3 lessons I’ve learned about learning:
Metaphor is a powerful tool to aid understanding. In an interview with Scott Young, he related how he had a much easier time grasping the concept of electricity and voltage when he pictured water flowing around a circuit in channels, with the higher voltage ‘water’ at a higher level than the lower voltage ‘water.’ A metaphor gives the mind something concrete to hold onto when dealing with abstract concepts.
Another insight from Scott Young was what he called ‘the grind’ — putting yourself in the position where you might make a mistake, and forcing yourself to find the right choice. This, he says, is where he learns most quickly.
Finally, an insight from publisher Daphne Grey-Grant, has to do with creativity. We have ‘two brains,’ she says, a ‘creating brain’ and an ‘editing brain,' and only one can be in the driver’s seat at a time. She warns against engaging the ‘editing brain’ too early, before the ‘creating brain’ has had a chance to get some momentum. A useful tip she shared was to cover your computer monitor with a piece of paper or a blanket, until you feel you’ve got out what you wanted to say.
And now, O Father, mindful of the love that bought us, once for all, on Calvary's tree, and having with us him that pleads above, we here present, we here spread forth to thee that only offering perfect in thine eyes, the one true, pure, immortal sacrifice. Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim: for lo! between our sins and their reward we set the passion of thy Son our Lord.
Hymn: And Now, O Father, Mindful of the Love
Lyrics: William Bright
Bread of the world, in mercy broken, wine of the soul in mercy shed, by whom the words of life were spoken, and in whose death our sins are dead: look on the heart by sorrow broken, look on the tears by sinners shed; and be thy feast to us the token that by thy grace our souls are fed.
Hymn: Bread of the World
Lyrics: Reginald Heber
O let me feel thee near me: the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but, Jesus, draw thou nearer and shield my soul from sin. (John Ernest Bode)
Hymn: O Jesus, I Have Promised
Lyrics: John Ernest Bode
Just as I am, without one plea, but that thy blood was shed for me, and that thou bidst me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come. Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind; sight, riches, healing of the mind, yea, all I need in thee to find, O Lamb of God, I come. Just as I am, though tossed about with many a conflict, many a doubt, fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come. Just as I am, and waiting not to rid my soul of one dark blot, to thee whose blood can cleanse each spot, O Lamb of God, I come. Just as I am, thy love unknown hath broken every barrier down; now, to be thine, yea thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come.
Hymn: Just as I Am
Lyrics: Charlotte Elliot
I feel the winds of God today; today my sail I lift, though heavy oft with drenching spray and torn with many a rift; if hope but light the water's crest, and Christ my bark will use, I'll seek the seas at his behest, and brave another cruise. It is the wind of God that dries my vain regretful tears, until with braver thoughts shall rise the purer, brighter years; if cast on shores of selfish ease or pleasure I should be, Lord, let me feel thy freshening breeze, and I'll put back to sea. If ever I forget thy love and how that love was shown, lift high the blood-red flag above; it bears thy name alone. Great pilot of my onward way, thou wilt not let me drift. I feel the winds of God today; today my sail I lift.
Hymn: I Feel the Winds of God
Lyrics: Jessie Adams
Knowledge without application is deception. Depth is not revealed in our knowledge alone, but rather our response to that knowledge.

Beauty was created by God for a purpose: to give us the experience of wonder. And wonder, in turn, is intended to lead us to the ultimate human expression and privilege: worship. Beauty is both a gift and a map. It is a gift to be enjoyed and a map to be followed back to the source of the beauty with praise and thanksgiving.
Steve DeWitt — Eyes Wide Open
Lead, kindly light, amid the encircling gloom; lead thou me on. The night is dark, and I am far from home; lead thou me on. Keep thou my feet; I do not ask to see the distant scene — one step enough for me. I was not ever thus, nor prayed that thou shouldst lead me on. I loved to choose and see my path; but now lead thou me on. I loved the garish day, and spite of fears pride ruled my will: remember not past years. So long thy power hath blest me, sure it still will lead me on, o'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent, till the night is gone; and with the morn those angel faces smile, which I have love long since, and lost awhile.
Hymn: Lead, a Kindly Light
Lyrics: John Henry Newman
Jesus, thy boundless love to me no thought can reach, no tongue declare, O knit my thankful heart to thee, and reign without a rival there; thine wholly, thine alone I am; be thou alone my constant flame.
Hymn: Jesus, Thy Boundless Love to Me
Lyrics: Paul Gerhardt, John Wesley.
A verse I didn't know was a part of Be Thou My Vision!
Lyrics by Mary Elizabeth Byrne and Eleanor H. Hull.
Strength of God, thy might within conquers sorrow, pain and sin: fortify from evil's art all the gateways of my heart. Truth of God, thy piercing rays penetrate my secret ways. May the light that shames my sin guide me holier paths to win.
From the hymn Fire of God; lyrics by Albert Frederick Bayly.
Make me a captive, Lord, and then I shall be free, force me to render up my sword, and I shall conqueror be. I sink in life's alarms when by myself I stand; imprison me within thine arms, and strong shall be my stand.
Hymn: Make Me a Captive, Lord
Lyrics: George Matheson
Sun of righteousness, shine forth; dawn upon this age of earth; in thy church let light appear, till the world shall see it clear. Have mercy, Lord. Wake dead Christendom from sleep, lapped in comfort, drowsing deep; tell thy name and acts abroad; show this land thou art our God. Have mercy, Lord. See our sad divisions, Lord; heal by they unbroken word; gather, shepherd of mankind, all the lost, the hurt, the blind. Have mercy, Lord. Help us to behold afar in this age thy glory's star, that, in what small strength we own, knightly virtue may be shown. Have mercy, Lord.
Hymn: Sun of Righteousness
Lyrics: Christian David, Christian Gottlob Barth, Johann Christian Nehring, J Macpherson.
Hymn: Jesus, Shepherd of Our Souls
Lyrics: Frederick Herman Kaan
