Did Jesus Ever Say: “I Am God, Worship Me”?
One of the most important questions every Christian should ask is: Did Jesus ever clearly declare that he is God and that people must worship him?
When we examine the Bible, the answer is surprising: there is no single verse where Jesus says “I am God, worship me.” Instead, we find him speaking and acting as a messenger of God.
1. What Jesus Said About Himself
“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
➝ Jesus distinguishes between the only true God and himself as the one sent.
“I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.”
➝ He identifies himself as a messenger, not God.
The Qur’an confirms this truth:
“The Messiah said, ‘O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.’” (Qur’an 5:72)
“He fell with his face to the ground and prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.’”
➝ Jesus prays to God. God does not pray to Himself.
The Qur’an describes the prophets in the same way:
“Indeed, those who are near your Lord are not prevented by arrogance from His worship, and they exalt Him, and to Him they prostrate.
3. Jesus Did Not Know Everything
“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”
➝ If Jesus does not know the Day of Judgment, how can he be God?
In Islam, only God has complete knowledge:
“With Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him.” (Qur’an 6:59)
4. Contradictions to Reflect Upon
Jesus experienced hunger, thirst, and sleep—yet God is free from all needs.
On the cross, he cried: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).
The Qur’an explains clearly:
“The Messiah, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger. ˹Many˺ messengers had ˹come and˺ gone before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They both ate food. See how We make the signs clear to them, yet see how they are deluded ˹from the truth˺” (Qur’an 5:75)
If both Jesus and Mary needed food, how can either be divine?
5. The Islamic Perspective
Islam restores the pure and simple message of Jesus:
He was a prophet, a servant of God, and a bearer of good news.
He performed miracles only by God’s permission.
He called people to worship the One True God.
“Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is the straight path.” (Qur’an 3:51) .
Conclusion: A Call to Reflect
Dear Christian reader, ask yourself:
Did Jesus ever say: “I am God, worship me”?
Or was this belief shaped later by church councils and philosophical debates?
Should we not return to the original, simple faith: worshipping the One God of Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all)?
