evaluation part 1
At our first meeting we brainstormed ideas based around ‘Underground Cultures’, discussed aesthetic, content and group logistics. We soon decided to look at fanzines and the DIY, low-fi aesthetic with which they are associated. The group wanted to ensure that we didn’t fall into clichés with the content – e.g. we were not going to be looking at punk! At this stage we looked at subverting the theme, and basing the newspaper on the Subway in Glasgow, and the culture that surrounds it – particularly the SubCrawl (Subway pubcrawl) with each person having a stop to research and explore. We also decided to use Facebook and Tumblr in order to keep in contact over the 2 weeks and share our progress with one another. When we met with Andy we found that we would be one person down in our team and decided that we would use the extra spread in order to have a contents type page.
At this point most of the group were a little confused as to what exactly we were doing and the next day had another meeting to discuss the content. We then changed direction with the content of our newspaper and each person was to research individually into unusual and relatively unknown subcultures. When we re-grouped and all fed our research back to everyone else, we collectively helped those who were unsure of the direction to follow and noticed a ‘scale of strangeness’ in the individual spread topics – a theme we thought could work on the contents page. We also considered the front page and agreed on a mostly text based cover, with images placed into the text – a ‘peephole’ into the content of the paper. At this point we split into 2 groups – one to work on the text for the front cover in the case room and the other to start developing visuals for the contents page. In the caseroom, Vicky and Sarah printed the text for the front cover for each person's spread. The rest of us began to generate ideas for the contents page, a necessary addition to make up the correct number of spreads since our group was one person short. We decided on a basic template but found that it could not be entirely finished until each person's spread had been completed.
The next day, one half of the group returned to the caseroom to print the titles and numbers. The other half of the group chose imagery from each theme and placed it behind the front cover text.
From this point, we started to use this tumblr more actively and so you can trace our development below.
Contents placement?
Don't worry about pixelated images, I just didn't have overview preview on when taking the screen shot!
Either the text should be split over two pages, or we need 4 columns of text to make it look balanced.
Probably my final spread.
a lighter background??
can anyone tell me vicky's email? xx
Is it ok??
Should I put the text more clear?
Gunslingers spread.
bit worried iv turned our lovely typeface into a sort of bubble font...
contrast of whites/blacks would be corrected, page less grey.
The last spread had the wrong dimensions. This is mk2.
not really getting anywhere yet...
