One weekend, Lord Mountbatten was crammed sideways in the back of an open-top sports car being driven rapidly across his Broadlands estate by his nephew Prince Philip, with the Queen sitting in the front beside him. Why do you let him treat you like that?’ ‘It’s quite simple,’ replied Elizabeth, smiling happily. ‘I didn’t want to walk!’
