I'm slightly tempted to try to write a story where a single cat manages to escape that pet store (either because they were in the process of being adopted, or because their cage wasn't locked correctly due to oversight), somehow avoids both the military and radiation, and makes it to a relatively safe place with no life-threatening conditions.

(It wouldn't necessarily be a fix-it, though, because of the trauma and survivor's guilt that poor cat would face every moment of their life. Even with nice humans who loved them and a place that isn't irradiated, the survivor's guilt would still be overwhelming.)

oh!!! thats such an interesting idea, escaping that awful pet shop.... cats can actually break out of cages (like in WaCa) if they know how the locks work as well. cats with thumbs.... the survivors guilt and overwhelming shock of escaping into the city would be so difficult as well... its truly hell on earth out there
