What is whump?

Whump is a kind of fanfiction or headcanon (in the case of this blog) that is focused on things like injury and illness. "Whump" comes from the comic book sound effect of someone being struck or falling hard, so think of whump in fandoms like people hitting their favorite characters with a big stick (or putting them in the blender). It can often be cathartic for people who are going through a tough time to imagine their faves in painful situations.

Is comfort allowed in the headcanons too?

Yup! Whump is a subgenre of hurt/comfort and while it focuses more heavily on the hurt part, comfort can absolutely be part of it!

Who can I submit headcanons for?

Anyone involved in Hermitcraft or the Life Series except for Skizz (here’s why)! Preferably the headcanons will also be regarding their Hermitcraft or Life Series personas, but you can also submit for series that include those creators, including Empires, Vampires SMP, etc.

In light of recent events, though headcanons about him were not on this blog in the first place given that he is neither a Hermit nor Lifer, I will not be accepting asks that have V!Avid in them.

“Headcanons” about the real creators will not be allowed. Please use discretion when making headcanons that you are separating the creator and their persona. Mod response to why this is here.

Are things like age regression, mental illnesses, and gender and sexuality headcanons allowed?

Yup, as long as it’s respectful and clearly about the character, do whatever you want.

How will things be tagged?

Everything will be tagged with the name of the player, the series, and any content warnings that feel applicable. Duo or ship names will also be tagged.

What is off limits?

The only thing I am going to keep off limits is any headcanon regarding sexual assault. I am also wary about headcanons regarding homophobia, transphobia, sexism, and racism. You can send them, but do not involve any other creators. I will not post a headcanon that involves a specific creator or group being bigots.

in honor of the record-setting heat wave that recently happened in europe:

a lot of the hermits are heat sensitive. gem, pearl, and cleo the most:

gem was raised pretty far north, and it was a lot cooler there. during the heat wave, she would curl up in a ball in her basement, looking for any escape from the heat. when it was especially bad, she'd just sob and sob, completely overwhelmed by it.

pearl's wings absorb a lot of heat, and, unlike grian, she's not used to desert heat. she does her best to stay out of the sun, but she also does her best to get to gem's house. on bad days, when it gets really hot, she sometimes gives up halfway there, and just hides under a tree somewhere until the sun goes down.

cleo might just have it the worst. on really hot days, her flesh starts to rot and melt off her bones. if she spends too long outside, her blood heats up so much that everything just. hurts.

Grian and Pearl are siblings, right?

Sometimes, when they fight, it gets physical.

They roughhouse pretty carelessly, and they’re both pretty strong and physically weak, so they can really hurt each other.

Fights have resulted in a nasty scar on Grian’s neck, and a retaliatory gash on Pearl’s side.

No one ever wins these fights, and it can take days for them to cool off.

(When they do, the two hide out, watch movies, and cry. They’re two halves of the same fucked up story)

Due to secretlife, Lizzie often often has flashbacks to the void the suffocating feeling as she slowly died, the isolation which leads to her having panic attacks... oki?

...project onto pearl time

There's been a line of real weird medical stuff with Pearl. Despite her ability to do.. so much, there is stuff she can't do, and while it tends to be hidden, its still there. Pearl has ADSD - Autonomic Dysfunction Spectrum Disorder, and this means that a bunch of xyr body systems don't... work.. quite right. For example, she gets dizzy similar to POTS when she stands up if hangs upside down or really does anything too taxing. Her arteries and veins cannot provide enough pressure to keep the blood in the right places. This also means going upside down, for whatever reason, is magic instant headache for xem.

Another part of this is the body's temperature regulation being rather royally fricked up. And while she does have a ways to go in either direction before it becomes a problem, once xe've crosses that threshold there is no going back. This usually means that 40°C+ is met with a stay inside day with some nice ice cream, and anything below 5°C is immediate heaters and heated blankets in small spaces to warm up.

Hypermobility is another part of this, and while it isn't prevalent as much as some other parts of this, it does mean that sickness results in every joint to ever exist in xyr body to start Aching profusely. Oh, and she does use a mobility aid when needed - a beautifully made cane/walking stick with a wooden pole made from gum and a plush handle that has not yet strained or blistered her hand, and a grip on the foot (forgot what the most stable foot is, but she'd usually use that.) The object itself is handmade by Impulse and designed by Cleo (who also uses mobility aids in my au).

There's more to it, of course, but i won't make this longer and also its 3am and I am recovering from a tonsillectomy

Since vsmp, Pearl has.... days. These days are a bit (read: a lot) disassociative, and she spends a lot of time just staring at the sky or sitting with xyr feet in the river. She also resembles a wolf more than a moth those days, and it takes a lot for xem to not go hunting. Whenever these days happen, though, Cleo and Gem can tell, and it doesn't take long for one or the other to show up.

They both have different styles of calming xem too - Cleo usually sits with Pearl as a solid presence (who may not fully remember everything, and it's obvious that Pearl does, but what matters is that she's there), and envelops Pearl in some of the best hugs xe've ever gotten. Cleo also grounds Pearl in that presence aspect - having someone just to breathe with often slowly brings her back to the ground.

Gem, on the other hand, prefers to do things. Usually that's repetitive tasks, or some form of art (sculpting is the go-to, and Pearl makes... oddities, on these days, a lot of things with teeth that scream of brutal hope) and the hands on things drag xem out of the trance and into the work at hand. Usually, it gets Pearl talking too, and she usually feels so much better for it.

And yeah, both of them turn up half the time, and it usually ends in a gentle discussion over baking, or brewing home-made tea and talking about constellations, or stargazing while working the fields.

As for Pearl, well. She's eternally grateful that they ever show up. Those days are filled with vindictive visions of past horrors, and just because they got worse after vampires, doesn't mean they weren't always happening... and for a long time, she told herself xe could weather it alone, make it out fine - but stargazing with muddy hands next to two people she loves? That's a much better end to those days.

Welsknight has gotten heatstroke SO MANY TIMES because he refuses to take off his armor

He'll be in 100 degree weather and in a whole ass suit of armor just doing manual labor. It is a regular occurrence to see him passed out and have to rush him somewhere COLDER and treat him

Multiple people have offered to build him an insulation system or something but he insists he's fine

Spellcasters have tried to cast cooling but he insists that's MUCH to whimsical

Grian had to rip out his eyes.

The Watchers are wonderful, yes. He has eternal life, and full influence over things, even people, so everything can go his way if he so wishes. Usually he doesn't interfere much.

This doesn't erase the fact that Watchers 1 and 2 took him away from his friends forcefully, shoved him into a cloak that was too big for him, and gave him a dagger and a list of instructions.

The first one on the list was unforgettable. Something along the lines of: to achieve full power, you must gouge out your eyes. You will be able to See everything.

So he did. It hurt like hell, void black blood streaming down his cheeks like tears. His beautiful blue eyes, the ones older folks always complimented him on, rest in his shaking hands. His face is desecrated.

He drops them. He can now see in more angles than he could ever dream of. Colours fill his vision, more brilliant than he's ever experienced.

His eyes are on the floor.

Pearl has to go through the same process when she wakes up. Grian holds her through it. He holds her chin up and wills her eyes to not look at the floor.

He won't ever get those eyes back. He won't ever get that mortality or morality or innocence back.

It ended when he cut the nerve.

For the theme!!!! Kind of.

Grian gets cold sometimes. Maybe its because of the void he was trapped in with the Rogue Watchers. Maybe its the snowy times in the games. But either way he just gets.... cold. Like he actually begins to shiver.

The worst part is he can't go to some of the people who once made him feel safe. Martyn has grown strange and hard with him and Grian almost fears his biggest brother. Same with Ren.

It feels too weird to go to Mumbo for this; he's not the right kind, I guess.

It was too awkward with Pearl, but only for a while, so he can go to his big sister. Jimmy too, but that's his little brother. Grian's supposed to be there for him, not the other way around!

Scar is a last resort, a new addition.

If he can't go to anyone, Grian will find a lava pool or campfire and drink a fire res. He knows it's risky but he needs to feel warm, needs to be held, but.... but...

At other times, he hugs his cats or tamed wolves.

Scott once caught him zoned out and shivering, on one of the neutral worlds, and dragged him to his base and held him for a long time.

Martyn would cuddle him to oblivion if he knew. But Grian doesn't know that.

new monthly theme!!! perfect time to make my debut :)

mumbo has burns all up and down his arms due to redstoning. he doesn't wear gloves - he never felt the need - but it's gotten to the point that he's starting to lose feeling in his fingers due to the nerve damage.

it makes it hard to do redstone, of course, but that's not the hardest part. the hardest part is that he can hardly feel it, anymore, when one of his friends tries to hold his hands.

(I’m not exactly sure if this counts cause it’s more of a mental thing but anyhoo)

Joel is a shapeshifter. This normally isn’t much of a problem, but shapeshifters are a rare species with only about 1,000 individuals existing across all servers. Because of this rarity, when creating the life games, the watchers implemented magic that wiped memories from each species the different players were, except for the winners. Because of his rarity in species, only part of his memories were erased. He remembers a majority of the games, while other non-winners only remember vague feelings or snippets of emotional memories to allow the watchers to feed off of stronger emotional reactions in following games.

This situation causes Joel to isolate himself after the games and makes him more irritable and avoidant when others try to get him to open up about the games.

On most servers with infinite lives, dead bodies don't remain when a player dies, instead turning into smoke and disintegrating.

It's not the same in the Life Series, however. When a player dies for the last time, their body doesn’t disappear like normal. It stays there, as their spirit moves on, for all of their teammates to deal with. Most players bury them; it's the most respectful thing to do. Bodies at the end of the game are often left behind in the midst of the chaos and forgotten; but since the winner usually dies alongside them, it doesn't matter in the end.

Enter Secret Life Scar. He didn't die in the end. He lived on, in that flower field. Rebuilding and replanting. And burying his past.

SL!Scar had to bury everyone's dead bodies. He planted a sunflower on each grave and wrote a little message on each tombstone.

Sometimes he'll sit in front of them and pretend that he can still see them. That they were still there, watching over him. That their ghosts didn't move on and leave him behind.

Sometimes Scar feels like the dead body.

as such, grian often suffers from horrible migraines coming from the horror in his head, and, despite parrots being excellent at hearing, usually asks people to repeat what they've said a few times just because he can't hear it.
