are all classes at UCSB a lecture and a section or is that just typical for freshman courses? in other words, does every single class have a section in addition to a lecture or are there any classes with just a "section"? thanks for your help
There are classes with section and classes without section, but never just a section.
is it worthwhile to have a printer in the dorm?
yes, but they provide printers at the dorm front desk. but they dont always work
which do you prefer- gym or dorm showers? (a female's POV would be nice haha)
dorm
Are the water taps in the dorms filtered or do I have to bring a bottle with a filter in it?
They have filter systems to fill up your water.
would you recommend using a computer or paper for taking notes for class?
You will be more engaged with paper notes. There’s science behind it. But I always ignore science.
hi there! so this may seem like a silly question. say there's a guy that starts grinding on you and you don't like it...how do you politely tell him to "fuck off"? i don't wanna cause a scene or anything like that, ya know?
“Hey, I’m not really into this. Sorry.”
Is it weird to bring a backpack to orientation.
no
can i make it from Buchanan Hall to Embarcadero in 10 min walking?
You’re gonna be cutting it VERY close. Maybe invest in a scooter, at the least.
Do you think we should choose classes bassed on the class or the professor? Like if the professor sucks but the class material is rly interesting should we still take the class?
I think that’s a case by case situation where you just have tho weight out the pros and cons. Usually, I will take classes I find interesting, no matter the teacher. BUT, if I’m required to take a class, I’m always looking for the easiest option.
how do we sign up for classes every quarter? like i know how to do it online using Gold but do guidance counselors help us? (i.e. make sure we're on track for our major and GE requirements)
NOPE. You are all on your own. It seems difficult at first, but it will get easier to figure out. However, you can schedule appointments with counselors.
should i know what classes i want to take before i go orientation or will they help me pick? if not, what general classes should i look into as a freshman for l&s?
they are going to help you out! They are good at what they do!
what should i take to orientation?
A computer. Maybe a pen. clothing. a reusable water bottle.
what is it like having section the same day as lecture?
Just like any normal day. It's nice to have info fresh in your mind. But it's not a big deal if it's on a different day. Half the time time, sections don't run along lectures in perfect symmetry.
Hi - I was wondering about move in. It says they assign a time to move in, but if you don't have class until Thursday why move in Saturday. Is there any don't miss events? Could I just move on Wednesday?
*See below*
im an incoming freshman and i want to know if there is a link where i could see descriptions of the classes i have to pick from, especially for my ge's, i've been trying to look all over but i haven't found anything and i'm confused :(
https://my.sa.ucsb.edu/gold/Login.aspx. Then go to “Find Courses” in the Left Hand Bar. GE’s depend on your college (letters and science, creative studies, engineering, etc.) Look in those areas for some info.
Hi - if classes don't start until Thursday, why move in on Saturday? Books, parties?
There are a bunch of cool week of welcome events. Free concerts, informational programs, pertinent mandatory meetings with your Resident Assistant. This is the best time to ask questions and begin socializing with people. Also, may not pertain to you, Greek events such as Rush are during that week. Overall, it helps you get in the groove before you start booking it.
