so i need some advice....
I've identified as non-binary for the last 5 years and have completely social transitioned in that aspect, they/them pronouns, name change, etc. However, recently I've been thinking more about my gender and I think I might actually be a trans guy rather than nb. There have been many instances, recently and in the past, that make me question my gender again and I need some advice and ig trans man professional options lol
For example, when I legally changed my name (~3yrs ago) I purposely choose an extremely masculine name because "it would be funny to see people confused." Really though I think I was just dressing up my desire to be more masculine as a joke to like idk "get away with it" while having the name people actually call me be the shorter gender-neutral version.
When I was a kid I would basically dream and imagine what it would be like to have a d!ck which as a kid meant wondering what it would be like to pee standing up (lol).
I first started experimenting with my gender in 2020, as so many people did during quarantine, and I tried out many different pronouns with my friends and I always felt happiest when someone called me "he." But I later ended up going with "they/them" as my preferred pronouns because I started out identifying as genderfluid and they/them, I thought, encapsulated that the best. Eventually though, that later devolved into me identifying as nb and keeping they/them around.
I came out at school and had everyone call me they/them and my new name. In the beginning it was really that simple and that felt good-ish. But after a few years, the general consciousness at my school got "less woke" is the best way to put it and I started getting misgender a lot more often. I tried correctly people for a while, but it got so exhausting that by the start of my senior yr of hs (this year) I kinda gave up entirely.
And let me tell you, being called "she" makes me actively want to jump out a window (hyperbole I'm not suicidal!). It is just wrong, entirely wrong and I feel like maybe my stronger gender feelings as of late has been a response to the constant misgendering I've experienced at school rather than being transmasc? But at the same time, I was always happier being called "he" it's only now that I realize it. And I don't really feel comfortable telling anyone that I'd rather use "he/him" because I know people at my school won't accept me and I know they already have zero respect for me as person because I'm visibly queer. So for a couple months I've felt like it's pointless and that I'll just get ostracized further, so why tell anyone?
One of my closest friends is actually a passing trans guy, let's just say Chris, and I've had my far share of in depth talks with him in the last couple months about maybe being a guy. He's the only person I've actually told about questioning my gender and those conversations have been really wonderful. He's suggested many things to me to make me feel better about my identity, but most of them I've felt to scared to implement because it involves too much vulnerability to admit to people. Being trans masc and telling other people about it feels like sharing a very personal and intimate thing with the world, and it's also a fact that I'm not 100% sure about which has pushed me off telling anyone else.
My close friends would be supportive of me and I know my family would be as well. But I can't really bring myself to tell anyone else anything about my gender because of how vulnerable it feels and how suffocating my school environment is.
Luckily for me my last day of HS was the 10th!!! But now I kinda feel like I should... do something about my gender without the pressure of my evil hs....? but I don't know what to do? or if I'm actually transmasc?
I've always been very feminine as a child and even after I came out at nb yk dresses, makeup, and the like and I've always felt neutral about it? I've never felt happy to be feminine, it just was a fact that I accepted. It never felt particularly "wrong" until a couple months ago when I really started to question my gender.
I've dressed masc from time to time over the years since I came out at nb and I've had days in the past where I've felt like being feminine would make me explode. But, I've never felt like this so constantly and for so long. I don't know if I was ignoring the feelings in the past or if they been accentuated recently.
For example, for senior prom, I wore a dress and for like a couple days leading up to the event I felt like throwing up and throwing the dress away, a feeling I never told anyone about. But I didn't do any of that and I wore that dress to prom and I thought it was a really cute fit but I didn't feel particularly excited or extremely happy to be feminine.
For my graduation ceremony, I cried to my mom about not wanting to wear a dress or a skirt because I hated the idea of looking like a girl for such an event and we ended up going out and buying dress pants for me to wear. I felt much happier wearing pants.
But for so long I've felt so neutral about my body and my gender that I'm like confused now. I never really thought about being a guy before, in fact I've gone through periods of time when I thought I was just a cis woman who didn't like experiencing misogyny and then distanced myself from womanhood but that was definitely wrong. But I've been think about being a guy and I think my life would just be better if everyone perceived me as a guy? So that makes go back to questions because am I guy or do I just want other people to think I'm a guy and treat me like one? is there a distinction?
Idk and I hate not knowing!!! I feel scared that I'm somehow faking it or that if I do anything I'll regret it? ...
idk what to do from here or what else to say. Any advice in general or for next steps would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading all this.
Thanks for reaching out! Talking about gender stuff can be super awkward and weird, so I'm glad you chose to drop me an ask!
You are not alone in being unsure if you're nb or transmasc, or identifying with both at different times in your life. I came out as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns for a couple of years before realizing Im a man and transitioning medically and socially to male.
My best advice to you would be to experiment! Ask your friends to use he/him pronouns, change up your gender expression, and see what makes you feel best. It's super frustrating to not know who/what you are, and I've found the best way to combat that is to fuck around and find out.
Also, if you're going to college in the fall, this could be a great time to try out new expression or a new set of pronouns! Same goes for a new job, moving out, etc. Anytime that you get to be around new people is a great opportunity to share a new name/pronouns without people's preconceptions of you.
My final piece of advice is to remember that there is nothing wrong with changing your mind. You're young, and you've got your whole life to find out who you are and find out what makes you happy. If you identify as male right now but you don't in 10 years, that's okay. I found that I have never regretted the decisions I made in my transition that didn't last forever (old names, pronouns, etc). Everything you're doing has value because it's helping make you happy and comfortable in your own skin.
So change up your pronouns, get an adventurous haircut, try out binding or packing or hormones. You will find what makes you happy. And if it stops making you happy, that's okay! You are allowed (and encouraged!) to change❤️
Don't be afraid to reach out if you need anything or just want to talk. My door is always open
