Tom Warren Portrait Studio at Fashion Moda South Bronx March 1983. I went up to the Moda in December 1982 as the Portrait Studio, to an event by Ansen Seeno. There was a scene at the Moda, a bit of Paradise in the Ghetto. The Portrait Studio melted into it, ate it up. I’ve never seen installation shots of my show, don’t have much of an image of it in my mind. Judging from portraits I took while the show was up and what was in the background, I either created totems of 20”x16” prints or a grid of them. integrating the photos with the other art on the walls, it was a three person exhibit. I had printed two 70”x52” Blow-Ups of group shots of the “Crew” from that December night, which were hung high, maybe one above the entrance. I returned to the Moda during the show and also periodically for the next two to three years to take portraits. Always a rewarding experience. The portraits were taken for the Community, that was the Modem Operondus of the Portrait Studio. I made it up there on a weekday afternoon during the show. After school the place filled up with kids, some of whom were in the photos. Wow, a nice place to be. Years later maybe in 2008, attending a South Bronx event I snuck out to a pizza restaurant. As I enjoyed my slice the place filled up. I wondered if it was remembered what I had done at the Moda back in the early 1980’s.
