say what you want about lyonel baratheon but he was the first and only person to actively seek out duncan after the trial. he limped all the way out to that elm tree on his bespoke balenciaga antler crutch. he kept duncan’s horrible little secret that he’s not actually knighted even when it may have benefited him to use it to make him dependent on his offer.

lyonel may be nonchalant about it, but his care for duncan is very genuine.

One of my favorite parts of Lyonel and Dunk’s conversation under the elm tree is how casual Lyonel tries to be about his offer.

When he says “hey you could come back with me” as if the thought just crossed his mind, passing and causal as can be. A fanciful whim at most.

But I just KNOW that he’d been thinking about it for a while. Fantasizing about the life he and Dunk would have together after the tournament. He’d probably been thinking about it since that first night in Lyonel’s pavilion. So much so that reality and fantasy begin to blur, and in his mind Dunk has already accepted offer.

However Lyonel is a lord, a high born one at that. And he can’t be seen wanting or nearly begging something from someone. Never mind that someone being a low born hedge knight. So he has to play casual and indifferent.

You can see that ‘indifference’ fade as it becomes clearer that Dunk is more concerned with mourning Baelor than he is about thinking about Lyonel’s proposal. Lyonel gets angry, pissed even.

And that irks him even more because it just confirms that whatever Lyonel wants with Dunk is anything but causal. He genuinely wants him, like he’s never wanted anything before. Or since.

He can’t be casual about it, but Lyonel knows no other way to approach the situation without revealing his true wants to the hedge knight.

Because of this, Dunk doesn’t think Lyonel is serious about him coming to Storm’s End so he declines his offer. He refuses to live at the whims of a man who already seems disinterested in him and his fresh grief.

Dunk ends up looking at him with indifference and even some disappointment. So disinterested in Lyonel’s offer. It’s a look that haunts Lyonel all the way back to Storm’s End and then some.
