Jinx tapped her chin trying to picture the scenario. She couldn’t say she’s ever experienced something like that. She was only ever an only child and even with the Hive whom she considered her brothers, they never tried to lecture her. They could try though. “Can’t relate. Usually I’m the one doing the yelling or doing the bitching. But you’re pretty close to your fam aren’t you? Even with your supposed dick of a brother.” 

She wasn’t even aware Barter had a brother, but she assumed the other wasn’t as close to them as she was to the other two siblings. She’d seen the eldest around-that one seemed bossy, and she’d heard enough of the younger sibling- very bubbly. // @toughestfightcr

“Not, uhh-” Suddenly shifting uncomfortable, her eyes flicked away. “Not with Joseph, no.” It was probably both their faults. Joseph was a bitter piece of shit, and Barter had gone out of her way to provoke her. But, hell, that didn’t make her responsible for his shitty actions or the path he travelled. 

“The others, yeah. I probably pull their piggytails too much though.” Well she was a bit of bully, but they did love each other. “But we’re all pretty close.” // @jfc-jinx​

“You don’t know that. My memory is great!” Blossom had an amazing memory! Her memorization skills were ridiculous. Her memory rarely failed her. Atleast as far as she remembered. The eldest sibling followed the other into the kitchen, slouching against the counter. 

“Not that badly. Just slight allergy. The reese’s peanut butter cup thing was ages ago and I warned you about it before I did it.”

That was a slip of judgement on her part, but in her defense, she was twelve years old and starving and trying to prove a point. She couldn’t remember what that point was currently, but it was worth it. It was definitely worth it. // @toughestfightcr

“No peanuts. I’m not having you going into anaphylactic shock because you think you can ‘take it’. Which, by the way, you can’t. Because you didn’t answer, you’re getting good old chocolate chip.” She was not going to have this argument with someone as high as Blossom was right now.

Milling around her kitchen, Barter set the oven and started prepping. “You’re staying here with me until you’re feeling better, and we’ll cure your munchies.” Getting out the bowls, Barter started measuring and mixing her ingredients together. “Do you want them soft or hard?” // @blcsscmcd​

“It’d be worth it!” Jinx defended her decision. She’d regret it in the moment for fucking sure, but right now, it was damn appealing. Plus, people always seemed to think she had a tiny appetite when that was farthest thing from the truth. She lived with five other guys nearly half the time, she knew how to fight for her food and eat others portions in retaliation. The thief cackled in her seat, “That’s what they all say. What’d your siblings have to say about his new shiner?” 

She let out a low whistle, shooting her an impressed look, a lazy smirk drawing itself onto her face. “Kick some ass Barter. I’ll be cheering for ya to take home that gold. Besides, can’t think of anyone who has a meaner right hook than you.” // @toughestfightcr

“They were very distraught over it, riding my ass about it for a fucking week. Going on and on about how I could have taken his eye out. God, they took it worse than the professor. He just smiled and told me it’s okay, but that I needed to be careful in the future.” Thinking about it, Barter could still feel the resentment to the scolding. She hated when they all ganged up on her like that. “My brother was the only one who didn’t bitch, but he’s a dick so that doesn’t count.”

Chuckling, Barter sat up a bit straighter at the praise. “Oh, trust me, I’m looking forward to kicking some ass.” // @jfc-jinx​

“Is that why you kept giving me your raisin cookies,” Her eyes narrow hazily recalling the memories. It was still an event that happened in the present. Raisins weren’t bad either! They were just… old grapes! Oh god, they were killing elderly grapes. How awful of them! They were grape murderers! The realization sends her reeling that she physically freezes in place.

“But the dough is the best part,” Blossom follows after, a whine in her throat, “Peanut butter cookies. Yum. We can share.” Wasn’t she allergic to peanut butter? Or was it something else. Was she allergic to anything at all?? But they were so good though… // @toughestfightcr

“Yeah but.. it’s not like you’re going to remember this conversation.” Barter was doing her best to take care of her sister in this condition, surely Blossom couldn’t be mad at her once she came down from her high. 

“The dough will also make you sick, and I’m not having two problems on my hands. I can make eggless dough next time. Touch the dough and I’ll smack your hand with a wooden spoon, got it?” At least Barter hoped the threat stuck.

Crinkling her nose at those words, Barter shot him a side glance. “And what the hell’s wrong with saving cats from trees?” Why would anyone think saving an animal was something to mock someone over. Baran may have considered the display impressive, if they were about to get into a fist fight. When it came down to wrestling, it didn’t much matter how hard or how fast you could punch. It was all grappling and holds, and someone that size didn’t look like they’d do a whole lot of good trying to pin anyone, never mind himself, to the mat. Hell, all he had to do was sit on her and she wasn’t going anywhere.

“I do that out loud? My bad,” Even if he were a better actor, Baran wouldn’t have tried to mollify the woman. It had been his intent to be as insincere as possible, They competing against each other, enemies, and while he doubted she stood a chance of making it passed the first round, he wasn’t about to be nice to her out of pity.

“Was just wonderin’ who you musta paid off to get this far.”

“That’s fine. Sometimes, when it hurts to think too hard, the body just skips the brain entirely and fumbled through the mouth,” Barter shot back, pressing her pointer against her cheek and making a barfing motion. Scoffing, Barter turned her back on the guy once again and began to stretch. Like she hadn’t dealt with guys like this all her life. If she could step toe-to-toe with three Rowdies, she could deal with this punk.

“You mustn’t know who the fuck I am. Everything about me is tight and that includes my ass, because I don’t part with money for any fucker. Got here through work and determination. And not.. you know..” Raising her arm, Barter made a jabbing motion against her skin, like she was injecting herself with an invisible needle. Was it rude to suggest the guy probably took steroids? Well.. it was probably just as rude as suggesting the only way she could get here was by paying her way. // @thegroundshakes​

Jinx would eat them all day every day if she could-and at times she was very tempted to-but her line of work needed her in top shape, so she had to be a bit more mindful of what she ate. She couldn’t help but laugh loudly at the statement, “You gave your dad a black eye? Holy shit, now you gotta tell me that story.”

“What the hell,” Her jaw dropped and her eyes narrowed, “You’re going to be so exhausted by the end of it.” Jinx didn’t doubt Barter’s strength or stamina, but those were intensive sports and she’d be competing with the best of the best. No doubt some worthy competition, but it’d be more intensive than what it normally would be competing against an average person. // @toughestfightcr

“You know the premise of a food eating contest is eating fast. You’re just cruising for a brain freeze,” Barter laughed off. Then again, she wouldn’t be surprised if people just signed up for free food. “Look! I.. have always been competitive! My siblings refused to play with me, so SOMEONE had to! I didn’t mean to hit the ball that hard!” The fit of laughter she broke into afterwards though.. suggested otherwise. But she really had been only gunning for the win!

“That’s the plan,” Barter shrugged off, offering a lazy peace sign. “I’m a fighter, and I’m always looking for a fight. If I’m not practically on my last leg by the end of it, then what’s the point?” // @jfc-jinx​

Looking around at his competition, Baran didn’t even bother trying to hold back the snort of derision. This was the best the universe had to offer? These were the poor, condemned souls that were supposed to try to wrestle him into submission? The thought of any of them lasting more than a minute was laughable alone, he didn’t think his mind even capable of considering a loss to one of them.

Like the woman to his left. Sure, she looked tough enough. The close-cropped hair was smart for CQC, and she had that resting bitch face on lock, but she was just so small! He knew she must’ve earned her spot, but she was at least a foot, maybe a foot and a half, shorter than him, and he had a feeling she’d be similarly outclassed muscle-wise. Even with years of anecdotal evidence that the small ones could still be threat, mainly from Jinx, this was wrestling.

He couldn’t stop the laugh as he watched her stretch, thinking just how easily she’d break if they fought.

Someone was laughing at her. Even through the filtered noise of her earphones, Barter could hear the smug laughter. She knew exactly who it was too. Hard not to when the guy was a fucking giant. Not that Barter even spared him a look at this point. No. It was better to be above and show just what she was made of.

Face rested in her neutral ‘fuck everyone’ stare, Barter finished wrapping up her hands and strode towards a hanging punching bag. The thing too was massive. Heavy and hard to move. Perfect for a quick warm up, some practice for another sport, and showing off.

Getting into position, Barter took a calming breath before beating the bag. Her punches were heavy and swift, the bag slowly moving and swinging, making more motion with each rapid punch. The chain squeaked in protest with every hit rocking harder and harder until her last punch sent it rocking off the hook, slapping against the wooden floor with a large slam. Anyone who hadn’t been watching before.. well, they certainly heard the noise.

Pulling out one earbud, Barter glared over her shoulder, just barely out of breath as she stared the guy down.

“What don’t they have for the Olympics.” Jinx snorted, rolling her eyes. She was done for Olympics before they even began. She was still competing of course, just for one category, but other than that she didn’t care too much. Baran was competing, so she’d cheer for him, and maybe a couple others if the people who actually mattered were competing too. “They even have fucking table tennis.”

“What’re you competing in?” It wasn’t so much a matter of if Barter was competing, so much as what. Jinx would probably hang around and root for her too on the sidelines. // @toughestfightcr​

“Food eating contests. And, let me tell you, if there was one I’d be gunning for that first prize.” Though she’d hope that it would at least be the last competition. It wouldn’t do her well to completely fuck up her diet and blow chunks in front of the entire asteroid. “Hey, table tennis can get brutal. It’s faster than regular tennis and they will give you one heck of a black eye. I know because I gave my father one.” She did feel bad.. after the fact.

“Oh God now you’re making me think.” Leaning her head back, Barter scratched at her neck as she thought. “Athletics, boxing, taekwondo, wrestling, and freestyle wrestling. Basically, I’m looking to kick ass.” // @jfc-jinx​

Jinx hated everything that came after the blackout. Mostly everything. There was fear, panic, and mistrust in the air, but no one did anything. People went to their jobs and went back home. There was an eerie calm in the air as if everyone was afraid to make a move incase of repercussions. It still lingered in the air. It was all so boring….! “Well, you’ve certainly gotten more than week. I just stayed inside, checked up on my boys, and stayed in my safe little box.” That was an absolute lie. “But hey, you probably got the best workout considering everything. I bet you have the biggest biceps at the station~” // @toughestfightcr

Barter didn’t really believe Jinx. She didn’t want to throw around baseless accusations that her friend did anything.. questionable, but Jinx didn’t seem the type to sit back and enjoy the finer things in life. And, hell, she’d just finished trying to convince Barter to physically attack someone. Yeah, Jinx was full of shit.

Snorting a laugh, Barter nodded her words at the though. “I mean, I’ve got to at least make the top ten, right? Think they’ll have an arm wrestling portion for the Olympics?” // @jfc-jinx​

Relief crashed into her in the form of a wave, washing over her small form from the place that Barter kissed her cheek until it resonated throughout her entire form. This was good. This was better. She was good. Barter loved it! She couldn’t believe it. Well, she could, but anxiety couldn’t believe it before she got the confirmation that Barter didn’t think it was dumb.

She couldn’t wait to hold it in the stands for Barter. Laying it down gently on the coffee table, Cora nodding as the woman before her spoke. Her children. Amazing. Barter really did love those plants as if they could love her back and Cora could never judge her for it because she was 2000% sure those plants loved Barter more than anything else. 

“Tea, please!” Her smile passed through her words, solidifying them and Cora felt herself beginning to relax. “Do you you have peppermint?” @toughestfightcr​

Turning on the kettle, Barter set down a couple mugs for them. Barter’s a vibrant shade of green, and a powder blue for Cora. It was her mug for Bonna when they came over, but for now Cora could use it. Maybe she should invest in a mug for the other..

“Uhh, I don’t, actually.” She didn’t drink enough tea to need such fancy flavours. “But I can add mint extract.” Just a couple drops should be enough. Searching through her baking and sweets cabinet, Barter pulled out the dark bottle with a little green top, setting it down as she started working on their drinks. “How do you have it? Sugar? Milk? Strong?” // @littlewccd​

Wash watched the half-drowned little beast run off, not all that concerned with where it was going. On the one hand, he could completely understand not sticking behind for the animal. It sucked, and it wasn’t a decision he’d wish on anyone, but it wasn’t human. When it came down to it, people were what mattered. He’d joined the army to protect humanity, not their pets. On the other, he couldn’t see himself leaving Loki behind no matter what the circumstances.

Then again, most people were highly trained military operatives with a technologically advanced combat exoskeleton at their disposal. Which probably was better off left unsaid, “Yeah, sure. You okay?”

“Never. Better.” Barter answered drily, staring down at her saturated and fur-covered clothes. She was a mess, but it was worth it. “Dude, don’t stress it. I have been through much much worse. Trust me, I’ll live. Thanks for the help, man.” She was concerned for the dog, and the amount of food it probably had in that time, but that was something she could worry about alone. // @superagentwashingtub​

Cora had been made of nerve endings and short breaths waiting for her girlfriend to open the door, the foot steps leading up to the eventuality causing an elevated heart rate only matched by an Olympic runner. She debated becoming one herself, a need that told her to run as fast as she could down the hallway until she felt like she could be safe again. The intrusive thought was just that ─ intrusive ─ Cora knowing better than to bolt when it came to Barter. 

For a multitude of reasons. Namely that Barter wouldn’t be like other people, Cora knew that for a fact. That and the security guard could most definitely run faster than Cora could ever dream of.

But the look on Barter’s face when she opened the door made it all go away. The shit eating grin that took hold of kissable lips and Cora could help but mimic the emotion that she was sharing so willingly. 

How long have you been working on this?

Oh what a loaded question that was, Cora shrugging sheepishly, though her smile did not falter. 

“Couple d─d─days, working on it here and and there.” Cora spoke through her smile, letting it carry her words along with the over all tone of happiness. “D─D─D─Do you like it?” She struggled more than she should have with that sentence, nervousness choking down words even as she knew that she had no reason to be nervous. 

Too bad her anxiety didn’t agree with that statement. // @toughestfightcr​

Barter could tell her girlfriend was struggling. The nervousness was palpable. Between Cora and her own siblings, Barter had learnt not to point it out or make it into a big deal. Instead, Barter studied the sign a beat longer, grinning ear to ear.

“I love it,” she reassured, gently grabbing Cora’s wrist and leading her inside slowly. “I’ll love it more when you’re holding it up for me in the stands.” Kicking the door closed behind them, Barter lent in to peck a kiss against Cora’s cheek before moving away.

“You can set it down, I’m just watering my kids. Do you want a coffee? Tea? Then you can show me all the work you put into that bad boy.” // @littlewccd​

“Cookies aren’t bad! No cookies are bad! Bonna would agree with me!” She tried reaching for it behind her, her fingers just grabbing onto air. After a couple seconds, the eldest sibling dropped her hand back onto her lap with a large pout. 

“Can I atleast get water to go with it? I’m thirsty.” 

Her mouth felt uncomfortably dry, her tongue feeling heavier than usual. Blossom looked over her shoulder, eyes wide and sparkling. “Can I help make the cookies too?” Sure she wasn’t the greatest in the kitchen-far from it-but she could still help out! Hand her ingredients, offer her suggestions to make them better. Blossom would be good this time. // @toughestfightcr​

“Clearly you’ve never suffered the horror of thinking a cookie is chocolate chip, only to be disappointed by raisins. Come on, get up. We’ll go get you some water and get baking.” Swinging her legs around carefully not to knock her sister down, Barter helped Blossom up gently.

“Okay, fine, you can help. But you have to do what I say, don’t eat the dough, and stay away from the oven.” Like this, Barter didn’t trust her not to burn herself. “What kind of cookies do you want?” // @blcsscmcd​

“No.” Her expression pinched, though in actuality it was a hard maybe. “Like spook her. Shake her up a little. A lot.” She’d seen cops do worse. She knows some on the force could definitely do a lot worse. “Unfair because they tried to overpower you with their numbers or unfair to them because you’re a lot tougher than they gave you credit for?” Jinx raised a brow, if anything both were probably true. “But it must’ve gotten boring after the blackouts. You don’t exactly seem people mobbing to commit crimes anymore.” // @toughestfightcr

Snorting back a laugh, Barter rolled her eyes at Jinx’s answer. Was she the perfect cop? Hell no. Did she take things a little too far sometimes? Hell yeah. But she wasn’t that petty. “Both, probably. I mean, I came out on top everytime. Some would escape in the chaos but we tracked them down eventually. But they had us working non-stop for days, and even I’m mortal. By the time it ended, I was ready to crawl into a hole and die.” Shrugging, Barter had to agree, it was a little boring. But she needed the break. “Give me a week off before we delve back into hell, thanks.” // @jfc-jinx​

Had she taken too long making this? Maybe. Was she nervous to show it to Barter? More maybe. Was she going to do it anyway? Hell yes. Cora stepped up to the doorstep of her girlfriend, a broad yet tight smile on her face as she took a deep breath.

In her hands, facing the door, was a large sign made of poster board and way too many green sparkles. Barter’s name was very carefully drawn on it, along with the symbols from her sports of choice, Cora having spent far too long going back and forth between the google images that she found and the first three attempts of this sign, trying to get it right. Sizing the symbols so that they would all fit was tiresome but worth it for her multi-talented girl.

It had to be perfect, after all.

Cora shifted the sign to be held in one hand before she knocked. // @toughestfightcr

Barter had been in the middle of tending to her plants when she’d heard the knock on the door, some moved to the livingroom to get a little more sunlight with music playing quietly. It was one of her tranquil moments and Barter was a little disappointed to be interrupted.

At least.. she had been until she opened the door. There was no way she could be disappointed in that face.

“Babe-” she started, but Barter had to reel herself back and read the sign. Oh that was.. that was fucking cute. “Oh my God,” Barter breathed, grinning wide as she read it. She was going to have to get use to being covered in glitter again, because that shit was about to get everywhere. “How long have you been working on this?” // @littlewccd​

“You should fuck her up the next time you see her,” She paused, “Well as much as the situation lets you. A sort of ‘you should’ve just taken the token I gave you’. I would’ve handed her ass to her, she’s the one who said no thanks.” She didn’t get security, but she definitely understood freebies. If someone gave you one, you take it no questions asked. Whoever this Reese was, she was a dumbass for not taking the pass when Barter offered. “You never told me what happened to you during the blackout? So, you’d get into any scuffs? Actually, don’t answer that I know you did-” The blackouts were a wild time, “-but I can’t imagine anyone actually gave you a real fight.”

“It’s a fact that never gets old,” Jinx settled into the couch with a happy sigh, she did love her ego being stroked. // @toughestfightcr

“You want me to exercise police brutality?” Barter pressed, a brow raised in question. Sure.. maybe she took it too far sometimes, but that was usually out of uniform. She was trying not to be so needlessly violent, and Barter wasn’t a fan of corrupted cops to begin with. Groaning, Barter reached up to rub at her temples. “Too many. No one gave me a good one on one, but when you’re the first on a scene to a riot with ten or so fucks ganging up on you, they get in a few swings. Wasn’t exactly fair fights all round.” // @jfc-jinx​
