Garnet saw the look, and it made her frown just a little. Pearl had been with Rose for so long. She’d seen countless suitors come and go, but Greg had stuck around. Now Rose was having his child. Things were going to be different, and Garnet couldn’t lie. She was glad that Pearl at least knew that she shouldn’t be selfish. Even so, she still didn’t like to see her friend look the way she did.
“You are right about that. Rose does deserve to be happy,” Garnet said. “…But you do, too.” There just was no easy way of going about this. She wanted both Rose and Pearl to be happy, but couldn’t make it happen at all.
“I wish there was something more I could do. All I really can do is listen. So talk to me, Pearl. Tell me everything.” She had heard the argument, but she wanted to also hear Pearl’s thoughts on it.
“What is there to say?” Pearl sighed, sitting down and tucking her legs up against her chest. There was plenty of room for Garnet to join her, if she wished. She looked out over the waterfalls in her room, replaying the scene in her mind. It might not have been healthy to fixate on it, but she couldn’t help it.
“Why can’t you just be happy about this?!” Rose wasn’t one to make demands on Pearl’s emotions, but they’d both gotten past the point of rationality. “This is what I want!”
“Yes, we’ve established that!” Pearl snapped. “It must be so easy for you. Getting what you want and moving on. You think you can replace everything we had so easily! Replace me, replace our girls, and play happy family with your little human friend.”
A dangerous look flickered across Rose’s face. “Don’t do this, Pearl.”
The warning would have been enough, most times, but Pearl was too upset to care. “You haven’t even said their names out loud since it happened. You won’t.”
“I can’t.” Briefly, Rose looked defeated, and Pearl took her opening.
“Just do it,” Pearl challenged. “Do it. Say their names.”
“SAY THEIR NAMES, ROSE!” She hadn’t realized just how badly she’d wanted to hear it until now.
“STOP!” Rose made a low, growling noise Pearl hadn’t heard from her since the war. It was very quartzlike, actually. She drew her arm back, advancing, and Pearl gasped, fearing Rose for the first time since they’d been together. Rose seemed to snap out of her rage at that, and shook her head, her eyes filling with tears. And then she fled with a gasped, desperate apology, leaving Pearl alone to her despair.
Pearl looked back at Garnet. “I guess I should ask how much you know.” Garnet might have wanted to hear it from her, but it would help knowing where to start.
