Tom Bayliss: Floor Games of the Recumbent Strategist
Opening night: Friday 2 August, 2013. 6-9pm
The Toolshed presents an exhibition of new work by Tom Bayliss.
In 1911 H.G. Wells published “Floor Games” and “Little Wars”, a concise set of rules for children’s games that would form the basis for modern tabletop war-games and strategy based pastimes. Within the text, Wells goes to great lengths to dictate items required to formulate a learning/play environment vital to development of the “Men of tomorrow”. There are precise demands for certain proportions of floor tiles, tin soldiers and numerous boxes of bespoke wooden blocks to be donated by a benevolent Uncle. Tom Bayliss is the Recumbent Strategist, a conceptual Hobbyist and an armchair fantasist in the Hornby scale. He creates scaled representations of briefly glimpsed and re-imagined structures to populate his “post-model village” landscapes. Tom uses and abuses the formula dictated by Wells’ theory of “play” to create his Wunderkammer-like collection of unrelated 3-dimensionally realised memories. Structures are selected through chance encounters and reconfigured according to his sense that the world is a series of interchangeable components. The objects are shifted into an environment of plywood tectonic plates and artificial grass and flattened into primary colours akin to those of wooden toys and early learning vernacular objects.

“Driven by a fascination and respect for the history of brand management and corporate identity, the design group INTERNATIONAL LAWNS undertake projects by both commission and personal motivation. Of particular relevance to Frome, INTERNATIONAL LAWNS are excited to premiere their unsolicited re-branding of the Co-op. The project was inspired by an engraving of Robert Owen, founder of utopian socialism and the cooperative movement, made by Henry Thomas Ryall of Frome, royal engraver to Queen Victoria, after a painting by William Henry Brooke. In the manner of Ryall, INTERNATIONAL LAWNS’ ‘Co-op’ is a re-working, an interpretation of Raymond Loewy’s decommissioned cloverleaf logo. We plan to present this to the Co-op, perhaps next year, with the suggestion that it is superior to their replacement by Harry Pearce and John McConnell of Pentagram and should be considered for immediate re-implementation.* In contrast to the façade of resolute self-belief characterized by most large design groups, INTERNATIONAL LAWNS practice a philosophy of doubt, questions and distraction. For the duration of this exhibition visitors will be able to contact the agency with requests and ideas that the team will process and return. We will also be showing examples from our LAWN archive.” *In this case especially, we are prepared to gracefully accept the probable rejection of our recommendation. We are aware that Pentagram was founded on principles of lateral equality compatible with the cooperative movement. The Toolshed is pleased to welcome INTERNATIONAL LAWNS, a design agency run by artists Andrew Curtis and Niall Monro. -:-

We are currently making Tribble like creatures. They are curious objects, everyone who has touched one has really liked it but its not obvious why. There seems to be more of a reason to liking them other than their softness and lightness. We connect with them and they seem cute to us, even though they are quite abstract to us, this also makes them quite surreal. Responses so far have been to hold them, throw them, cuddle them, stroke them, roll them against your face and photograph them.
