idk what teenager needs to hear this but please stop watching south park
someone else out there can probably explain it better than me but south park absolutely rotted peopleās brains. maybe some of you are too young to remember, but 10-15 years ago people were honestly so vile because of that show.
south park made it funny to be antisemitic, racist, sexist, transphobic, homophobic, ableist etc. it introduced forms of bigotry to a lot of kids who otherwise wouldnāt have considered it otherwise.
your memes arenāt cute. I donāt care if youāre drawing those characters with your gay/trans headcanons or whatever. Iām surprised this is even an issue in 2023
OK, OK, as someone who actually watched the first several seasons as a kid (largely because my stepbrothers had the DVD collections) and eventually stopped because of how vile it was, I just have to say that those in the comments complaining about how those who take offense to it don't have "media literary" because it's "satire" are the pot calling the kettle black.
Like, if you watched this show with any ounce of critical analysis, you'll see that, as others have pointed out, this show isn't satirizing conservatives; this show is satirizing those who care passionately about changing the world. The show blatantly advocates a "do nothing, don't rock the boat" approach and has several episodes end with the message of "if you try to do anything to affect change, you'll have fucked yourself".
Sure, Cartman is framed as a bully that everyone hates, but the show also frames his ideology/words as true. He's not hated because he spouts hateful things; he's hated because of the way he says them. Several episodes has Cartman's assertions turn out to be right -- though the way he's right is often wrong. This is peak ye olde conservatism and respectability politics -- it's not about what you say, it's about how you say it.
So the kids/teenagers who are getting "haha being a bigot is funny" out of this show are the ones who are actually consuming the show the way it's intended. Because that's literally the message of the show. That nothing matters, and the only thing you can do about it is joke through it. And that there's no joke too awful as to be off-limits.
People saying that the show isn't about bigotry are precisely the ones who are missing the point.
Want to emphasize this again:
this show is satirizing those who care passionately about changing the world.
