Forgive my ignorance, but what is an blasting rod? And what is it used for?
Hey.
The blasting rod is a wand employed by the Magus to instill fear into unruly spirits. I believe (don’t quote me on this) that the Grand Grimoire and the Grimorium Verum specify it is made of hazel, and yeh it operates much like the black handled knife as an offensive weapon, a tool to literally ‘blast’ away demons.
however in witchcraft as opposed to ceremonial magic blackthorn seems to be the wood of choice. the blackthorn blasting rod is specifically a wand to inflict harm and curses. And blackthorn being a naturally thorny wood makes it ideal to physically represent malice and ill-intent, it’s a very twisted, gnarly and dark wood with pretty nasty little thorns.
This is the blackthorn blasting rod in the museum of witchcraft and magic in Cornwall.
Had a look around the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle yesterday 😊 It was really interesting and full of amazing objects to read about ✨🌛
