David Hockney
Born 1937, Bradford, England; died 2026, London
Celia in a Green Hat
1984
Lithograph
Collection of the David Hockney Foundation
David Hockney found a regular muse in his friend Celia Birtwell, the British textile designer. Celia in a Green Hat shows his effervescent, singularly talented subject commanding the sheet with her open face, bright red hair, and vivid green eyes.
At the time, Hockney was increasingly inspired by early twentieth-century European artists, favoring dramatic effect over naturalism. He was especially drawn to Matisse's use of color and line, his sensibility, and his sustained relationships with models.
