Part of me expanding my personal brand is showing how I am making an impact within my career and area of expertise. For me personally, this would be the teams that I work with on a daily basis. Having the chance to work with the Griffon volleyball team this year is not necessarily something that many outsiders would know about me. To me, this is a team that I made great relationships with and expanded the scope of my focus and my career. Having players post about me and recognize me for my work is always a great feeling, and is something that I would want others to see about me. I believe within my career, one of my strongest skills is my ability to make people feel comfortable and being able to build relationships with them, and I think that this post by some of my players exemplifies that.

Here is an example of a page that I follow on Instagram that could have similarities with what I might want my page to look like. This is an athletic trainer that posts about different sport related exercises and therapies.

I think this is something within my profession that I could also partake in. Not only is this page a way to interact with colleagues in a similar field, it can also help me grow within my own personal practice.

I look at these types of posts for me as a way to show where I am and what I do on a daily basis, and draw attention to my name and skills. Something like this on social media is something I aspire to, to help me in the future.

Being active on Instagram is something that is fairly new to me. It requires a variety of content each day, and that is something that I struggle to keep up with. So far, this isn’t a platform that I have used to promote my public brand, but more so my public brand. In the future I think Instagram would be a great way to advocate for my profession and myself.

For now I am working on getting content out more regularly, and staying involved both with posts and stories. Here is an example of a story I posted this week. Not everybody is fortunate enough to work with a dog every day, so it’s always an easy way to get content out.

Continuing to expand on posts like this would be an easy way to show the world what I do on a daily basis, and bring recognition to myself and my passion towards my career.

Throughout the course of the semester, I have tried to post relevant and useful content to both display my personal brand and draw attention to my profile.

This one example, in particular, is something I believe worked in my favor. This tweet I posted had over 10,000 impressions, which is something I have not ever received. Not only did 10,000 people see it, over 500 people interacted with it and 300 viewed my profile because of it.

This just goes to show how far you can reach on Twitter. Because of one tweet, 10,000 people saw my name and what I do, that might not know me otherwise. The potential implications of this could wind up being very important.

Along with Twitter, I have been trying to update my presence on Facebook as well. Facebook is a place that I have tried to keep more personal, but I also understand that it is something that will be looked at by professionals if I am in the job hunt.

Here is one example of how I have tried to make my Facebook more professional. My team did something that is pretty rare, they made the national tournament for basketball.

Now, I was a part of the journey and I did play a critical role to this team by keeping them healthy for their games. But I don’t want to take a cocky approach publicly. I wanted to promote myself on both a personal and professional level.

This is a great accomplishment not only for the team but for me professionally. I believe this is something that I will be able to continue to grow from and promote myself accordingly, not only in Facebook but across all social media platforms.

On Twitter I have been trying to interact with people who who’ve the same interests as me. Obviously from my last few posts and from my Twitter, a major interest of mine is Griffon sports, specifically basketball.

This passion of mine has led me to follow and interact with people who have similar interests. From my post above, you can see that I have retweeted the Griffon Athletics page and also a local sports broadcaster who covers the games.

This interaction shows that I’m interested in what other people have to say, but it is also a way for me to connect my name with the team. Because of this I have certainly gained followers and have had some interactions from strangers.

This week I updated my Twitter profile to make it a little more relevant to where I’m at now and how I want to display myself.

In my bio, I listed my credentials to show who I am and what I do. I think general people might not know what “LAT, ATC” mean, but people in my field and the industry of athletics know, as to appeal to my target audience. I also listed my current position to bring exposure to the experience I am in the process of gaining. As I stated in my post last week, I am very proud of where I come from and like to bring exposure in any way possible.

I believe that these small changes will better allow people to know who I am from a quick glance at my profile. I can use this to draw more attention to my posts.

One of my passions is my hometown, Omaha.

Nebraska, and Omaha specifically, is often overlooked by high-major schools when it comes to recruiting athletes out of high school. Historically it is easier to recruit on the coasts, or in the south where weather is warm all year round and athletes are able to train the entire year. In my opinion, times are changing and there are great athletes coming out of Nebraska. One of my career objectives to bring recognition to athletes in Omaha and show the country that Nebraskans can compete at the highest level.

That brings me to my tweet this week. Justin Patton is a guy I graduated high school with, we went to Omaha North together. If you aren’t familiar with Nebraska schools, North is quite frequently looked down on because it is considered the “inner-city” school. Not to me though.

Justin did something that is rare to see coming out of the city, and especially to our school. He made it. He has battled obstacles since he was originally drafted in 2017, but he just signed a professional deal with the Houston Rockets.

Like I said, in my future I would like to bring recognition to guys like Justin or people who feel overlooked at all.

So I made this tweet last week. If you aren’t a part of either of the basketball teams at MWSU, this tweet might not make sense to you, or just sound sappy. Both of our basketball teams have been hit hard the last couple months, covid hitting, players/staff having to sit out games, isolation, having to make up cancelled games with little time for rest. All of this on top of being full time students, these last couple weeks haven’t been easy for any of us.

I tweeted this because to my athletes, I wanted them to see that their hard work wasn’t going unnoticed and that they know I am there for them. I want others, like future employers, to see my loyalty to my team and my dedication to my career.

I was surprised with the feedback I got on this tweet. I got 26 likes, 2 comments, and one retweet. The activity that I got was from my players, coaches, players parents, and many more that I don’t know. With the activity function on the tweet, I saw that my tweet had been seen almost 3,400 times and that 120 people had visited my page because of it. On top of this I gained a few more followers.

Your Team Needs an Athletic Trainer

Outside the world of athletics, you might not know who we are or what we do. If you have played a sport, especially at the college level or beyond, it is likely that we have been your saving grace more than once.

So what does an Athletic Trainer do? Probably more than you think. We are not the ones running weight rooms, we are not actually "training" athletes at all.

We are behind the scenes making sure athletes are safe, healthy, and well enough to compete. More times than not, we are the first person the athlete sees when they walk in the building, and the last one to see them on the way out. During practice or competition, we are there too.

Athletic Trainers are the glue that keeps the team together. We are treating injuries. We are treating illnesses. Taking steps to prevent injuries. Helping with mental ilnesses. Talking with coaches, doctors, administration, parents and more. If something is wrong with an athlete, many times we are the ones with the answers.

As I journey through my career as an athletic trainer, I will continue to provide first hand examples of how athletic trainers are impacting lives on a daily basis.
