6 months on a boatyard. Our daymare on the boatyard in Carriacou.
Carriacou, the Grenada's Sister Island. The hurricane season isn’t over yet, but we are slowly moving up. After three months in Grenada, we came back to Carriacou and it feels like we are back home. Territorially, we are still in the state of Grenada, but geographically we are already in the Grenadines - a chain of 22 small volcanic Islands. There are no big hotels on Carriacou, and no large cruise ships come here. And the locals, those who live here, but were born in Grenada, proudly said that they are from the Mainland! Life here is simple and natural. In the wooden stalls they sell nutmeg and huge rolls of cinnamon bark. In the woods you can see strange white mushrooms, grazing goats, and the shore is swamped with conch shells. At the anchorage, you meet neighbors whose stories take you to the dimensions of novels on the scale of Gabriel GarcĂa Márquez. Sometimes in the evenings, the bars give birth to Blues and Boogie. But if you are really lucky you’ll listen to Zulu, playing traditional African drum music. At night, the rain echoes the Zulu drums and pounds the roofs of the houses and the hull of our boat - loudly, loudly. Here you can enjoy breakfast with papaya and coffee with chocolate grown and produced right here in neighboring Grenada. The road across the entire island takes less than an hour, but you drive all three, because the friends who show you the island stop to chat with almost everyone you meet. Wonderful, friendly people live here, and the whole walk you greet everyone and listen to compliments… They live in different houses, wooden and stone... In their gardens grow cabbage, tomatoes, mangos and papaya. And they, for sure, curse their fate that they live in this ass-end of nowhere and dream of going to America... But you can see the ocean from their windows!!! and reggae sounds everywhere. #cruising #circumnavigation #umadum #livingthedream #sailinglife #boatlife #gypsylife #cruisingislife #cruisingcatamatan #sailingcatamaran #carriacou (at Carriacou Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGXhMaRA48r/?igshid=1iq8yg3vi7s5o
For the last days we are anchored at Ronde Island known as the most expensive listed island property in the world. We’re absolutely alone here and the whole island just for two of us. And I was thinking how is it - to be the owner of a private island? What I will do if I would have been the owner of a private Caribbean kingdom? For sure I would never build a hotel for billionaires. Maybe just build a villa and sometimes rent out guest villas to help to cover running costs. I would make a botanical garden with wide variety of Caribbean trees, plants and flowers and a special laboratory will learn about medicinal plants and herbs. I would make a marine park to protect ecosystem of the island. I would make a research centre to study history and culture of pre-Columbian period of the Caribbean. And I would make a school where local kids can learn their culture and traditions - music, boat building, agriculture, fishing. I would invite farmers interested to grow local food in a traditional way and to raise cows and goats and poultry. And I would not ask them to pay any rent. I would make this island friendly for cruisers - free moorings and water. And I would make a small restaurant where guests of the island can order traditional local dishes. And I would talk to cruisers, listening their salty stories and finally... Yes, I would be bored on my beautiful island dealing with this and that all days around... and my gypsy soul will aspire to freedom. And I will rent out my glorious kingdom, buy a boat and start travel to discover new places and to meet new people. Ha-ha... That’s where we are now. We sail the world and stay in stunning places. We eat local food and grow our tiny botanical garden. We learn to understand different cultures. We enjoy the beauty of the ocean. And we make friends all over the world. So, now I’m not sure I want to be an owner of a private island... #cruising #circumnavigation #umadum #livingthedream #saltlife #sailinglife #gypsylife #liveadifferentlife #cruisingislife #cruisingcatamatan #sailingcatamaran #grenada #privateisland #lessismore (at Ronde Island) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFVDPQRgHAV/?igshid=1o2vfrfn64guk
Last week we were busy working on a new film. During this hurricane season, we found ourselves in the same bay with Guenther's dream catamarans - Atlantic by Chris White, Cyber by Tim Mumby and us - Looping by Patrick Luscher. Guess what now? We are making a film about PERFOMANCE CRUISING CATAMARAN. Last Sunday we went out for beautiful drone shots. Imagine - 3 beautiful sexy catamarans sailing together! Thanks to Jupiter2 and Segue for collaboration and their input to this film. A very special thanks to Andy for his generous help and adventurous spirit! Starting and landing the drone from a fast moving boat. Wow! (at Grenada, West Indies) https://www.instagram.com/p/CECqXiWg6hD/?igshid=qttgwvioo5ka
Do we have a plan? We’re always joking that the best plan for sailor is to have no plans. Now it's not funny at all. This year we wanted to go to Trinidad to a shipyard. We didn’t really WANT to, but it’s TIME to do it. It’s time to paint the boat, time to renew copper-coat (anti-fouling), time to repair engines. BUT… Trinidad is closed. A month ago, we had plans to sail to Panama, hoping that soon they would open San Blas for visiting - this option failed, because Panama tightens the COVID regulations and change them every week. Two weeks ago, we were planning to sail to Curacao - to stay away from the hurricane season and probably go to a shipyard - we canceled this option for visa reasons and also because returning to the East Caribbean against the wind and the current will not be easy at all. We look at the map like admirals during the war - where to move troops and when to go on the offensive and what is the plan of step-back. We are still in Grenada. We did not want to spend the hurricane season here, although officially Grenada is out of the hurricane belt, but storms and hurricanes do not know this, so there is a chance that they can come here. Especially this summer, expected as ABOVE AVERAGE season. So, our plans are completely uncertain - which countries will be open, how the hurricanes will behave. We stay in Grenada. A while. We have readiness number 1 to go to sea just in one hour. Sailing south if a hurrican approaches. In direction Surinam. And if their borders are closed, stay at sea and sail back north, when the storm is over. Thats the plan. For people, which have no plans normally… #cruising #circumnavigation #umadum #livingthedream #saltlife #sailinglife #gypsylife #liveadifferentlife #cruisingislife #cruisingcatamatan #sailingcatamaran #grenada https://www.instagram.com/p/CCrdAK9AW0A/?igshid=1rtpu2xsqyrzb

We sailed our Looping 45 along the South African coast. It was like a game. Waiting for a long enough weather window and sailing as fast as you can to the next harbour. And waiting again. This goes on your nerves. It’s not like sailing oceans. It is a continous race against the force of the nature.
We are back. And we sailed back from Carriacou to Prickley Bay in Grenada. A very strange feeling. We were here 3.5 months ago. Outwardly, nothing seemed to have changed - the same shores, the same wind, same boats are rolling by a southeast swell. But 3 months ago, we were looking forward to expore the Grenadines, preparing for the arrival of our kids. Now, 3 months later, we are looking forward to escape from the Grenada, and our kids are still sitting in Austria and the Emirates. 85 days of lockdown on island with ZERO cases. 85 days of meaninglessness. 85 days permanently eliminated from life. We didn’t sail for 3 months and we nearly forgot how to do it. Sorry we were not in the mood to share our dailylife during a lockdown. What a pleasure is it to look the life of a prisoner? But we spent this silly time with a joy and benefits: - We upload 3 new films to Umadum Sailing Youtube channel - Edited 2 new films about our South African and Namibian sailing. - Сame up with and start making 3 new films. - Made more than 20 new prints for our Etsy Shop. - YouTube monetized our Umadum Sailing channel - We shared more than 20 Turkish youghurt starters and thanks to this idea we became friends with many cruisers. - Planted quite a decent garden with many nice herbs - We recall how to catch lobsters - Enjoyed really simple things like looking at the water, whatching birds, snorkeling, baking bread, having film nights. Ok, we didn’t dive into self-improvement. We didn’t feel lonesome. We didn’t invent a new way to live simply life away from entertainment and pleasures. For a long time did it whiout being forced. It was our lifestyle chosen by ourselves. So, let’s see where we’re able to sail soon. And don’t forget to watch our new film «South Africa. Sailing Wild Coast” tomorrow on YouTube: http://youtube.com/c/UmadumSailing #cruising #circumnavigation #umadum #livingthedream #saltlife #sailinglife #gypsylife #liveadifferentlife #cruisingislife #grenada https://www.instagram.com/p/CBlfQoRg9xi/?igshid=7tct29prtls3

WAVE ART #115 What is speed? It’s the clouds stilly floating in the sky. It’s the sound of the oncoming waves. It’s the soft rustle of waves behind the stern. Our catamaran leaves behind two swirls - a sailing offroader on the virgin land of the ocean. Snow-white border between yesterday and tomorrow.
WAVE ART #114 A wonderful day in the middle of the Indian Ocean. 15 days behind us. 15 days to go. The sky is in it’s bluest blue. And the sun is painting the sails in golden colour. You hear only the sound of the waves, the whisper of the wind and the creaking of our rigging. Endless.

WAVE ART #113 Mutsamudu. Comoros islands. Anchoring in the harbour. On one side is the ocean, on the other side the steep green mountain. Volcanic origin. From the shore the light noise of this busy little town. The muezzin calling at sundown. And this light golden ocean ripples. Just a magic. Just a magic. WAVE ART #112 22 days at sea. Tired. You close your eyes. Not completely. Just a blink. And suddenly you see gold on blue. Or it is blue on gold? Doesn’t matter. WAVE ART #111 Cape Town. The border between The Indian Ocean and The South Atlantic Ocean. The border between the Roaring 40’s and The Cape of Good Hope. The clouds are crawling down from the Table Mountain. Going down to the Antarctica. Like the whales. The time of fog. Hiding your surrounding. And silhouettes appear out of the mist.

WAVE ART #109 What a mirror… A mystical mirror in Durban, South Africa. Just few hours ago a strong south-west wind was howling from the Antarctica and now a short break before another strong wind from the North-East brings its heat with the Aghulhas current. But now it’s the moment of quietness and serenity.
