With tensions soaring especially high after the latest strings of bobcat related deaths, concerningly heightened coyote activity was just another straw on Birch Guild's back. Troutwhisper, still shaken by the fate of Meriall's patrol and his own helplessness in protecting his guildmates' lives, puts everything he has into his work as a sentry. He eats and sleeps only as much as is necessary to keep himself on the move: filling in patrols where needed, scratching and re-scratching trees along the outsider border, continuing his training with like-minded individuals whenever there's a free moment. Despite working himself to the bone, however, his focus remains on the welfare of his guildmates beyond just physically protecting them. He stays cheerful, going out of his way to lighten others' days with jokes or snacks or offering to take over some of their duties so they can rest, even occasionally bringing back little seashells or sparkly rocks he finds on patrols to the dens. Only during the moments he's alone or knows no one is looking does he allow the exhaustion to settle in and show on his face.

Pikewarren has had enough of winter and its deaths and losing more herbs every year. The lack of a proper spring was the last straw for him; he needed to do something about it before he lost his mind. To the other four guilds he went, spending one day in each, visiting their keepers or shamans to ask about their own stores and herb gardens. In their territories he hunted tirelessly for signs of herb life, digging through dirt and snow, focusing under trees and withered ferns and anywhere else that may have sheltered something beneath it. But most importantly, he sought ways to improve the gardening systems of each guild - that wasn't Alder, at least, he admired how well kept together the shamans were in their work - and increase the chances of more herbs surviving through a similarly tough cold season next year.
