Charachters Over Coffee
After spending three nights missing sleep to read Rose’s novel, Kanaya condidered herself to be Rose’s biggest fan. She hadn’t begun to write intense smutty slash fics about the novel yet, but she had designed a few articles of clothing to fit the main charachter. It was probably time to contact Rose, considering she had read the novel twice(and edited it) by now. She retrieved her phone frlm her pocket and began to message the number Rose had given her.
GA: Hello Rose
GA: This Is Kanaya Maryam If You Were Not Aware And I Have Finished Your Novel
GA: Twice Actually But That Does Not Matter
GA: Would You Care To Meet For Coffee Tommorow At Lunch? I Hear Both Derse Coffe And Prospit Coffee Are Quite Amazing But I Have Yet To Try Either So I Will Let You Decide
That was probably more messages than needed. Kanaya sighed and flopped onto her bed as she waited for a reply.
Rose would probably be called crazy for worrying as much as she did about whether or not the reading of her book was going well. It had only been a couple of days, and she didn’t truly expect it to be read and edited for a week at least, perhaps even a month with classes and studying. But when she got those messages from Kanaya, she smiled probably too obviously. She was not known to smile all that much within the school, but the smile she gave off was one similar to those thinking of a crush. Not that Rose had a crush on anyone- no, that was ridiculous! Rose Lalonde, crushing on someone when she had other more important things….
But either way, Rose was happy to see Kanaya contacting her, and even more so when she saw what about. It looked promising, perhaps for more than just her writing…
TT: Hello Kanaya.
TT: I am glad to hear that my novel was good enough you could manage to finish it twice so quickly :)
TT: I’d be glad to meet you for coffee tomorrow! Derse’s coffee is quite nice if you’d like to meet there. I’m sure you’d like it.
Yes. That was the perfect response. She hoped… Was it too formal? She didn’t want to come off as though she was WAY too excited for the invitation, and yet she worried about being excited enough.
When Kanaya read Rose’s reply, she could hardly contain her excitement. In fact, she got her phone taken away due to her excessive rereading of the messages. History class is probably not the best time for that. After retrieving her phone at the end of class, Kanaya replied hastily to the messages, and spent the remaining 3 periods worrying about every possible scenario that could unfold the following day.
After the last class of the day(and dinner) was done, Kanaya made her way to her dorm to start planning her outfit. Something casual, but not too casual. But if it was too fancy, it would look like she was trying too hard. She tore through her closet, throwing sweaters and skirts and dresses on her bed, then began to rearrange them to reveal different options. Finally, she settled on simple, a plain grey sweater, a green scarf, and a skirt. She turned off her phone to prevent further distractions, and started on all that homework she had delayed to read Rose’s novel. She had almost forgotten how inconvenient a crush could be at times.
Rose was probably far too excited for this upcoming date than she should have been. She’d never really had a proper crush before… and now she did! Her classes went smoothly enough - although she probably should have payed attention more, but she could make that up in her homework - and she rushed off to her dorm for basically the entire evening, working through dinner in order to ensure everything was finished.
And no, Rose was not talking about homework. She was talking about date-planning! She had to work out just what to say and how to say it and when the best time to say it is. She couldn’t say the wrong thing out of place, it could ruin the whole thing! So she may or may not have written up one or two (or ten) scripts on scenarios and things that could be said or how things could possibly go. And that was before she even chose her outfit! Outfit was key, especially with someone as fashionable as Kanaya! Though, it was getting late… Rose decided to get some sleep before she passed out at her computer and her roommate yelled at her - again - for acting like an idiot.
When it came time for their date however, Rose ran over the scripts multiple times, her nerves getting the better of her as she tried her best to memorize SOME form of conversation so she wouldn’t mess up like the dork she was trying not to be. She also had to finish picking her perfect outfit: short black skirt, pink-purple tights, and a loose grey shirt with her favourite RL design she’d stitched on herself, her black heeled boots completing the cute-yet-gothic look that contrasted her short blonde hair and pink eyes. It worked for her, and she thought it was nice enough to show she put effort in but she wouldn’t change from her usually norm for another person. (though she had seriously debated it for this person!)
Now it was time to meet Kanaya…
The day of, Kanaya was terrified. It was the first date she had been on in a while, so she was a bit out of practice. Not that she had ever been good at dates to begin with. At lunch, she droped everything she didn’t need off at her dorm and rushed out the door(she had to run back though, forgetting Rose’s novel just wouldnt do). She speed walked all the way to Derse and walked through the doors, a bit out of breth. She got in line to order and hoped to god she was early.
Rose was having trouble calming down - she had to, but her breathing was making it hard to calm down! - and she kept trying to relax as she made her way to the cafe. If she walked in and Kanaya saw her freaking out, well that would be horrible in Rose’s eyes! She couldn’t be seen freaking out- oh god she’s arrived at Derse already! She hadn’t even realized she’d walked that fast. Thankfully she wasn’t too early, but she was early enough. She took a breath to try and steady her nerves before walking in and searching for Kanaya. She saw her further in the cafe and, with another small sigh, hurried over to approach her.
“Hey Kanaya…!” she greeted, waving slightly as she smiled. “I hope you haven’t been waiting long…”
“No, not at all” Kanaya replied with a smile. “My drink is just about done, I will aquire a table so you can order” She grabbed a table, then pulled Rose’s manuscript from her bag and layed it on the table. She couldnt wait to tell Rose everything she thought about it.
She smiled at Kanaya, feeling far too giddy. She got a drink as she gave Kanaya time to settle into her seat and pull out the manuscript. “I’m glad we could get together like this. It’s been a while since I’ve done, well… anything with another person. Let alone something like this.” she commented, her nerves causing her to ramble slightly. What was that even supposed to mean? This was probably nothing more than a nice way for Kanaya to seem less harsh in criticizing her work. Yeah. Totally not a date…
She raised an eyebrow, but said nothing. Kanaya pushed the manuscript towards Rose, then rummaged in her backpack for her sketchbook. She flipped to the page that pertained to the novel, and placed it neatly on top of the manuscript. “I hope you dont mind, but I took the liberty of designing a few things for the protagonist.” She said. She was both terrified and exited to hear Rose’s thoughts on her creations.
She seemed slightly caught off guard by the push of her manuscript as well as the other’s sketchbook. She gave a slight nod, before beginning to look over the ideas and suggestions Kanaya had in said book. As she compared them to the different points in her novel they would work and make things better. As she went, she began smiling and even looking impressed. “Oh wow…. These are really good! And… really well thought out as well. I’m now trusting I made the right decision talking to you.” she commented with a smile. “I don’t mind at all when they look this good!”
A blush spread accross her face. Kanaya was so glad that Rose enjoyed the designs she had come up with, she wasnt exactly sure *how* she should respond. So the obvious solution was to hide behind her coffee cup. “Thanks..” she mumbled awkwardly. But she sat up straight and asked the question that had been on her mind for quite some time now. “So, when are you sending this to a publisher?”
Rose offered Kanaya a confident smile when she watched her hide behind her cup. She couldn’t help but think about how cute Kanaya looked right now. It was super cute, actually… She looked a little surprised at the - albeit obvious - question. “Publisher…? Well….” she begins blushing softly. “I don’t exactly have any connections or know any publishers. Plus, I doubt my stuff would actually get published professionally. It’s nowhere near the standards of some other books…” she replies sheepishly, now taking her own turn to hide behind her coffee.
"I have no doubt that mailing this to a publisher would get it printed. Give yourself more credit, Rose." Kanaya stated firmly. "I believe that getting published at the age you are now would make you more famous, really."
