The Trickstar archetype is a series of LIGHT Fairy monsters used by Skye/Aoi Zaizen in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Vrains anime. While she played the deck, Skye would have a career as an Entertainment Duelist under the moniker of Blue Angel. Appropriately for an Entertainment Duelist, the Trickstar monsters are based on Idols. Additionally, the naming scheme would allude to the deck's play style.
The archetype's members are all named after plants with mildly poisonous properties to humans, which is reflected in the strategy of the deck. The archetype is a burn deck that specializes in dealing small amounts of burn damage, usually 200 LP, in response to the opponent's actions, mimicking how the poison status condition works in many video games.
The archetype's success in the anime and in the TCG would be counter-indicative of each other as, while the deck would have a good level of competitive success in the TCG, Skye Zaizen would lose every duel she had against a recurring character. While female characters in Yu-Gi-Oh! have a long history of terrible writing, this feels particularly insulting given her relevance to the plot.
Trickstar's underperformance in the anime would not be repeated in the TCG, as it would make its presence known as a top contender from release all the way into TOSS format. The deck had capable swarming, allowing it to Link climb very easily, and had decent protection effects as well, giving the monsters some staying power so they could continuously disrupt and burn the opponent.
Trickstar Candina is the Stratos for the deck, adding any Trickstar card from deck to hand on its Normal Summon. Its burn effect is based on the opponent activating Spell/Trap cards. All the Trickstar monsters have, somewhere in their artwork, an image of the plant they are based on. In Candina's case, it is Brugmansia Candida, an incredibly toxic decorative plant.
Trickstar Reincarnation would be used in combination with Droll & Lock Bird to heavily punish the opponent for searching.
Trickstar Holly Angel is the most heavily used Extra Deck monster of the deck, a Link 2 that burns the opponent if a Trickstar is summoned to her Link Arrows. She also provides destruction protection to those monsters, and buffs her ATK stat anytime a Trickstar monster deals damage to the opponent. Her name is also based on the Holly plant, which you can see an image of in both the top left and bottom right corners.
Trickstar Band Sweet Guitar is the archetype's only Fusion monster. It doubles the burn dealt by Trickstar Link monsters, buffs its own ATK, and can recur Trickstar monsters from the GY. She is also based on the bittersweet nightshade plant.
Trickstar Black Catbat was not heavily used in Trickstar strategies, due to her burn being contingent on your own monsters' destruction, but her art is my favorite in the archetype. Her debuff effect would be strong enough to allow for some sparing play, despite her burn being less than ideal. Her name would also come from the black bat flower, also sometimes known as the cat's whiskers flower.
