I don't care is a song that patrick wrote specifically to prove that he didn't have to give a shit about pete's words to turn them into a hit. it's a song seemingly designed to tear pete down at one of the lowest points in his life. "I don't care what you think, as long as it's about me": these are pete's own words, played straight, spit back in his face. patrick has stated outright that he put no love into that song, and that was the point.

and then we have what a catch donnie. a song pete wrote from patrick's point of view to build him up and show him his worth. a song so full of love and tenderness it's bursting with it. a song patrick said nailed how he was feeling so well it made him emotional. a song with a music video that features patrick prominently, rescuing decaydance signees and the rest of the band, and doesn't feature pete at all (but would have featured him going down with the ship).

what I'm saying is this: the nature of a codependent relationship is that yes, you know each other deeply. so much so it can almost feel like you're the same person. you know each other well enough to know exactly what's wrong the other person and what they're feeling. but when you know each other that well, you also know how to hit each other where it hurts the worst.

I keep thinking about pete going down with the ship in the what a catch mv. the longer I think about it the clearer it is to me. it's like a metaphor for pete, instead of fighting back, stepping away and giving patrick the control he so clearly wants.

the whole album is literally called the shared madness of two. pete and patrick, circling each other, building each other up, tearing each other back down, slowly destroying each other (and leaving no room for joe or andy to feel included).
