Thrilled to present a paper titled “Regeneration of Sujan Singh Park” - at the 16th International #DOCOMOMO conference Tokyo Japan 2020+1. Sujan Singh Park is the oldest multi-storied housing complex in #NewDelhi. The paper is based on original archival research carried out in New Delhi and London and on learnings from the pilot phase of the regeneration project which was delivered between 2016 and 2019 by Under Mango Tree Architects. There is a rich diversity of modern housing in India and apart from the well-known examples by the modern masters; much of it remains undocumented or poorly researched. There is a growing need to widen current definitions, create awareness and to develop a much wider understanding of this type of heritage. At a time when #modernhousing is being condemned in New Delhi and is being demolished, the regeneration of SSP offers an alternative, incremental conservation-led approach to redevelopment of our cities. By critically reflecting on the lessons of modern housing we can address the current housing crisis in #cities and begin to think about creating #sustainable and #resilient cities for the future.
