things nobody tells you about fake hip hop jewelry until you've already been burned
POST TITLE: (a guide)
okay so i've watched enough people get scammed buying "real gold" chains online that i need to make this post exist in the world
this is going to teach you how to tell immediately whether your hip hop jewelry is real or not and also how to never get fooled again
let's go:
🔍 THE HALLMARK RULE (this one is non-negotiable)
every single piece of real gold has a stamp 10K, 14K, 18K or the european equivalents: 417, 585, 750
no stamp = not gold
it will be in the clasp, on the back of the pendant bail, inside the ring band, somewhere. real gold always marks itself because the law requires it.
if you can't find the stamp your "14K gold" piece is not 14K gold. i'm sorry.
🧲 THE MAGNET TEST (do this before you buy anything)
real gold: not magnetic. zero attraction. real diamonds: not magnetic. zero attraction. real moissanite: not magnetic. zero attraction.
brass, iron, steel (the base metals in fake pieces): magnetic.
a $5 strong magnet from the hardware store is the fastest authenticity test that exists. the number of "gold" chains that will embarrassingly stick to it is genuinely upsetting
💨 THE FOG TEST (for the stones specifically)
breathe on the stones like you're fogging a mirror
real diamond or moissanite: fog disappears in 1-2 seconds cubic zirconia or glass: fog stays for 4-5+ seconds
this works because real stones conduct heat efficiently and clear the fog fast. CZ and glass don't. you can do this test in a store right now and nobody can stop you.
🌊 THE WATER TEST (for gold)
drop the piece in water. real gold is dense — it sinks immediately and cleanly.
also: real gold doesn't react with water. if you see any color coming off in the water, any discoloration at all, that's plating dissolving. that is your answer.
🚩 RED FLAGS IN LISTINGS (screenshot this)
→ "gold-tone" instead of 14K/18K gold → "VVS-style" or "diamond-look" (this means CZ or glass) → prices that are mathematically impossible (a real 14K gold Cuban link cannot exist for $89) → no return policy → product photos that look AI-enhanced or don't show real detail → reviews posted all on the same day or all using the same phrases
ALSO can we talk about the moissanite thing real quick
moissanite is REAL. it's a real gemstone. it came from a meteorite. it actually sparkles more than diamond because its refractive index is higher.
calling moissanite fake is like calling an emerald fake because it's not a ruby. they're different stones.
the fake stones are CZ (cubic zirconia) and glass — not moissanite. if a brand uses moissanite and tells you they use moissanite, that brand is being honest with you. that's the whole point.
