The whole Riko Roast is a masterpiece but in particular the line "Kevin and I talk about your intricate and endless daddy issues all the time" gets me every time because no the fuck they do not!!! Neil just made that up for the drama!!!! He thought hmmmm... what will make this fucker the angriest and then he held nothing back. Neil threw Kevin's ass right under the bus without a second thought just to see Riko's face twitch. Iconic.

Aftg is such a trip because like. The timing is objectively off. It's better that way. It's badly written but actually no it's not. Here's a whole new sport. We lied, its just lacrosse in a silly hat. Trauma galore. By all known laws of book tropes, the main couple should be toxic as hell. They're too cagey and paranoid and possessive not to be. But the main couple, not caring about trope law, creates the healthiest relationship ever written anyways. It's problematic as fuck. It's the best series ever. It's completely unrecommendable. It's gay, but not how you think it'll be in the first book. You'll hate it the first time you read it. Six months later you'll have a whole blog for it.

Aftg isn't a book, it's a fucking experience.

So i'm back from holiday and on my 13 hour flight all i could think about was Neil being so attentive of Andrew when he first learns he's afraid of heights and flying. The way he keeps an eye on Andrew before take off, the way he closes the shutter on the plane window, which i'm assuming is so Andrew doesn't have to see the take off or landing from the corner of his eye (which i can tell you from experience helps bc i too am afraid of heights and this used to help my flying anxiety a lot). Also the way he pays so much attention to Andrew that he notices the way he stops fiddling with his pen throughout the entire process of the ascent.

I feel like this moment is so underrated because to me Neil's mind tends to run a hundred miles an hour and while he so obviously notices these things he doesn't tend to dwell on them or at least he doesn't acknowledge how they make him feel they're just matter of fact to him. Like for example how Andrew doesn't like to be touched so Neil doesn't touch him without his consent. So Neil watches Andrew carefully as he boards the plane to see if he'll panic, he watches him as the plane takes off. He sees the hints of anxiety and he acts accordingly i.e keeping an eye on him and closing the window shutter.

Neil pays attention and then takes the necessary steps to make Andrew comfortable and i find that so goddamn beautiful it kinda makes my own heart skip a beat.

(Now lets just imagine all the future flights they have to take for games and Neil, instead of a lousy pen, offering up his hand to Andrew for him to fiddle with before flights, and to grip tightly during take offs and landings. Rubbing his thumb gently over the back of Andrews hand to sooth his anxiety. Neil providing a source of comfort and safety for Andrew's fears, telling him "i've got you, you're safe with me")
