Sanya And Yura Are Fucking In Love And You Can't Do Shit About It: A Manifesto
Ever since the release of Parties Are For Losers on January 22nd, 2019, protagonist Yura Beletsky and deuteragonist Sanya Kazarina were flagged with romantic chemistry between the two of them. However, despite this, many have chosen to ignore or even deny the canonicity and reciprocal nature of this relationship. It has been just about two years of me fighting the war on Sanya/Yura, on the side of Sanya/Yura, and I thought it might be useful to compile my most common talking points into one easy link. So here we are. A list of evidence that the two of them are down fucking bad for each other.
PAFL's very first scene displays Yura at Molodyozhny, flirting with a girl, who invites him to "get out of here" (contextually clear that they're going to hook up). Here is the image (with additional notes from myself):
Hey, would you look at that? Her hair is grey, the same color as Sanya's, and the front part resembles her almost exactly.
Yura is flirting (and likely engaging in intercourse) with a girl who bears an incredibly striking resemblance to Sanya. It's unlikely that this is coincidental — especially considering the recent release of the PARTIES ARE FOR PLUSHIES promo video. This video depicts Sanya as a plushie. The only other character depicted as such?
That's right. It's the girl Yura sleeps with. Once again, she holds a strong resemblance to Sanya. This strongly suggests that Yura has an attraction to Sanya that he's trying to relieve via proxy.
PAFL also has this moment, where Yura introduces Katya and Sanya to each other. He's being remarkably (and dare I sat unnecessarily) clingy with Sanya, wrapling his arm around her shoulder and pulling her in close to him. Due to Sanya's blush, it can be concluded that this is far from a platonic gesture.
Moving on to False Disposition, I think the vast majority of fans likely can agree that Sanya is crushing on Yura in this video. However, many claim that it's one-sided, which is simply incorrect. I'll show why.
Yura is shown to tease Sanya a number of times, both with the end result (and likely the goal) of flustering her. The first instance even pokes fun at her obvious crush on him? Why is this interesting? Well, that's the exact behavior that he's said to exhibit towards people he's romantically interested in.
Teasing. Joking about it. Casually. He acts like it isn't a big deal, but he brings it up all the fucking time. This is, in fact, a reoccurring pattern of behavior throughout all of the series' materials, displayed by Yura and targeted exclusively towards Sanya. But we'll get to that later; we're currently still focused on False Disposition.
Yura loves parties. Yet, upon noticing Sanya's absence, he removes himself from the party — and the cute girl who's all over him! — immediately, in order to go find her. And what is the first thing he does upon finding her? He calls her "dear", an almost exclusively romantic term of endearment.
At the end of False Disposition, Sanya tries to tell Yura something, likely a confession of love, which he cuts her off from. Some believe this to be signifying that Yura doesn't return Sanya's feelings, but this couldn't be further from the truth. He outright tells her that he will be coming back from this mission alive and well, and that whatever she has to say to him can be said then. And he gives her his jacket, a gesture coded throughout decades as a romantic trope.
Now for Occam's Razor, a song which contains one of the most overt confirmations of Yura's feelings by far. There's a lot of ground to cover here.
First of all, the beginning of the song contains this exchange between Sanya and Yura, one which is easy to miss. In case the screenshots make it difficult to read, I've transcribed it below.
YURA: ...Ah, right. Can you give me a cig?
SANYA: You know I don't smoke!
Y: There's a pack in my jacket.
S: Oh.
Y: You really didn't check the pockets, huh?
S: How nosy do you think I am?!
Y: I dunno, could've stumbled upon that while sniffing it.
S: OH, %$@# YOU!
Once again, it's an example of Yura teasing Sanya about her feelings for him, which is a clear and canonical signifier of his romantic attraction. And the fact that this, of all things, was the dialogue Ferry chose to write and to put in the video, is quite telling. It wouldn't have been in the video if it wasn't important!
The reason why Yura is visiting Sanya in the first place, though, is to give her a sort of goodbye before cutting off contact. Now, why is he cutting off contact? It's nonsensical to believe that Yura is simply complying with Sergei's wishes just because he was asked to. We're shown countless examples of Yura disobeying Sergei, especially when it comes to Sanya. No, Yura intends to cut off Sanya because, for once, he believes that Sergei is right. He's terrified of hurting somebody who he loves so deeply. After all, what's one of Yura's greatest fears? Hurting others.
So, Yura comes to Sanya to cut her off. But then...
She hugs him. He feels warm. He's still concerned for her wellbeing, but her hug has clearly gotten through to him, at least a little. Really, this segment is incredibly understated in the document. The music video displays it like so:
Throughout all of Occam's Razor, it's been displayed in monochromatic screentone. All up until Sanya makes contact with Yura, and suddenly, the world bursts into color and life. He can't lose her, because she's the one thing that makes him feel this way. Is that not an incredibly obvious display of care? Of love?
Much like in Occam's Razor, Convergence and 100 Epitaphs both show Yura trying to keep Sanya as far away from the danger as possible. Yet another display of care.
Those are the clearest examples within the songs themselves. Now we'll move on to the Execution comic.
Even within the first few minutes of their meeting, Sanya's presence is distracting enough to Yura that he completely loses track of what is an incredibly vital conversation for him!
Cute? How interesting. One of the traits listed as being Yura's "type" on his crush sheet is "cute face".
And, since I'm real close to hitting image limit, here's a (VERY MUCH INCOMPLETE) collection of various other miscellaneous pieces of evidence, put together for your viewing pleasure.
Thank you for reading! I can't take this torment any longer.
