I’ve never done any creative writing pieces outside of school so this is definitely not the best submission but I love this song and couldn’t not write something:)

Prompt: “This is the last time I’m asking you” _____ whispered. “Why” ____ responded quickly, “you’ll break my heart, in the blink of an eye”
Sitting against the wall in her room Lily couldn’t stop the tears from shedding. She kept on asking herself “we won, why are you upset” but she knew why. Because she and James were friends. Before the match they’d laughed and ate with everyone but she wasn’t one of the many students coming up to him to flirt with him under the pretence of wishing him good luck. Not one of them who gave him a kiss on the cheek. Not someone on the receiving end of his smile, the one that made her heart flutter. Hell she was even jealous of Sirius who had his arm around James for most of their breakfast. But no she told herself, I did this to myself. It’s my own damn fault.
“Lily, I know it’s a week before school ends and I know we are, or I’d like to think we are friends now and if you don’t feel the same way then I’ll understand and I’ll use this summer and distance between us to try and get over these feelings but will you come to Hogsmeade with me?” James asked, the look in his eyes was the only thing giving away his nervousness. Lily faltered “I, uh, James, it’s not even a Hogsmede weekend” The mischievous smile took over James face “Yes but I know my way around and I promise we won’t get caught” he responded with a wink. “James” Lily said with a sigh, she liked James, he was good, funny and smarter than she ever gave him credit for but she didn't want to lose his friendship when he inevitably realized she wasn’t all he dreamt up. “This is the last time I’m asking you, '' James whispered. “Why?” Lily responded quickly, “you’ll break my heart, in the blink of an eye” James' response came so fast she thought he must’ve gone over this conversation hundreds of times in his head. But that’s why she had to say no. Because as much as she liked him, she wasn’t the perfect version he had created of her in his mind and they’d both end up disappointed and down a friend. With her head hung low came Lily’s quiet response “I’m sorry James''. She could almost feel the disappointment radiating off of his body but his voice and expression tried to make up for it “Oh, no worries Lily, I’ll see you at breakfast tomorrow” and with that he took off down the hall.
She heard the door to the bathroom she and James shared open and she tried to stop the tears flowing from her eyes. “Lily”, the concern in his voice was another dagger to the heart. Concern for a friend, not someone he loved. “Lily, are you okay? I thought I heard crying”. “Ya James, just a little stressed about the DADA essay, didn’t mean to bother you”. “No crying over school Lily, we just won the game!! School is tomorrow's problem, tonight is for the party” ''Right, how could I forget” she hoped he could hear the sarcasm in her voice. “I’m headed to the Gryffindor common room now if you wanted to come with me?” She thought she heard a sliver of hope in his voice but her mind must’ve been playing tricks on her. “No, you go ahead, I’m just gonna finish this paragraph, I’ll see you there” She heard James sigh and then a quiet “okay” before the Heads common room door closed. Taking her time getting ready Lily resolved herself to do something. Something to show him she was interested. She had to. She’d regret it if she didn't, she told herself.
Walking into Gryffindor tower Lily was ready. She would tell him, she would walk up to him and tell him! There was a Hogsmede outing next weekend and dammit she wanted to go with him! But she felt her heart drop as she looked across the common room and saw James. But it wasn’t just James, it was James and Bay. The nicest girl Lily had probably ever met. Why couldn’t he be with someone easier to hate? So that’s how Lily found herself walking towards Remus and the drinks table. She’d find him later, when he wasn’t with her. But one drink turned to three and then the butter beer turned to fire whiskey. Two more drinks later she was definitely feeling happier and freer, and then he was standing beside her.
“Hey Lily, how are you feeling?”. Lily’s heartbeat quickened, “Good, much less stressed about DADA when I’m 5 drinks in” James' laugh made her weak in the knees and she stumbled a bit. “Let’s get you sitting” James chuckled as he led her towards the couch in the corner of the room. Sitting beside him making small talk, it all felt right. Just being near him made her smile and now she finally had her chance. Turning to face James, Lily interrupted whatever he was saying about the last Potions essay. “Kiss me” Lily said using her Gryffindor bravery. The shock on James' face was quickly taken over by confusion. “Kiss me, James”. “Lily, you’re drunk”, “I’m not drunk, I have liquid courage”. “Lily, I’m not going to kiss you when-”. Her abrupt standing cut him off, he didn’t want to kiss her. He really had gotten over her. Letting her feet take her back to the drinks table, Lily hoped she could either drink and forget this night or pass it off as a drunken mistake. He didn’t like her anymore. The pain in her chest was like never before but for once she was happy about James’ adoring fans, distracting him and blocking his way to her. She was not about to talk to him now, no she needed to get drunk. Pouring herself a double shot of fire whiskey she downed it in one gulp, letting the burn overtake her pain. Pouring another Lily saw him battling through the fans, his eyes trying to connect with hers. Finishing her drink, Lily ducked out of the room. Her fear of seeing and having to talk to James made her run faster than she ever had before all the way to the head's common room. Slamming the door of her bedroom, Lily collapsed onto her bed. What an idiot. Why did she have to do that. The tears she had held back until now came rushing out of her. He didn’t like her like that anymore. He had gotten over her, just as she was falling. The world was a cruel mystery sometimes but she couldn’t help but think she deserved it after turning him down so many times. She heard the common room door open and casted a muffliato charm so he wouldn’t hear her sobs. The charm didn’t help stop the sound of him though. Knocking on her door, pleading with her to come and talk to him. But she couldn’t, not when the wound was still so fresh. It felt like hours before James knocking ceased and Lily let herself fall into a dreamless sleep.
Waking up, Lily felt her heartbeat in her head. Water. She needed water. She was almost at her door before the memories of last night came back to her. Turning back around Lily decided how she was going to play it. Pretend it didn’t happen, if he insists on talking about it, pretend you were too drunk, like he said, before he rejected you. She could hear him pacing in the common room, so Lily took her time changing and brushing her hair before she resigned herself to the fact she’d have to walk out that door to finish getting ready and finally get water. Opening the door, she saw his head snap up, as if he wasn’t expecting to see her yet. “Lily! Can we please talk?” He asked as she made her way across the room. “Not now James, I’ve got a killer headache and need some water”, before he could respond she shut the door to the bathroom. Chugging 3 glasses of water helped with the headache a little but James was still in the common room when she came back, only this time he wasn’t pacing. He was facing her, leaning against the side of the couch. “Lily, I really want to talk about last night” “There’s nothing to talk about James, I was drunk, like you said” “But did you mean it? Did you want to kiss me?” The pain and emotion in his voice stopped her walk back to her room. “Because I want to kiss you. I want you to want to kiss me” There was almost a pleading sound in his voice and it made her look into his eyes. Leaning against the wall, the questions kept popping into her head. “Why? James, last night, I- I don’t understand'' Stepping closer to her James responded “Lily, I wasn’t going to kiss you last night because we were in a crowded room and our first kiss isn’t something I feel the need to share with the rest of Gryffindor. You had also been drinking, and I didn’t want there to be any chance of you waking up and saying it was only because you were drunk.” She just stared at him, could she be hearing this properly? He wanted to kiss her last night and the way he was looking at her made her feel like he wanted to kiss her now. He was close, if she lifted her arm she would feel his chest. The one rising and falling with each breath he took. “I wouldn't have regretted it. I wouldn’t’ve woken up and regretted kissing you” Looking around the room a smile took over Lily’s features “And I’m not drunk and it looks like we're alone in the room.” The smirk he now wore, directed at her, felt almost as good as the hand resting against her cheek. “Lily, I said I wouldn’t ask you out again, and the reasoning for that still remains true” Leaning in, Lily whispered “Will you come to Hogsmeade with me?” “Yes”
