Gone to find a place for us to hide (Doreah Jones and Serra Frey; September 14)
"I do, I love it to bits," she says. She knows it must seem strange that a simple secretarial job could make her so happy, but she doesn’t think that adding ‘it’s a step up from prostitution’ is a very good idea. At all: she doesn’t want Serra to hate her.
"Yeah, yeah - I’m a born Londoner," she confirms, nodding her head. When she’s asked what she does for fun, she bites her lip for a few moments. “I don’t really do a lot, honestly. I usually just read," she admits, shrugging. It’s what you do when you don’t have many friends; read. “Although I know of a few nightclubs" - she’s had to take a few of the customers who paid a lot to them, before she fucked them - “and there’s a really nice coffee shop just down the road from where I live. Those are pretty much the only places I go."
Serra smiles back. She can't really imagine that being a secretary would be anything close to interesting, but Doreah seems so honestly excited about it and that joy is infectious. "I suppose you must like it then. That's good. I'm glad."
And she is glad, honestly so. It's nice to see somebody with a bit of joy around, there's so little of that lately. Everyone's so gloomy, Serra knows that she is a bit as well, and someone so honestly glad, for something as simple as a job, is a wonderful thing. She must have been unemployed, Serra thinks, to be so thankful for a job. There's a lot of unemployment going around lately as well. Serra thinks she should be more happy as well, to have a steady job.
"I was amazed the first time I came to London. It's the biggest city I've ever been to. Not a big traveller, me." She leans back in the seat, still smiling, her mind wandering. "I was nine and it was the most intimidating place in the world. Didn't come back until college. Living here full time the magic sort of wears off. But that's fine. I like it a lot." She focuses her attention back toward Doreah. "I like to read too. Lived in the library when I was a teenager. That and the pool and the track. Except when my sister would drag me out and make me do things with her."
She's surprised. She didn't take Doreah as...intellectual, at first, but people can surprise her, she thinks. "I've found a few bars, just visiting mostly. I've gone back to one in particular that I like a bit." She tilts her head to the side. "That coffee shop sounds nice. Bit addicted to caffeine myself." She motions down to her cup. "Clearly." She wonders if it would be a bit foreword to ask for Doreah's number, and resists doing so. "I've just started using this train. Are you on here often?" Probably not, since she just got her job recently, but maybe she will be on there often. Serra thinks it'd be nice to ride to work with someone.
