Limiting the expansion, and ultimate ubiquity, of the Internet of Things has been the cost, power and size of the enabling electronics – all things that have been addressed by a new fabrication method for tiny, thin-film electronic circuits.
The Internet of Things promises convenience, marked improvements in efficiencies, and huge economic benefits, but for such visions to be realized the number of physical devices being integrated with the digital world needs to continue increasing. But limiting the expansion, and ultimate ubiquity, of this technology has been the cost, power and size of the enabling electronics – all things that have been addressed by a new fabrication method. Researchers at Purdue University and the University of Virginia are just the latest to take on the challenge of getting physical objects connected to the IoT cheaper and easier. To this end, they’ve developed a new ultra-thin circuit fabrication method that promises to bring the IoT to pretty much any object you can slap a label onto. The process behind these peelable electronic circuits not only eliminates a number of manufacturing steps, thereby reducing cost, but it also means almost any object can act as a sensor or be controlled via the application of high-tech decals.

SIEGE OF YRE
This thing is about 44″ by 17″ in realsize, please for the love of god go see it on the main site (or you can click here). In comic terms it’s a 4 page spread. It is easily more than 100+ hours of work and 4 weeks of time. I was inspired by the famous screen painting ‘The Siege of Osaka’. Hope you enjoy poring it over!
ADHD And The Long Ride Home . Wanted to do something for Mental Health Awareness Month but it’s been difficult setting aside a moment to write something that isn’t half-assed and ill-conceived. Also, ADHD isn’t something you traditionally think of when considering mental health. However, the more I read how ADHD presents itself, I’ve discovered it affects virtually everything in my life, and has been for as long as I’ve been alive. ——— For this post, I’ll focus (heh) on an aspect of my ADHD through an image. I shot this on my “Long Way Home” ride after a ridiculously tough day at the shop. This ride, aside from the obvious athletic benefit, is my reset after the week and before the next. I desperately need this disconnect because my ADHD locks my brain at 11 the entire day. The misconception about ADHD is that it’s simply a problem with paying attention, the “shiny object” syndrome. However, for many, it’s more of a problem with filtering out everything being thrown at you. Each time the door opens at the shop I have to prepare myself for the onslaught. I absorb everything about the interaction: how did they open the door, what are they dressed like, how did they react to my greeting, what’s their attitude, why are they walking like that, why can’t they just shut the door, holy shit that’s a piece of shit bike, holy shit that’s an amazing bike, holy shit another fucking hybrid, do they know snot is dripping from their nose, what’s that smell, what are they saying, why can’t they understand what I’m saying, why am I saying this the way I’m saying it… You get the point. Most when presented with all these elements merely file them away and navigate through the interaction. For me, every single nuance is screaming for attention, all at once. Now, I’ve been doing this for a long time, so I can manage to a point. But after an extremely busy day, much like many Sundays are, I’m mentally and physically exhausted afterwards. ——— The ride home reset is… (cont’d in comments) (at Four Mile Run)
