Bwah?! There was loud chirping that sounded like bugs, which jerked Schezo into moving quicker after the monster boy, though he still tried to carefully carry the little frog so it was not harmed. He didnât want to hang around any bugs at all and have them almost eat him like before.
That aside, the other seemed almost in his own mindset, diverted from any other thing that happened: until the eyeball spoke, at which point the monster mused that he himself delighted in curses. Yes, it was probably normal for a monster to not have to worry about such things, but he wasnât that sort. âYou do your own thing, but I donât wanna say things that momâd be disappointed in me for sayinâ!â
A firm, small nod there - but the monster then said strange words heâd never heard before. âUhmâŠwhat does that mean?â Perhaps he shouldnât have asked, but it bewildered him - but the spring of water distracted him from that, and the boy carefully leant down at the waterâs edge once he neared it, to allow the frog to go in. Heâd carefully collect some water in a glass, round bottle he had in his robe, too.
âTrue, itâs not your job to clarify things - but thank you for the help you COULD give me so far, ok?â Despite evident confusion, Schezoâs thanks were geniune.
The wolfish glee Kitaro exerted with his double-edged statements dispersed when regardless of his inscrutable behavior, he was given gratitude. It didnât add up in the least, no matter his efforts to search his brain for his feelings on the matter. Rather than balk, he nursed the back of his neck with a pensive rub. This kid just wasnât real.  He couldnât be. What person thanks someone for their merest effort? It was dumb. He didnât do anything. Not even his prodding hints were for anyoneâs interest but his own. It was entertaining, that simple. âN-no...â  Barely voicing his disagreement, Kitaro began to gnaw on the piece of bark in his hand as if it would hide his non-confrontational smile. He didnât even care to remember when he took it, he was so absorbed in whatever pleasant miasma the other was unconsciously giving off. This wasnât the kind of attention he was looking for, initially. Never once had he given his own thanks, and he wasnât about to start now. Who does that? No, not just in general. He wanted a name.   âWho are you?â He asked, doing his best to sound uninterested. His tells were very contradictory, especially his crinkling nose.

ââŠ!!! I canât say bad words like THAT! Momâd be angry at me if I did!â The boy gasped in utter shock, before shaking his head.Â
âDark World is a fitting term anyway, because itâs really got a lot of dark beings and darkness in it. You can call it what you want, thoughâŠ.but huh? A source of water? Thatâd help a lot.â
Then he could collect some for the little kitty from before while he put the frog there, and make sure the kitty was kept happy and healthy. He wanted to help it! It seemed in exchange for being led to a good source of water, the monster wanted his food back, since none of the other monsters would take it. It was a fair enough trade?
He didnât mind agreeing to it, and with a nod of the head, he headed to the forgotten trap and carefully retrieved the bark with chocolate. He wouldnât attempt tasting any, simply walk back once he had it and attempt to hand it to the monster so they could get going.
Whether he was speculating on what heâd been told or thinking again how moronic it was to be so obedient, his expression was empty. Black flecks, invisible in the lacking light, jumped from behind his ear to his risen fingertips. Airing out puffs of his gentle breath, Kitaro created a message through intricate vibrations. The beady parasites flitted on their way, translating on and on until crickets began singing back to him.
Kitaro was not one to waste a perfectly good snack, but when he started to limp in the direction the sounds drew him, his dismissive gaze was almost catatonic. No matter how much he was pressed to respond, he wouldnât until he finally stopped at a natural spring. âKitaro?â  Pulled from his trance by his fatherâs voice, Kitaro released a tranquil sigh. A warm draft continued to grovel along his pores. Other than his healing ankle, the sensation made even his head tingle. âI delight in curses,â He cooed in appeasement, cushioning his cheek with his clasped hands. Evidently he did not mean words, but it was definitely a belated response to Schezoâs vivid reaction. âLa Puce Ă l'oreille.â  Kitaro was deliberately prodding at a flea in the otherâs ear--an expression heâd familiarized himself with in his attempts to learn French and impress his would-be girlfriend. Medama-Oyaji would gag if he was not so thrilled himself. The cryptic layers of his sonâs words meant he had detected something! His son was never good at sensing hexes or other demons. He was beginning to worry that the boy was a late bloomer.
âUnless you see it for what it is, I suppose youâre correct. Itâs not my business to enlighten you.â

Shaking off his jitters with a small shake of the head, Schezo attempted to gently pick up the small frog that had been responsible for that startling - it would be bad if someone stepped on the frog by accident, so heâd hold it until he could find somewhere frogs liked to put it. âI wonder if thereâs any ponds or something frogs like near here - the Dark World has even more turns than Iâm used to, and all my efforts to even try mapping it out have kinda been ruined because of all the new stuffâŠâ
Sighing at that, Schezo was glad to see the long bread was big enough for them both to share, at least! That was one positive out of the situation currently. While enjoying the food, the other noted he despite being more brave than other humans, he was an open book.
âIâve been in the Dark World - which has lots of different monsters - a while, so Iâm kinda used to it. The way I see it, anyway - I should try to not be scared by monsters, because then the ones that actually try to hurt me could use that to advantage, which would be bad. I want to keep myself from being hurt, after all! That said, yeahâŠIâm not really good at hiding things from others yet. I probably need to work on that to protect myself better, right?â
Well, that did explain why Schezo in the future put on a front of âhammy behaviorâ, because it was his method - other than closing himself off - of protecting himself against the Dark Worldâs monsters who would take advantage of it.
That saidâŠ.the other HAD bugs? Not only that, but was brave enough to befriend them?
âYouâre a lot braver than me, goshâŠbugs spook me too much after so many almost ate me in the Dark World.â
A shake of the head in somewhat awe, there.
Changing the savoir-faire of others was not a concern of Kitaroâs; nor was it ever an intention of his to give advice. The notion that one could keep themselves safe with a mask was utterly ridiculous, almost as much as his own half-compliment handed right back to him. Masks were merely tools to reshape and confuse oneâs perception of another.  Gods, this boy was so nice it was stupid. Holding his piece on the subject out of courteousness, Kitaro instead opened his maw wide and shoved as much of the comestible sustenance into his mouth as he could fit.  Brave was one way to put it. Medama-Oyaji saw it as wasteful. A young immortal such as his son just didnât understand the weight of his own life, even after brushing up close and personal with death countless times. His striped vest was woven to represent the valor of their tribe, but that couldnât teach him what fights he shouldnât pick.   âJust call it Hell like the rest of us,â The smaller boy muffled between bites. He had never heard of this sector, but he was enough of a local to understand that there were many hells in Jigoku. Licking crumbs from his lips, Kitaro finally rose to his feet, although he favored one side. âYouâve been rambling about it for so long, but I donât care enough to correct you. However bored I am of debts, youâve compensated enough for breaking my ankle. I will excuse you for abruptly waking me just this once and lead you to a source of water.â
âCome, and do not forget my chocolate over there.â Pointing with a thick lock of his hair in the general direction of his forgotten trap, Kitaro folded his arms behind his hunched back and waited.  He held no qualms with bossing the kid around whatsoever. With darkness shrouding the maze so thoroughly, he would be none the wiser if Schezo snuck a taste of it.Â

Schezo noted that the eyeball that had appeared was unknowing of the actual reason the other had not simply eaten his own food - well, he supposed perhaps only the monster boy himself knew the reasons why, but at least heâd asked a good question that made sense, right? Anyways, that aside - the sheer length and shape of the bread surprised even the other, which was sure relatable.
âI know, itâs a surprise to see how big the bread is, right? So amazing!â Nodding in energetic enthusiasm, the bread was accepted by the other - butâŠwhy was he laughing too? Did he also find the long bread funny? He thought he laughed dramatically, but this laugh put even his practiced laughter to shame, cackling in an erratic way.
Hair moved away from the otherâs face, though it was hard to see even with Schezoâs candlelight - and then, the voice warped and a object flew from the darkness! W-was it a spider?! Of all things, he feared bugs the most, because of several bug monsters of the Dark World almost ending him: so his first instinct was to fling his arms up to try and shield his face because he didnât want ANY bug nowhere near there!!
He felt a small object swat against his arm while his hands were there - he didnât want to look, really, but he had to see how quickly he should be flicking the bug offâŠ.only to see a frog instead.
âJ-jeezâŠI thought that was an awful bug. Frogs are nice, though, they eat bugs, so I like them. Theyâre cute. I know itâs probably your job to spook people, but really big awful bugs almost hurt me a few times - they really, REALLY spook me out, so donât throw any bugs, ok?âÂ
At least Schezoâs honest about what actually scares him, but outright saying it might not be the smartest of things.
In the midst of the commotion, Medama Oyaji clambered up onto the top of Kitaroâs head. His convulsing laughter made it challenging for the little one not to fall. He knew from experience which spots provided the best vantage while he graced the food Kitaro portioned for him.  Kitaroâs father only ever used his mouth to eat. It was much less disturbing if others did not see his fangs. Receding from his own devious crowing, Kitaro too began to pop pieces of bread in his mouth. Perhaps it would be for the best that he did not mention his previous intentions for that frog. Even if it was tiny, it would have been the perfect snack for his father.  No matter, for it had provided ample entertainment in life. Kitaro chewed, communicating his felicity with the offering but definitely providing no wordy reply. However, the amphibian below was also singing itâs own praises. No doubt, this was gratitude for the phantomâs mercy.Â
âEh? For a kid more brave than most humans, youâre still an open book,â Kitaro noted, this time in a mock-whimper that was suspiciously heartfelt in itâs discomfort. âThrowing insects around does not seem civil to me. It would be awfully rude. What if they think I donât like them? Itâs not my fault if they decide to find a new host after a little...conversation.â  Despite his willingness to provide shelter to the little cooties, he didnât have the self-control not to scrape his fingers under his arm in retaliation.

Schezo, of course - had no idea that this was not the Dark World, thus all itâs inhabitants were not necessarily all âmonstersâ as the Dark World held: the reality being heâd prefer to believe that this was a world he knew than a confusing truth. Of course, that was a fact that would remain unknown for the time being, as the boy did not speak it aloud. What he did know, was that despite bread being not the fanciest meal: it was evidently enough to catch interest, with the monster sitting up.
Oh? There was a talking eyeball popping out from the monsterâs pockets: Schezo had seen stranger monsters, and more frightening things, so even at that odd sight the boy did not falter, instead nodding thoughtfully at the point it made. âThatâs fair enough: but if heâs that hungry, he could wash the bark anâ stuff off the human food in the trap and use that to bide him over? It seems like itâd be better an idea to give some extra energy than expecting monsters to eat bark, anyway.â
That said, Schezo moved around in his robe pockets - and the scent of freshly-baked bread filled the air. (Luckily, Schezo had gotten that bread before he changed to this younger point of time, not that he knew where it hailed from.) A very long baguette. âIâm not hungry, so you can have the whole long bread. I just like it because itâs a funny shape, mwe he hee!âÂ
Giggles aside at the comical shape of the bread, he would willingly hold it out to the awaiting hand.
The eyeball had clammed up, truly uncertain of how to answer. His boy generally had baffling reasons for everything he did. Even his kin didnât know all of his secrets, but the diminutive adult at least had suspicions. Quietly, the single father witnessed Kitaroâs mouth part in wonder at the size of the staff of life. The price of rolls increased every day where he once derived. To adapt to the postwar climate, he sat on rations of one roll a day.  Acquiring it with his own two hands was a dream come true. What could he say? He was an ungrateful boy, so giving thanks wouldnât do at all. The lighthearted titter that followed enticed the upheaval of Kitaroâs shoulders, inciting him to consider what was so funny. He wasnât sure whether he was moved by the otherâs generosity or impartial anyway. Gradually tucking the baguette under his arm, the pipe dreamer lashed out in his own share of humor. His errant cackles were unpleasant on the ears, every ring of it resembling that of a lumpy old witch.  Brushing strands of his fringe away from his clenched eye, Kitaro spluttered between his fractured laughs. âI did not eat it because--â Though difficult to witness it in the dark, his eyelids unfurled. The hollow socket was perfectly capable of gaping open and wasnât sealed in the slightest.Â
â--I prefer to prepare my meals with a taste of mischief!â He declared, his voice warping ominously. The dull sound of it was harmonious and manifold with other grown men, and it scared the puny frog out of its prison. No bigger than a fingernail, it leaped for Schezoâs face.  âAhahahahahaha! Kihihihihi heehee!â
