get u someone who looks at you the way john brooke looks at meg march
“It tastes like…. You tried…. I’ll eat it. It’s a good attempt. Really.” (John's going to eat the jam okay.)
“oh no, john, don’t!” even she can manage a little laugh about it, now, small as it is. “it’s terrible, and i know it is.” she reaches for the jar to slide it away from him, and bites her lip as she looks down at the contents. “there’s nothing else for it but to get rid of it all, though i hate to think of the waste of all that sugar and fruit...” she sighs as she stands, taking the jar of jam with her. “i think we still have some of that blackberry jam marmee made last season, would you like that instead? and please, john, don’t you say you’re happy with mine just to please me! i can’t stand the thought of you eating it.”
mcssagcinabottlc:
He knew it was improper to address her as such, even more so, — to keep that STOLEN item. Yet he couldn’t help but carry on this theft. Her name on his lips had been everything he might dare to wish for, these little stolen moments in her presence, enough to set his affections ablaze. He had never been one for flirting, he knew what was expected. Yet here he was, doing all his nature could allow. He might not flirt, but that did not mean he didn’t cherish these stolen moments alone in her company, even if they were BOUND to be ever so FLEETING in nature. The tutor knew well enough his own standing && little opportunities, Margaret (Even thinking her name seemed to increase the beat of his heart,) could easily find countless better suitors.
&& While his head knew this, every time her face brightened in a smile, John was lost anew. “I’m sure it will return to you, but I’ll keep an eye out.” The lie fell far easier than it should, && that in itself unsettled him. John shouldn’t have lied, more importantly, he shouldn’t have lied to her. But he needed more time — more time to muster up the needed courage. More time till he could lay himself bare before her.
He had to force his hands away from the pocket where the stolen item was discreetly hidden from its owner. Instead, he busied his hands with picking a few flowers. Staring with a few pink roses his hands moved to other blooms, trying his best to choose those she might prefer.
This gave him a much-needed pause, a chance to hide the heat that her smile had brought upon his cheeks. “Laurie…is well Laurie, he’s a bright young man but he’s easily distracted, especially when he spots his charming neighbours having fun without him. As much as he may test me, that boy has a heart of gold && I’m Lucky to be able to call him my student. “ Looking up, from his self imposed task, he offered up the small bunch. “If he’s ever a bother to you Ladies, you must let me know.” Though he had faith in his student’s goodwill && intentions, seeing more life in the boy now than at any time before his friendship with the March girls.
there is a little disappointment in her eye when he says that he has not seen the glove - - - she had saved her money from the kings to buy them new for laurie’s picnic, and there was still good wear in both of them. but what good was one glove without the other? but it is no stinging disappointment. it does not last. indeed, it fades from her eyes about as quickly as it had come. “thank you,” she says, “that’s very kind of you - - - please do let me know, if you find it! though by now i fear it may be lost forever.” (she does not know how close it is, in truth. how well its location is known.)
still, though failing in her task of finding that missing glove, she does not leave. she lingers on, watching as his hands moved among the blooms of pink roses, then on to others. how can she help but to admire the way his strong hands move through the fragile flowers with such ease and gentleness?
it seemed, she thought, that laurie was not the only one easily distracted - - her own attention had been so easily pulled! but she looks up at him, softly smiling again. “are we very distracting?” she asks. “i apologize, if we have made your teaching harder.” lashes flutter in a blink as she looks at the offered flowers, smile only growing brighter as she looks at them and then up to his face. “oh! are they for me? they’re beautiful - - - i’ve always loved pink roses.” funny enough, her fingers brush his as she takes them, and soon enough there are matching roses in her cheeks. “laurie is never a bother to us,” she says at last, sweetly, looking down at her little bunch of flowers. “it is almost like having a brother.”
Our burdens are here, our road is before us…Now, my little pilgrims, suppose you begin again, not in play, but in earnest, and see how far on you can get before Father comes home
