Faye Wong to release duet as tribute to Teresa Teng
Chinese pop diva Faye Wong is set to release a special duet on Friday to mark the 20th death anniversary of Teresa Teng, one of the most influential Chinese singers of the 20th century.
The song Qing Ping Diao - based on Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai’s poem of the same name - was composed, in the early 1990s. Teng had only recorded half of the song at the time as a demo, and was never able to complete an official version.
In 2013, during a concert in Beijing, Faye Wong performed the song along with Teng’s recording as a duet. Two years later, the diva decided to re-compose it and produce an official studio version. Wong is expected to release the song on Friday evening, as a tribute to Teng.
Although the two women never met each other, Wong considers Teng as her musical inspiration. Her studio told the media that all the profits from the song will be donated to charity.
Born in 1953 in a small village in Taiwan, Teresa Teng rose to fame in the 1970s and 80s in China, Japan and Indonesia. She was best known for her folk songs and romantic ballads, such as “The Moon Represents My Heart”, “I Only Care about You” and “Tian Mi Mi”.
In 1995, Teng died suddenly during a holiday in Chiang Mai, Thailand, after suffering a severe asthma attack. Even though it’s been two decades since she passed, her music and legacy are still deeply cherished by faithful fans.
