Jane thankfully was not a lesser being, however, the pun was terrible. “Oh my god. I’m not related to you, not by blood or anything else that can bond me to the terrible punning of John Egbert.”
“You love me.” John winks and starts running to the dorm building, chuckling along the entire way. He does stop if Jane wasn’t keeping up, though. The reason why he sprinted was because he feared physical retaliation.
“I suggest we leave an opening to allow veiwing access for movie watching,” Kanaya said. She thought a moment, then asked if she should bother bringing out a mattress. Her roommate might mind if her mattress was confiscated for the sake of pillow forts, but Meulin wasnt here, and she could always put it back after.
Terezi decided that her skills were best applied in efforts that didn’t require delicacy or fiddling with engineering. “I’m putting myself in charge of transportation of materials! And, while I’m at it, I appoint Kanaya to Minister of Making Sure Shit Is Balancing Right, and John can be Head Engineer. Any protests?” She didn’t wait for an answer before continuing. “Good.”
“Movies while in the comfort and safety of a pillow fort. I like it!” It reminds John of the good old days when he would construct a smaller scale pillow fort while waiting for his dad to come home late at night. He turns to Terezi, but finds that he doesn’t really have an objection to what she said. It all sounded pretty fair to him. “Alright!” He then takes a few pillows and begins constructing the foundation of the walls next to the couch that’s facing the T.V.
“Alright then, construct us something wonderful, pillow architect,” Kanaya said, smirking. She grabbed a pillow from the mess, contemplating who she should nail first. “Shall we?”
Terezi, in the meantime, had been reduced to a fit of giggling as she watched the blurry John-shapes wrestle with the blurry blanket-shapes. It was the height of entertainment. She bent down and gathered up a few blankets in her arms, and looked to John. “Orders, Mr. Grand Fort Architect sir?”
“First, the roof! We’re gonna need pillows on all corners and maybe something heavier to keep it in place. Let’s start with a square foundation right here.” He spreads his arms to gesture to the middle of the room. “Then we let the room guide the progress. Sheets in one space and the pillows on the other. They’re going to be our ammo in this quest to build the best fort possible! Let’s go, team!” He starts organizing the materials this way and that. Movie montage anyone?
Prospit Coffee
Jade had big plans for the school year, and for the rest of her life in general. She’d only been at Alternia Academy for a couple weeks or so, but after hearing about it, she had decided to get a job at Prospit Coffee. She’d done her research on applications as well. She was a star student, and intended on maintaining that status for the rest of her years. Having a job at the age of 15 would look nice on her college resumes, and maybe she’d be able to save up to permanently move to Maine.
Jade walked into the coffee shop holding her resume close to her chest and looking around curiously. She’d only been in a coffee shop a couple times, and the smell was really strong, but it was comforting to her. The altogether environment was very warm with a lot of yellow pieces of furniture here and there. As is the intention of the interior, it really put her nerves at ease. She took a deep breath and looked around for another person occupying the shop, preferably a manager or something.
Another day, another hour working at Prospit Coffee. John really doesn’t have much to complain about, and really the job isn’t half bad for his first time being responsible and getting paid for it! He figured that it was going to be a lot tougher without any other students to work with for a while there, but he, another non-student employee and the owner of the store were able to organize their time in an efficient manner, so John only had to work a few more days of the week after he (hopefully) finished his assignments at school.
He had been promoted to student manager, and with the title change came a slew of things he should keep track of, one of which was answering any questions someone may have about obtaining a job here. There have been few cases where he gave out the information, yet nothing seemed to come of it. “Welcome to Prospit Coffee!” He greeted once he heard the familiar chime of the bell by the door. Thankfully no one was at the register so he could do that- hold the phone. “J.... Jade???”
Terezi went down despite Kanaya’s help, all elbows and knees sticking out. Whoops, sorry John. She managed to get up without any help, though, and blinked in amusement at John’s attempts to get out of the nefarious blanket trap. “Do you need a hand?”
John probably did need assistance, judging by the mass of blankets that had managed to wrap around him multiple times. Kanaya began to assist as well, pulling the blankets off him and setting them aside. She debated folding them, but decided against it. “So,” she said, as they continued to extract John from the blanket disaster, “Who has the best tecnique for a blanket fort?”
The wind was practically knocked out of him once Terezi squished John through the all the pillows and blankets that /she/ had dropped all over him. Muffled wheezing radiated from the soft pile, bits of the fallen dork being revealed over time as he eventually rose out from underneath it, looking disgruntled and needing to readjust his glasses. It was right back to business after shooting a glare at Terezi. “I don’t want to brag or nothing, but I could probably win a record for best blanket fort constructed by a single child.”

Jane scowled and finally stood up, brushing off her skirt and nudging away any of the wiggly little bodies vying for more of her attention. “I’m not tasty enough to be a snack, John. I’m sweet as pie sure, but puppies don’t eat pie. They definitely don’t need it.” She teased, walking over and stepping through the door, locking the pups in by themselves. The poor things cried and Jane wanted to hurry and get out before they got to her once more.
John had released a few new squeaky toys into the pen, ushering all the puppies inside once more before heading out the door before Jane locked him in there, the jerk. He playfully shoves her shoulder with a palm before getting a running start before she gets him in a headlock or something towards the coffee shop front door. “You shouldn’t sell yourself so... short-cake, Jane!” His pun could kill a lesser being with sheer disappointment alone.

Jane winked at her cousin, unable to stop laughing as the puppies’ fussed and tried to lick her face once more. “Oh goodness!” Jane grinned at him, light blue eyes sharp.
John will let Jane have her fun with the puppies. Eventually they’ll have to leave, otherwise the manager of the entire building will have their heads. “If you hang around them too much, Jane, they’ll think you’re like a snack or something!” He snickers and makes wavy ghost fingers at her. Spooky!
Bored
“As true as that may be, Mr. Egbert, I do believe it depends on the thing.” She replied with a smile, nudging him slightly. A part of her hoped her time with John would never end, but she knew it would. “Everything has to come to an end eventually though, doesn’t it? Like music. It may be beautiful and meaningful… But it still ends. Then we find a new song to love.” God, there she goes with her stupid metaphors and deep thoughts. She really needed to stop those!
John wasn’t that into when Rose went into those super spoopy places, since they always made his head hurt. He’d rather have fun with her now rather than think about everything that they were doing too much! “Well, I’ve decided on which movie I’m going to see, and I’m pretty sure you do too. Also, there’s always going back and repeating the same music you love, Rose, so don’t forget that! Are you ready to go to the pet store?” He asked, lightly tugging his friend along.
Terezi bumped into John’s back - she’d been busy being very proud of herself for not stepping on the trailing blankets she’d gathered to watch where she was going. Watching where you’re going is for losers! Which meant, of course, that she knocked her nose straight into John’s spine, and dropped half her blankets and a third of her pillows. “Whoops! Sorry about that,” she went, trying not to fall over.
They were back! Kanaya jumped up to help the two of them, just before Terezi fell. “I’ll grab these,” she said, gathering the pillows and blankets John and Terezi had dropped. “Go ahead and set them down by the couch. We can begin to arrange everything in a minute.”
And John fell over, laying face first on the floor when Terezi bumped into him. At least his landing was soft! He maybe be a little more than buried, though, as he tried worming his way out of the pile that Kanaya was helping to dwindle.
“Hey now, who said anything about against?” Terezi mock-frowned at him, but dropped it quickly in favour of a grin. “I said it was interesting!” she called at his back as he disappeared out the door. “I should get going too - be right back with more materials!” She popped up from her spot on the couch and slipped out the door, leaving Kanaya to do her own preparations. She mentally listed out everything she could remember being in her room, and tried to map out how she was going to get it all to the right room. (Blindly blundering into someone else’s room with a bunch of blankets and pillows would be weird.)
Kanaya walked briskly to her sewing station, all while grinning like an idiot. Lucky for her, she didnt have to leave her dorm at all and risk the confused expressons of anyone who made eye contact with her companions and their mountains of pillows. She gathered all the chairs in the room and placed them near the couch, along with her exess fabric and blankets. Kanaya plopped herself on the now increasingly more comfortable couch, and waited for the others to return.
Okay, maybe John jumped the gunn back there with Terezi. But he could think about that later! For now, he was trying to remember the room he had to go to after getting a mighty stacked pile of pillows and sheets going on. (His roomie won’t need those, right?) There he goes, knocking on Kanaya’s door with his foot just in case the door was closed. Or if it was open, it was used to call for attention. “Some help, please?” The only thing seen from the inside of the room was a pair of legs.
Bored
“And what exactly do you think you’re laughing at?” She asked, quickly turning her attention back to him. “And I know exactly how sequels work, I’m just surprised that there have been so many of them is all. I never truly believe a movie series warrants any more than one sequel to be honest, but obviously the majority believes otherwise.” She replied, raising an eyebrow at his snickering as she let her eyes playfully narrow at him.
“Nothing.~” John quickly recovered, pointing in the general direction of where a certain store to purchase puppy goods would be located. “But I believe that if people love something enough, it should never end.” Like friendships or pranks.

“I’m cute all the time. Are you trying to say I’m ugly John?” Jane asked him, pouting while trying to act all innocent. She set the puppy don to play with his fellows, petting their wagging behinds or scratching at their ears whenever they bumbled past her.
“You’re not ugly, Jane, but I know you’re trying to take advantage of being cute by making me feel guilty about pranking you. It won’t work. I’m immune to your womanly wiles.”

Jane huffed up at him and lightly kicked at his thigh, moving to pick up a puppy and look for some treats. “You’re such a nerd. I expect a better apology than that from you. I am your elder cousin and I deserve respect!” She stomped her foot, scaring the little one in her arms until she cooed and cuddled the little ball of fur she was holding. “Shh, shh, tell Uncle John to stop being such a butt head, oh yes.”
“Oh sure, I’m the butt head.” John really was, but at least he pranked Jane fair and square without much harm done. That’s how all pranks should go. He rubs his thigh and flinches to the counter, acting more hurt than he actually was. “Stop trying to be cute while holding a cute puppy and doing non-cute things.”
Ah, well, Terezi would have probably disapproved of the rule-breaking directly after the novelty had worn off. She did twist her mouth a bit at not being consulted for suggestions, but she didn’t protest audibly - it was just as well, because she didn’t have any suggestions. “Hmm!” she went, in response to John’s idea. “Interesting. Kanaya, thoughts?” She was the host, after all, and should be given the right to argue against a giant fort being raised in her room.
Kanaya was opposed to the idea at first, but this was mostly becsuse she was unsure how her roomate would react. The more she thought about it, she realized that not only was Meulin not there, but she would likely want to join in if she was. “Lets do it.” she said. “ I have some large pieces of cotton I have yet to use, and I am willing to temporarily donate them to the cause.” This was going to be fun!
“Two against one!” John calls out as soon as Kanaya agreed, as if Terezi’s opinion no longer mattered. It probably did if the group as a whole wanted to have fun, though, but it was just the first thing he thought of saying since he was letting the excitment get to him. He hasn’t built a pillow fort in forever, but he has done enough research in his spare time to be knowledgeable enough on the subject. “I’ll be right back.” He gets up from the couch to leave the room and head to his own.

Something fun. Yeah, she’d love to do something fun, but she didn’t have much of a choice of what fun and who to have it with. Maybe Kanaya would be up to something or she could go seek out any other students she may have come across but the closest she would get to fun at the moment would be to study and take care of her job at the bookshop. “Anytime works for me! Just give me a time and we can work something out.”
Huh. He didn’t know whether to feel happy that Meulin had so much free time on her hands or sad, but either way, that meant more time for them to hang out! ‘how about saturday in the morning? does ten o’ clock sound fine by you?’
Even though Kanaya’s guests happened to be sprawled out across her couch, Kanaya’s posture remained perfect. She watched the movie with such focus, it was likely very strange to watch,Terezi’z feet happened to be very close to her face, and yet Kanaya didn’t even notice. It was only when she reached for the popcorn that Terezi’s foot hit her face, but it was only met with a sigh and an eye roll from the hostess. She was probably coming off as a total bore, but what could she do? Break out the shots? Not that she had alcohol anyways, but it would at least make her seem more exiting. Her introvert self was screaming that this was a terrible idea. However, Kanaya still had hope that the evening could turn around. Maybe the others had ideas?
“I wonder how many people have gotten hammered over Twilight drinking games,” she said quietly.
Terezi just barely caught the movement of John’s face in time to decipher it as an eyebrow raise. She raised hers right back - even if she’d read it wrong, an elegant eyebrow could never go wrong. It looked like he wasn’t going to protest her personal space invasion, and she was just contemplating how to enact further siege when Kanaya spoke up. Terezi’s other eyebrow joined its partner, and both of them reached higher heights than she could ever have imagined possible. “Oh? Is that a proposition, Miss Maryam?” She withdrew all her wandering limbs and turned to face the party’s host.
“No not at all!” Kanaya said a little too quickly. “Teenage drinking is terribly irresponsible and a waste of time.” She avoided Terezi’s gaze. “But it seems I am not as good of a hostess as I had anticipated. Any suggestions as to how I can make this party more entertaining will be graciously accepted.” She was a bit afraid of the kind of “party fun” Terezi would suggest, so Kanaya turned to her other guest. “John, any ideas?”
“Hmm...” John hummed mostly to himself, but it was probably loud enough that even Kanaya could hear it. Sleepover ideas that were appropriate for kids their age... “We can create a massive fort in this living room. It’ll probably require more blankets and pillows and maybe heavy textbooks than we already have, but since our rooms are relatively close by I think we can pull it off.”

Jane would call BS on John if she wasn’t so busy avoiding a face full of nasty puppy breath. She groaned and after a few minutes finally broke free, pushing herself up and wiping off her face and arms. “I’m never helping you ever again. I’m telling tour dad.”
“What are you going to tell him? You do know that whatever you say about the prank is going to be matched with a letter sent directly to me about how proud I am. After, of course, it says that I should probably apologize to you. So sorry that I’m such an awesome prankster, Jane!” He giggled, putting the water away once it was safely capped and kneeling down to pet a few of the little doggies.
