How to Pull an All-Nighter

Now, staying up all night to study for an exam is absolutely NOT RECOMMENDED. But we get it. Procrastination gets to us all, and you find yourself with no choice. (We should know, we’ve been there often enough)! So, we’ve put together ten tips to help you pull an all-nighter and ace that test.

You promised to start studying the day your exam time-table was released. But that was your birthday week. How could you spend it with your books? There were also those mock tests at your online tuition classes, you said you’d take, but we get it. How could you miss the season finale of your favourite show? And to prep for it, of course, you had to rewatch the season. Now that you’ve watched it thrice, how can you not discuss that ending with your friends? The exams inch closer and the excuses get worse. And suddenly, you have one day to do it all.

1. Have a plan.

You have a lot to do, and very little time to do it. Make sure you have a game plan. Outline all the tasks you need to do, and how much time you want to spend on each one. As far as possible, stick to the schedule, but don’t get hassled when all doesn’t go to plan. This way, you won’t spend too much time on decisions later. 

2. Take a nap when you get home from school. 

Remember, you’re going to be working all night, so it’s important to get some rest. Taking a nap in the evening will help you stay awake at bedtime. Set your alarm according to the kind of task you need to complete. A 20-minute power nap boosts your concentration and motor skills whereas a 45-minute nap will give you more energy and aid creative thinking. And clear your mind and boost your memory, you should nap for 90 minutes.

3. Get your room ready. 

Your environment plays a huge role in keeping you alert. A dull room will make you feel drowsy in no time. Make sure you’ve got all your lights on, and increase the brightness of your laptop screen. If it doesn’t distract you, play upbeat music or energizing classical music while you study.

4. Snack smart.

Understand that you will feel drowsy at some point. You need some reinforcements to keep you going. This is not the time to eat a four-course meal - you’ll be in slumberland in no time. Light healthy snacks like fruits and nuts are your best bet. As tempting as a piece of chocolate may seem, stay away from sugar. The energy ‘rush’ lasts a short while, and you’ll feel sluggish soon after. And don’t overdo the caffeine. Tea and coffee are diuretics. They dehydrate your body and leave you feeling tired the next day. Forget the coffee; go for an apple instead. And remember, water is your best friend.

5. Start with the hardest chapter. 

If you find a certain topic challenging, tackle it first. It will require the most time and energy, so it’s best to get it out of the way when you’re fresh and alert.

6. Don’t spend too much time on the details. 

You’ll be writing an exam in a few hours, so this is not the time to worry about every little date and formula in your textbook. You don’t have to reproduce the textbook, word for word in your paper. Instead, try and get a global sense of the topic or chapter and focus on the most important points. At times like these, chapter summaries are godsends.

7. Get moving. 

It’s exam time. Even the paint chipping away on your ceiling will seem more interesting than your books. A short break will keep you from dozing off. To keep sleep away, take a short walk, do some light exercises, or switch up your study location from time to time. You’ll stay alert for longer and work more efficiently.

8. Wash your face.

If you absolutely can’t keep your eyes open, go old-school. There’s nothing like a spray of cold water on your face to wake you up. Oh, and don’t forget to take a shower in the morning.

9. Don’t skip breakfast.

So, you’ve stayed up and you’ve studied all you could. But the hard part’s still coming up. After a sleepless night, you need the energy to crack that exam. Eat a filling breakfast of complex carbs and protein. Brown bread, eggs, fruit, and milk should do the trick. Avoid fats, as they take a long time to digest.

10. Recover. Don’t Repeat.

You did it! Well done! Once you’ve got the exam out of the way, make sure you catch up on some sleep. Turn in early at night, or take a long nap. And remember, don’t make a habit of it. Just because you did it once doesn’t mean you should do it again.

It’s Time for TIME MANAGEMENT

Varun In grade 9, got scolded today again, thrice this week! from tuition class teachers as he was late in the class due to running from one to another. Poor fellow was sad and clueless for any 9th class ncert maths solution, in spite of being so sincere!  Many a time, children studying in higher grades are burdened with study pressures and managing around to one class from another often develop an unhealthy attitude towards punctuality habits which forms a crucial behavioural remark in future career path. Let's stick to those 7 magic trick rules which smoothes study life just perfect as icing on your favorite piece of cake!!

1) Register the time schedule for the whole day to start preparing from scratch till end, like figuring out what time taken to travel to and fro or small details as snack breaks and time available after all that “ tv or mobile” daily routines counted!.

2) One can set mobile alarms or talk about it in advance to a house member or close friend on chat which helps as an additional reminder!

3) Homework given should be completed that day itself or the following day to save that sweet little brain of unnecessary pending work pressures! At least, the next day, the time of its execution must be set if minimum. One who finishes it in between school’s boring time of the day is the smartest of all!

4) Avoid unnecessary late nights, of course one can pamper himself for a couple of nights in a week as a treat/self reward!  Instead of late night study and getting tired the next day morning, isn't it wise enough to go for early morning studies as refreshing ones?

5) Break-Time should not be taken after lunch or snack or dinner. Preheating and post-eating periods should be engaged in study time.  Breaks can be in the middle of them with half the proportion of what one studied before. You can increase breaktime by increasing your pre-study time limit!

6) Exam portions can be broken into convenient stages and planned into different proportions small or big according to available time and mood mindset. But there is a need to constantly check and update your plan according to previous targets achieved.

7) Once a week any hobby or new learnings of your passion or entertainment or leisure time with friends or family is a must! This will double your output result!
