Goats are terrifying. Everyone knows that. They attack children, knock out cows and kill elderly men. Foundations like the CGTF exist to help people deal with their childhood goat trauma.
But goats didn’t always have such a bad rap! Amaltheia, often represented as a goat, is said to have been Zeus’ foster mother that suckled the infant-god in a cave in Cretan Mount Aigaion (“Goat Mountain”). Once Zeus reached maturity, he crafted his thunder-shield (aigis) from her hide and the horn of plenty (keras amaltheias or cornucopia) from her crown.
Many different versions of her story exist. One talks of Amaltheia as a maiden of extraordinary beauty that married the Libyan king Ammon. Others describe her as a goat-tending nymph of uncertain parentage, who brought Zeus up on the milk of her goat.
