i really agree that more characters in the film shouldve been black outside of clark, including mary kline. because srsly if youre gonna make a film with a heavy focus on systemic oppression, with a black main character that is mentally ill, you should be being veryyy aware of how that goes into the commentary when his therapist is white 😭😭 like seriously
don't be afraid
Never been about me
Armand is watching.
I thought the same before Lily mentioned it
Learn to walk again
my favorite thing about louis is he's a business major in a world of theater kids. everyone's playing psychological games with each other through theater and rock music and the fractured art of storytelling and he's like "but what are the margins on my vampire hotel"
"and i have this weird thing that happens where suddenly everyone around me disappears like the rapture's come... and i... you know... i feel him"
Still a little crazy to me that people thought Clark’s change was a bit sudden like idk I think if i spent a month in a world with no outside or sunlight and my only food was creatures that look like people I know and I had to dig out there memory foam insides with my bare hands and also one of the creatures ate my employees and also looked like me I would start acting crazy too.
if you think about mary kline in the sense that she became a therapist because she wanted to save people, then it means she went looking for clark because she wanted to save him. instead, she finds long empty corridors, and rooms that’s are echoes of an echo of memories. rooms that almost seem to reflect clark’s mind, muddled and distant and slipping away. when she sees them, when she stares directly at that reflection of the human pscyche - and as she wonders, perhaps, if this place is what tore clark apart, or if it just preyed on the parts of him that were already crumbling - she begins to lose hope. and then, after clawing her way out only to be brought to that interrogation room, i think she loses hope fully. because mary kline cannot save clark, and she cannot even save herself either. just like mary kline couldn’t save her mother
the backrooms movie made me realize that my deepest fear isn't monsters or labyrinths or even death. it's failure.
seeing clark divorced, struggling with money, no friends, sitting and drinking and festering in his own self pity brought tears to my eyes faster than anything ever had before.
I saw him out of breath hopping around on the peg leg with the pirate impression talking about how you don't even need credit to buy from him and I was so close to sobbing it wasn't even funny. putting on a face when you're breaking down inside with no hope is terrifying to me.
I was so sad during the kitchen table scene because everything Mary said was true, he was lost now. It's like seeing someone you wished would succeed just give up and fall asleep in their grave.
Clark is gonna stick with me for a long time.
i really love the motif of windows in Backrooms. mary’s book being called “the window within”. the curtains in her office always being drawn. the shot of her behind glass in her own home during the gathering at her house. clark looking through the window into his own house. him being unable to see kat through the glass she can see him through. the window in mary’s mother’s house. the windows in the hospital her mother is brought to that only look out to another building. the drawing that mary finds of captain clark reaching someone up towards a window. the fale window in clark’s “home” in the backrooms that just looks out to more of the same empty space. the window in the interrogation room that’s too high to see out of (and thus to determine if it’s real). the fact that the backrooms lacks any windows to a true “outside space”, and how terrifying that makes it. there is no window within. or, at least, not one that any of them can find
the penis was a component of the extinct mammal known as the "human." while its true function is unclear, experts believed it allowed them to locate rare tubers hidden in the soil
Glassblowers and hat makers are so funny bc they're so obviously insanely skilled in these difficult crafts and 9 times out of 10 they're using that skill to make the tackiest shit you've ever seen
