There’s something they don’t tell you about adventures, about long journeys, about exploration, it’s that it’s heavy. Each new place, new sight, smell, each new turn around a foreign corner, drops a gram or two of joy into the pocket folds of your heart. Your strength grows as you wander, you don’t notice the weight. Sometimes, before your heart knows to grow to hold more, we weep at the excess when we see things that steal our breath. We forget ourselves and swear, often out loud, that we are home. Inevitably though, we must return to the home we left behind, and this is when it happens. All that weight, all that mass that joy possesses, all that our hearts collected, no longer feels light, at all. We lay in our own beds, stare up to ceilings that feel lower than they ever have before, and we feel our hearts sink below our spines, too full, for our mattress to hold, for us to understand. All we have seen, all we have felt, all we now understand, becomes a brick of an anchor, and we ache to keep filling it. We ache for the wild journey we left behind. We miss the spontaneity, the map sprawled out, the newness of each morning. We miss feeling new, ourselves. It’s heavy, wandering off into the unknown, it’s heavier still, coming back home.

over coffee with my mom this morning: “sometimes we hesitate to invite people into our life because we feel like our space isn’t good enough yet. things are a little messy, or our place settings don’t match, or our situation isn’t quite what we want it to be. don’t let that stop you. invite people in anyway.”

Until Jesus is enough, nothing else will be.

We are not diplomats but prophets, and our message is not a compromise but an ultimatum.

Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone’s face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits, here in this world and the life to come.
