The Monster of the East and the Monster of the West: Trauma, Language, and the Symbolic Order in Naoki Urasawa’s Monster
Here’s my fifteen page artist’s statement/analysis of Monster through a Structuralist/Post-Structuralist lens. Basically I focused on trauma and the role which language and naming play in comprehending such experiences in Monster. I also briefly examine Top of the Lake, and there’s a brief overview of censorship in comic books and manga.
The formatting for the poetry is a pain to translate to tumblr, so I’ll post it later when I have more time.
The works cited needs a few corrections but it’s pretty accurate. It’s hard to cite artistic influences so I mostly only cite Lacan and Monster itself here.
