On Edge-Engaging (Ambivalent): On Edge-Engaging individuals tend to be very good at attracting the attention and admiration of others around them. Generally, they employ one of two strategies to do so:

The Helpmate: Either these people become very hardworking and effective with regards to their real-life dealings and practical matters, so that they will naturally draw the attention and esteem of others who could use their help.

The Playmate: Or - more frequently - these individuals attract the attention of others by being extremely charming, colorful, or entertaining. Many have also developed considerable psychological facility for getting under the skin of others.

In both cases, On Edge-Engaging individuals adopt these strategies because they have a root feeling of ambivalence about others: They feel that others wouldn't notice them and give them their fair due without them being a good Helpmate or Playmate. But at the same time, they also detest others for making them put on this act just to get basic love and validation. In other words, Ambivalent personalities tend to alternate between being sensitive to others and neglecting them; between seeking intense intimacy and driving artificial barriers to closeness in between themselves and others. Some individuals of this type feel a deep-seated sense of injustice towards others for having been made to develop their Helpmate/Playmate persona, instead of just being loved as they are. Because they carry with them this representation of others as being unfair, some On Edge-Engaging individuals may find it easy to excuse themselves from their obligations, or for cheating and/or fudging the truth. In general, Ambivalent individuals tend to be quite good at psychological manipulation and getting others to do what they want, and they often have a high degree of sensitivity and accuracy to other people's emotional states. When in their good graces, being close to an Ambivalent personality may feel like heaven, but once they have decided that you are treating them unfairly, being close to them may easily feel like hell.

The puppet frowns at the response. Instinct. Their instinct, right now, is telling them to step away from the training ground. It wants to stop fighting. It wants to dismiss their blade so that their hands are free to grip the front of their cloak like it’d help alleviate the constricting pain within their chest. Their mind is a mess of hazy thoughts and rushing memories trying to reconstruct details from another lifetime they’ve experienced, and it’s all becoming so overwhelming that it almost forces them to their knees, wanting to cry out in agony.

But fear is what they listen to. They fear that if they do not follow orders, they will only go through worse. And what if they aren’t strong enough to endure that? What if they don’t last long enough to see their friends once again?

And so they draw a deep intake of breath, two, three, until hands shake no more as they tighten their hold on their keyblade’s grip, ignoring the painful flood of thoughts and pent-up emotions to focus on the floating Reapers before them. They’re finally ready to strike.

The intimidating features of a bear conceals his true face, and it is what initially drew the teen’s attention so quickly upon running into him.

Ceruleans steadily maintain their gaze with the mask’s ochre eyes, even though Xion knows that the steely glare of the creature doesn’t exactly portray what its wearer truly feels. It brings forth a bitter sensation when it reminds Xion that in their previous life (lives? They’ve ceased to exist once before and they’ve been reformed again, after all) their own true face had also been veiled from others’ sight. It took so long and it took a lot of work before anyone stopped considering Xion as just some faceless doll, and so they begin to worry that perhaps this stranger might also be struggling with a similar situation.

“It… sounds like an important mission,” they eventually speak up, staying right where they stand despite curiosity begging them to step closer to get a better look at the mask’s details (and perhaps catch a glimpse of his real face beneath?). “So does that mean it must be kept a secret from others if you must wear a mask like that? Do you at least allow your close friends to see you without it?”

They blink up at the man in stunned silence. Is it true that food costs so cheap in this World? Initially, they assumed that a single copper coin is roughly the equivalent of one munny but… Ah, they shouldn’t think too hard about it. And besides, they offered to prepare the Shield a meal out of the goodness of their non-existent Heart, not for currency.

“No, that’s alright, please keep it. I don’t know what I’d use it for anyway.” 

Cloak sleeves are then neatly rolled up to their elbows and leather gloves are discarded into pockets as they head over to their makeshift table of shipping crates, nestled next to their campfire. “Now, what kind of noodles would you prefer?”

While Xion can say that they’ve been to plenty of Worlds and that they’ve already witnessed plenty of strange happenings in their life, they must admit that this might just be the most bizarre and concerning thing to ever happen–

“Those people,” the teen struggles to get their response out, hurrying next to the blond’s side with the instinct to keep him safe pulsing within their core, “they just– they turned into monsters!” 

Xion soon notices that it’s as if the sun had vanished from the sky, too, leaving them stranded in the dimly lit street that’s beginning to look less like the place it had been before– the teen swears that just a minute ago, everything was bright and peaceful and there were crowds of people all around! Now it’s just… different. Everything seems warped, and there’s a hazy sensation that’s beginning to creep at the back of their mind making them wonder if they’ve simply found themself in the middle of a night-terror.

//an AU I keep gravitating towards each time ive remade my xion blogs but never ended up establishing is a Witch/Modern Magic type of situation, mostly bc im so fond of art/memory witch Namine and light magic often being used by the KH characters and also.. i love cats and corvids as;eifjf

anyway, i keep imagining xion as this childish being of the shadows that civilians keep mistaking as a young witch-in-training who’s always up to no good and whose powers aren’t strong or impressive, if only bc xion keeps hangin around other witches/magic-users and getting help from them or running errands for em. some even think xion’s useless, or will never become a powerful/well-known witch, and xi’s fine with it.

little do those people know that xion’s actually just a really powerful familiar. 

a helpful shapeshifter (whose preferred forms are a black cat, a black dog, and various types of corvids), and a very affectionate one, too. there doesn’t seem to be just one specific witch/magic-user that xion serves exclusively, though, as they’re known to help and accompany a handful of witches throughout the continent. xi takes up their human form most of the time as well. it’s just more fun socializing with civilians and magic-users that way.
