âA knight to you, but an ogre to everyone else apparently,â he shrugged. Sterling had a habit of only being able to hold Binkyâs gaze for merely a couple of seconds at most, and it was most fleeting whenever she returned his smiles. âYou are?â He hated how he sounded so hopeful, how his eyes betrayed it, too. He had no idea she felt the same way. As she continued, however, he felt his cheeks instantly heat up, and a shy smile slowly spread across his lips despite his resistance. âI care about you a lot, soâ â he gulped, cautious in his choice of words, for he could feel the conversation steering into forbidden territory. âIâm glad.â Stupid. He was so stupid. It was so cold, and yet he hadnât given her his jacket. Hurriedly sliding it off, he leaned in slightly to throw it over her but felt his heart race, so quickly receded to hanging it off her one shoulder with a quiet âhave itâ. How fucking stupid. For some reason, her statement felt like a confession. It eased him. âYou do, you know? You do have me.â In every way possible. âNever forget that for me, will you? Even if we⌠I donât know, drift apart after school or, I donât care what it is, but if anything makes you doubt how much you mean to me, forget it. You will always have me.â
âwell, everyone ELSE just doesnât know you like i do. besides, being unwilling to indulge stupidity makes me an ogre to my cousin, also,â binks assured, and shot a pert, subtle smirk his way before he could divert his gaze. her features shifted completely, however, when he leaned toward her. she felt the tiny hairs that lined her skin stand on edge, her shoulders tense. that wasnât supposed to happen. eros could hug her and kiss the top of her head and accidentally brush her arm, and it may as well have gone unnoticed to her. mindless affection between friends. but if he came within an inch of her? binksâ heart practically jumped out of her throat. the space between them seemed vast, and simultaneously too close to bear all at once. idly, she shrugged the jacket over her narrow frame, distracted by sterlingâs request. the suggestion that, perhaps, one day, they wouldnât be as close as they were right there and then seemed absurd, and it HURT. in a sudden, unforeseen way. that heâd be absent from her side, in one way or another, was something she desperately didnât want to dwell on.
âi wonât,â the girl said, quickly. âi wonât forget it.â before her head had the chance to catch up with her heart, binksâ hand was extended, her fingers just barely catching his jaw as he began to look down again. ââââ i could NEVER lose you, sterling rosenthal. not even if i tried,â her words were doubtless, genuine and true. they were followed by a bold, fast peck to his cheek. which, in turn, was followed by binksâ hands slipping down the small of his back, where she directed one purposeful shove. it sent the boy tumbling toward the water they had sat by, and brought girlish laughter bubbling from her lips. she stood, shook off the blanket and the jacket, and followed suit, throwing herself into the lake.Â
