The Tanjil river west branch. One of the prettiest little streams in gippsland. Plenty of runs holding decent pan sized trout. With water less than knee depth it makes for a great place to learn how to fly fish. This is an example of the type of streams that I learnt in a year ago when I first started out chasing trout.

My advice to anyone starting out would be to spend as much time on the water as possible. Get a feel for where the trout are holding and experiment with a many different types of casts as possible. Just practise practise practise.

Good gear makes no significant difference. I started out with a 50 year old reel with the cheapest fly line I could buy on eBay. I bought a $5 rod that I found at a garage sale and caught my first fish with an Adams fly pattern that I had made.

The mighty Thompson river. I remember kayaking down this river as a boy from Bruntons bridge to Cowwarr weir. There are plenty of sections of good Rapids and it used to take us the whole day to get down. One thing that has always remained in my mind though is the large brown trout that I would see cruising in the shallows on the warm afternoons a couple of sets of rapids up from the weir. Ever since I have started fly fishing I have wanted to make a trip up the river to that spot to see if I can fill them into taking a fly. I am hoping I might be able to head up there around my birthday this year. Looks like I have a bit of research to do in the mean time to figure out what they might be likely to be feasting on when I choose to go so that I can hopefully be as prepared as possible. This is what I love about fly fishing though. It's not just a simple matter of chucking any old thing at these trout. I have to put in the hard yards a really but these things out. In the end the reward will definitely be well worth it.

My general day to day trout outfit Cortland 9ft 6wt Pflueger medalist 1494 1/2 with WF6F Extra spool with WF6S Home made landing net 2x old tins used to hold flies One with nymphs and wet flies Other with dries Roll of 5x tippet Bottle of floatant ( not pictured ) Bum bag ( not pictured ) I generally run leaders of 9-11 ft for dries Or 5-6 ft for nymphs and streamers. I find this just gives me better control whilst still not spooking to many fish in the process I carry all of this in a bum bag styled carry bag across my back with my net tucked in between it and my back. No need to attatch it there. Easy access and never gets in my way even when bashing through really rock scrub. All in all a fairly simple kit I think. I plan to buy/ make a better fly box in the future to combine the 2 so that I am able to carry even less. It would be interesting to see what others carry with them when they are out on the water.

Hand made landing net. Made of merbau, blackwood and an old laundry bag I got from work that was to be thrown out. I cut the wood into 1mm strips and laminated them around a mould I made out of scraps. Net was weaved on using some old 25lb mono line. Finished off with a light oil. All in all both an affective and pretty net made from scraps I had laying around. Made for 2 nice afternoons outside. What fishing gear to DIY next?
