Let’s Get Our Shit Together
Dude.
You fixed my car (I have it on good authority that dudes don’t just fix a lady’s car unless they’re trying to impress her). You helped me move my piano, take down closet doors, install a new shower head (I just couldn’t get that old one off by myself) and you came to see my newly purchased home just out of pure excitement for me.
You gave me a $50 Bed Bath & Beyond gift card for my birthday because of my new home and you have offered to help me re-install my closet doors just because I hinted I couldn’t do it on my own. You have confided to me some of your deepest anxieties and secrets and heartbreaks over the last several months. You hugged me three times in one 45-minute span the last time we saw each other.
You even put a little turkey emoji on your text when we were wishing each other Happy Thanksgiving.
You’re so damned sweet and lovely and our friendship is definitely real. And yes, we’re both going through some stuff we have to deal with but...why not now? Why not us?
I’m so fucking in love with you, it’s not funny. God knows I’ve tried not to be--for so long, you were with her, and then she gutted you and you had to move on from her. But the one constant for five years--even as I dated G.I. Jim and tried meeting others--has been you, and how much I just love you because you’re kind, and generous, and I see the flaws and the good all tangled up together in you and feel like while we both have baggage, it’s the matching kind.
The world would be a better place if we were in love with each other.
Haiku
When, finally, I Saw you again, you hugged me. Three times. Three. Yes, three.
I will wait, I will wait for you
Mumford & Sons
Kinda the story of my life with That Boy.
How?
How is it that a dude who fixes your car, gives you a $50 gift card for your birthday--and a card that mentions hugging you--helps you move your piano, is the first friend to see your new home, hugs you many times in the space of a month even though he’s your “friend” and your “trainer”--how is it, exactly, that he goes fucking silent when it comes to texting back?!
And how is it already over a month since I’ve seen him? :(
Every Picture
I posted a picture of you on my Facebook tonight.
Really, it was a picture of my sofa, and the wall gallery behind it. You are in that gallery, in a big frame with lots of pictures of my friends. Your arm is tight around my shoulders and you are leaning into me as we both grin for a selfie.
And it occurred to me that you are in every photo of me, because you’re never not on my mind. You’re always there, in every thought, in every blink as my finger hits the button and an image is captured forever.
You’re everywhere.
In October any wonderful unexpected thing might be possible.

How
How am I supposed to stop thinking about you, when everything reminds me of you? A car named the same as your street. Your favorite color...which happens to be mine, too. A Jack Russell Terrier, just like yours. Everywhere I look, constant, tiny reminders that drive home that you don’t want me as I want you. Because if you did, you’d make an effort.
Dear That Boy
Yeah, you.
The dude who helped me move a piano even though you’d had no sleep the night before. The dude who hugged me before I could even hug you in thanks.
You’re the guy who gave me a $50 gift card for my birthday, in a card with a kitten--because I’m so excited that I’ll soon be adopting a pair of kittens--and on the inside, “Here comes your birthday hug!”
You hugged me when I said, “I’m sad I won’t be working out with you anymore!” and you said, “We’ll see each other around!” I almost let that get me down, but you added, “And we’ll talk!” and then told me you definitely want to come over and meet those kittens when I get them.
I don’t know what to make of you or how to read you, and it drives me crazy because I think of you pretty much constantly and I don’t know what you want, if anything, beyond friendship.
Want
Today I had a kinda-scary moment at work. A kid started kicking a wall and getting really upset at a situation and I had to talk him down. I managed, and I’m proud of that.
But damn, all I want tonight is to curl up on the couch with That Boy and tell him. We’re just not there yet.
Langston Hughes' Harlem home has shot up in value in recent years. A group of writers is raising money to save it from being turned into condos or coffee shops.
Ivy still grows on the front of Langston Hughes’ home in Harlem. There aren’t many houses like it left in New York City. Real estate agents estimate it’s worth over $3 million.
And that’s before anyone talks about the fact that one of America’s great writers – a hero of the Harlem Renaissance – lived there for much of the 1950s and 60s, until he passed away. His typerwriter is still on a shelf.
Pressure to sell “Hughes House” is escalating. The current owner listed it for a mere $1 million a few years ago, but it didn’t sell. For now, the home sits empty. The owner doesn’t live there. No one does. Paint is chipping off the front steps.
Renee Watson thinks it’s a tragedy. That’s why she started an Indiegogo campaign to raise $150,000 to rent the home and turn it into a cultural center honoring Hughes.
“The more Harlem changes, the more I’m motivated to do something,” says Watson, a writer who lives nearby, and has watched gentrification flood in. A Whole Foods is set to open in the area early next year. Realtors predict prices will skyrocket even further.
“We – the community – must hold on to the space,” says Watson. “I feel a sense of urgency.”
So far, the initiative to save Hughes House has raised just over $25,000.

I just donated. Help save Hughes house!! https://www.generosity.com/community-fundraising/i-too-arts-collective
Donate. Langston Hughes home deserves better than to fall to gentrification
isn’t it ironic that one of Hughes’s most popular essays, “When the Negro Was in Vogue”, was dedicated to the detrimental effects of gentrification, appropriation, and the economic disadvantage of African Americans during the 20th century? truly wild. please donate if you can!

What Does It Even Mean?
On my birthday a week ago, That Boy mentioned having bought me a card...and that he accidentally threw it away. We laughed at his absent-mindedness and I told him, “It’s the thought that counts!”
I didn’t see him for several days, but when I finally did, he handed me an envelope when I got there to work out. I didn’t open it until I left...and yes, I calmly drove away from his house, turned onto the next street, pulled over immediately, and ripped into it.
Duh.
The card was adorable--a kitten pouncing on the front, and “Here comes your birthday hug!” inside. He wrote, “Happy Birthday, ____! Congrats on your new place!” And he gave me a $50 gift card for Bed Bath & Beyond.
Fifty dollars!
This is the first time in five years of knowing him, that he’s given me a birthday present or card. In the past, I’d usually mention, “Today’s my birthday!” or “Yesterday was my birthday!” when I saw him, and he’d wish me a happy day and that was it. This year, he figured it out on his own (Facebook) and bought me a card and a gift.
It feels like there’s a shift going in our friendship, that’s been slowly happening since he realized that his ex is actually a heartless bitch who dates other men while stringing him along. I don’t want to be a rebound, and feel confident that our long friendship would help us both guard against that.
And yesterday, he confided a lot of stuff about some family stuff he’s dealing with to me. I hugged him as I left, and it was just the tiniest bit longer than usual.
Am I right to feel hopeful?
