properly. In the background of his mind, spoke a voice telling him to keep his composure. He needed to stall some way, somehow.
Suddenly, his arms wrap around yours like a gentle anchor. His hand, resting on your head, keeping you tucked into the crook of his neck. “You’re so warm.” He mumbles playfully, letting every single inch of space between the two of you disappear.
His eyes gleam, spelling the word distraction. But of course, you let it slip past reason because that’s what you always did around him. This wasn’t about the laundry, you realized. You leaned against him further, finding a comfortable spot for slumber.
Not until a car honked from a distance. You stiffen, pulling back slightly with a stifled laugh. As you feel the weight from his hand shift on top of your head, you lift up to look at him.
Your faces hover just centimeters apart. Shocked, you try to move away but—
“Ow.” He flinched, rubbing at a certain part on his head. His eyes drift to yours— no—your glasses. You realize the hinge had accidentally caught a couple strands of his hair.
“Here, let me.” You raise your hand, slightly grazing his face, to untangle the strands. Before you can say sorry, you catch him off-guard with a rosy flush on his ears, spreading like wildfire. When you meet eyes again, they still light up the same way you’ve memorized.
“Didn’t realize these could be so troublesome.” You huffed a laugh. Just for fun, your hands find his hair again, naturally tousling it into something incomprehensible, something endearing.
Taking off your glasses, you place them in the corner of your bed stand, not wanting any more interruptions. Now, they sat alone, only accompanied with a lampshade and old stickers on the wooden surface that were too stubborn to come off.
Sion internally celebrated. His task was nearly complete. He just needed to take the glasses discreetly— but not before hugging you a little longer, and a little tighter than the previous time. Just as long as he would be able to get them to Ryo on time.
You settle your head on Sion’s lap. As if answering an unspoken cue, he returns your gestures. Clumsily but trying with enough care, he plays with your hair. Clearly, he only knows how to make a simple braid, but his fingers loop through your hair softly— and now, it's like second nature.
Maybe you could nap like this, and let your stubbornness sink in until rest turned into regret. But it's hard to close your eyes without expecting something from him. Closing them for a few seconds, then opening again, he remains the same way. You watch as his concentrated lips form into a distinguishable pout as he continues braiding. But the fifth time your eyes flutter open, his face is a little closer to yours.
Startled, you nearly pushed him away, reminding yourself this wasn’t some cold war between restraint and— well— an obviously pretty face that couldn’t be ignored. His laugh slipped out shyly, wanting to put his head down and shy away, wanting to know what was going through your head that made the air seem so tight.
“Come closer.”
“Why?”
But you realized your question had only done you self-destruction. You're not completely sure if it wanted to regret or give in.
“Just because.”
But your body moves faster than processing thoughts— unable to ask why for the second time.
Like that, you let go of everything in place in exchange for a breath relief. Like that, time dragged heavier than either of you could hold, and therefore, you liked it even better.
You swore never to give up any moment in life for the cost of anything.
Except one. Actually, this one.
You woke up knowing your exam was also on the same day as your birthday. You didn’t expect much the moment you woke up— that was what you were telling yourself. But you cared a lot, and being met with a handful of birthday messages made the air in the atmosphere seem more enjoyable to breathe.
You knew it was going to be a good day.
It goes without saying Sion was among those in that pile of messages. Except his message was long enough to pass as a future thesis. You slip your phone in your pocket, saving it for your fully conscious mind to consume.
Even arriving earlier to campus, he had already beat you to it. He’s there, sitting in your seat. And that drink— the one you buy almost every day— was also in the corner of the desk. When you try to sneak up on him, you notice a small gift resting on his lap.
He looks like he’s studying extra hard to get on your level. No, he’s compiling quick notes on a sheet of paper titled: Things to remember on the exam. His handwriting, neater than you’ve ever seen it.
Heck, if it was an open note exam you would’ve been on a joy ride.
You tap his shoulder as if you’re the one surprising him. But you don’t care because your excitement is overflowing from your heart.
He looks up, and immediately gets up from his seat— no, your seat. He nearly drops your gift, but he catches it in time. You stifle a laugh. He wants to give you the gift confidently, but he notices something, almost in a panic.
“Your glasses, where are they?”
You lift your hand to your face where your glasses are in fact, not there. But you didn’t think it would impact you during the exam. No, that was a lie. And contacts? Forgotten. Maybe, you’d been too distracted and it seemed everything was ready to take its toll on you.
Quickly, he read the disappointment on your face. He hadn’t planned to open your gift, but he couldn’t watch you react like that. Not today.
“I, well— don’t worry.” He unraveled the bow on the box, and settled the packaging on the table. He took the pink, velvety glasses case out and opened them. He gently tucked your hair away behind your ears, slipping on the same glasses Sakuya had shown him.
He was lying when he said he didn’t like them. Truthfully, he’d fallen for them the moment he saw them.
Your panic melted into strange, calm laughter and quickly, the world came into focus. I mean, you didn’t expect them to be “real” glasses. Like a glove, they settled on your face without slipping and without tension. For some reason, Sion’s features were sharper than before. Did he pay extra for an enhancement feature, or did the gift just come with a pretty boy?
Jokes aside, you couldn’t choose the proper words to thank him— nothing came close. You still managed to breathe a simple thank you. It seemed that something more than love was overflowing. Like a glass of water flowing at the brim, you were unsure what to do other than engulf him in your arms, exactly like the last time.
“Happy birthday,” He mumbled in your hair, slipping your old glasses into the pockets of your hoodie.
A collection of oneshots intended to be read in the comfort of one’s state of mind, filled with young, fleeting love to forever cherish and chase. Each story is of a different adventure, a different song, inviting room to garner thought and tranquility.
