“I’ve decided that instead of recognizing when im inspired, im going to try to recognize when im not inspired. or rather, when ive become uninspired. im worried that being excited about being inspired places so much value on the act of inspiration that it wills it out of our regular lives. it assumes that inspiration is rare. but inspiration is not and should not be rare. in reality, we are surrounded by inspiration EVERYWHERE. i think that if you look at anything hard enough you can find inspiration in it. the world and our connection to the world is SO AMAZING. there is so much to be inspired by – an infinitude of amazing things are happening all the time. it’s imposible to not be inspired if ur listening to the world properly.

basically i think it’s a false ideal to wait to be inspired. i’d rather recognize being uninspired as the rare event. that way, instead of periods where you are waiting for inspiration, you have periods where you are waiting for uninspiration to pass. inspiration isn’t what’s rare – not being inspired is the outlier.

and the best thing is, being uninspired isnt even a bad thing. everything needs to rest from time to time. i think my key to recognizing when im uninspired is understanding that it is temporary and fleeting. if you recognize the constant humming underlying baseline to your mental output as being in a state of constant inspiration, then being unable to find inspiration for a moment is no longer scary, or worrying, or upsetting. its just a thing that will pass. it’s not forever. being inspired is the forever. uninspiration is just the little break you need in order to take a rest from being inspired all to time. to me, it makes sense to be in a general state of inspiration, and to recognize that i am always inspired. then, when uninspiration strikes (as it will), it doesnt come with anxiety, it comes with peace. and perhaps a little bit of quiet.” -Johnny Sun
