I said that I moved here 3 years ago to emphasize that I was literally SIXTEEN when I decided to attend college in America. Yeah, a German born 16-year-old from Italy isn't going to be well versed in American politics and history. Had I known now about the U.S. being a pedophile protecting, billionaire championing, Zionist-genocide state, NO, I wouldn't have moved to America. Had I been able to predict Trump's reelection and that America would become a fascist state, NO, I wouldn't have moved to America. Hindsight is 20/20.

OP sent a random, out of the blue, intentionally provokativ ask in order to make me feel guilt for a decision I made when I was an actual child. I fucking hate America as much as any other good socialist, but having spent more than $80,000, I'm literally stuck here until I get my degrees.

Long rant addressed to the reenactment community. I've been in this hobby for years, and I'm so dismayed with the culture.

I don't know why we have this borderline "don't ask, don't tell" policy about our politics in the reenactment community. I don't know why we prance around and pretend like moral education is so detached from historical preservation. How can you wear your 101st uniform and say that you're "committed to preserving the historical legacies of those who fought" when you won't condemn genocide, unjust war, or fascism.

I love my fellow German reenactors, but I don't know why every German reenactor has to preface their involvement in the hobby with the statement "dedicated to the preservation of history; not political..." Wtf do you mean you're not political? You're going to wear a Nazi uniform and say that you're not doing it for politics? You better be educating the public about the political ideology behind that uniform. You better be explaining how propaganda normalized fascism and how authoritarianism took hold. You better be talking about the Wehrmacht's role in the Nazi war effort and its participation in war crimes. You better be wearing that uniform to teach why fascism, genocide, and aggressive war must be condemned, not to separate those things from the history you're portraying. It is so cringe when I meet other German reenactors who "aren't political". So you're just wearing a Nazi uniform because you want to look cool then? What the fuck are you doing here.

What happens when we shy away from politics in reenactment? What happens when we establish reenactment as a "politics free" zone? We get neo-Nazis in this hobby. Neo-Nazis who see all the guns and glory of Nazi paraphernalia and think that this is their opportunity to larp as a fuckass Aryan supersoldier. They think that just because we're "apolitical", it means that they can be in our units as long as they don't talk about their politics. No. We shouldn't have neo-Nazis in this hobby AT ALL. If there are Neo-Nazis being attracted to your group, that is a moral and educational failing on your part, and you fucking suck at "historical preservation".

So how do you keep Neo-Nazis out of reenactment? BE POLITICAL. Make it clear that you are anti-fascist. That you hate Nazis. It is literally that Hinge meme. That anyone who selects the "apolitical" tag is either A. severely uneducated or B. Hitler reincarnated but can't talk about it.

If your reaction to reenactment becoming political is "that will divide the reenactment community": WHY is that a bad thing? That is a good thing. We shouldn't allow this hobby to be filled with fascist sympathizers, war hawks, or advocates of genocide. If this destroys the reenactment community, then the reenactment community was built on tolerating hateful and prejudicial ideologies and never deserved to exist in the first place.

If your reaction to reenactment becoming political is "that it will distract from the main goal of historical preservation"... No, it won't. Historical preservation is inherently political. It is political in what histories we choose to represent. It is political in who we allow to represent them. There is no such thing as being "apolitical" in this hobby. When you choose to avoid talking about politics, that is political. If our main goal is historical preservation, of preserving the legacies of those who fought for us, then we have to be political.

Do you headcanon Austria to be in the resistance like Germany and Prussia? I've seen you make art of him and Germany together in the same uniform, so I'm just curious. Love your art btw! (˶˃ᆺ˂˶)

Thank you sm! XD And no, I don't see Austria joining the resistance. Absolutely not because he supports Anschluß or National Socialism, but because I hc him to have spent the Nazi era being a geeked up pervitin-tweaker who was never lucid. So while Germany and Prussia were blowing up trains and sniping Nazis, Austria was overdosing on German cocaine.

In a way, his incompetence as a military officer can be interpreted as non-complicity.

He also earned two Iron Crosses for his bravery in battle, but only because he would repeatedly charge into enemy trenches hoping to be shot so he could be treated with meth.
