Making Beautiful Music Together
Farm Animals...we got a baby goat, Elan which we got to feed..a semi successful horse selfie and lastly Charlie Brown.
Last night...
I spent the night at the Red Back Pack lodge which is located in a township, the experience was (to quote Jones) "Powerful". There is a certain idea of "South Africa" that most Americans have of impoverished people, houses made of sheet metal and distinct racial divides. Up until last night, I didn't really experience that Africa. We have spent most of our time on NMMU campus or in the city.
Last night we walked around the town ship, I saw the poverty, the shanties, the segregation but above everything else I saw something more...I saw community, I saw kids laughing and playing in the streets, I saw unity. At home everyone lives in their cookie cutter houses. They park their car in their garage so they can go from work to home without having ever having to step outside. Some time during American "progression" some thing was lost along the way. The unity and comradery Just from walking around was truly touching.
The Red Back Pack lodge was also a powerful experience. We were truly blessed to hear Mama Africa share her moving story with us. She told us about her resistance to the raciest powers which controlled and abused the African people, including herself. Later we were served a devious buffet style meal of traditional township dishes (including ox stomach). After a few hours of hanging out we went to sleep.
The next day we woke up, ate breakfast and went back to a township. We visited a local artist. She shade with us her story and showed us her beautiful art and home. As I sit in this conference room writing this blog, my mind is on Mama Africa and the township. The experience is something that will sick with me for a white and I hope to go back as soon as life will let me.
It’s finally here! The trailer for our final documentary!
Jazzy Jazz
Okay, so I don't know if I touched on this before but the whole reason I'm in SA is to create a short documentary. My group I doing ours on Jazz. So yesterday we were very privileged to meet with some of NMMU's (Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University) most talented Jazz students. Which was cool. Sitting in that class it accord to me how alike we all are. In the end we aren't NKU students or NMMU students we are just students. Later tonight the group and I are going to the Red Location Backpackers which is located in a township. To be honest I'm not quit sure what expect, the only thing I am sure of is we will not have WiFi.
We have around a week left in SA and I know I'm going to have a hard time leaving. I'd like to be able to go to the beach again before we leave but with our strict itinerary I don't know if we will. I also have yet to see a monkey, staring to think the monkeys are a lie.
Where do I start...
Sooo, its been a few days since my last detailed post. WiFi is still an issue so I can only post when I'm taking a coffee brake. So I'm going to do a quick run down of the pat few days...
Went to da straw market, bought some art, haggled some bros.
Went to da beach, drank some wine, lost my glasses.
Went to a town ship, got perspective, life changed.
Drank coffee, got energy, drank more coffee.
Pointed a camera, pressed record, got some footage. Slept, kinda, not really.
More updates to come.
Light house adventure
Day 3
I think the jet lag finnaly settled in. After a few busy days of lectures tours and a bit of partying it hit me. Slept most of the day but I'm okay with it, the night is young.
Good news
After an actual night of sleep (first in days) I'm out of zombi mode, bring it on SA!
Made it!
Okay, This post comes late and hastily written, After about 26 hours of travel we arrived in Port Elizabeth. Eager, to sleep (which didn't really happen) I wanted to knock out the essentials, shower, charge phone and connect to wifi, none of which went over smoothly.
Showering was an experience to say the least. The hot water heater is located directly over the tub, so do shower I had to crouch under it in a crab like position (super awkward to do naked fyi) the "shower head" set up by plastic tubes which connected to two separate faucets, one for hot, one for cold. this rig kept falling apart spraying water from both sides....one scolding, one freezing.
After my shower I learned that my wifi could not be set up (yet) and that the outlet converter I bought does not work, so my phone has been dead all day, tragic I know.... I will be going to buy a new one today. That being said I'm having a grate time!
Sleepy Ian is sleepy
17 hour flight...bring it on!
My pre-trip video, think it speaks for itself.
