mental issues kept me in a stunlock where i had to finish this before i could do any other artistic stuff. i wanted to explain my artistic choices, so if you want to see what you understand from the piece first don't read this yet.
this piece was made out of spite in a way. i guess i was just getting continuously frustrated that i couldn't ever seem to express how much depth i see in swatch in a way that was satisfactory to me, and i'm really over how other people see them. writing about them wasn't enough. so, here's an art piece as well.
on the top left, swatch is drawn with a stern face, a shadow over their glasses as they talk to someone off-screen. their arms are behind their back, not showing all of themself the way their glasses do the same. this is meant to show their typical demeanor, mostly emotionless, upfront, proper. queen is shown in her usual fashion, enjoying life, giving orders, celebrating herself and her subjects by commissioning art from her right-hand bird. below her are the swatchlings, those who swatch oversees and helps them keep things they way they should be. all meant to exemplify swatch's role and job here, and how important queen and the swatchlings are to them.
under that is the luxurious inhabitants of queen's mansion, with swatch and their close colleague tasque manager standing side by side. in their shadow are the common folk of cyber world, not considered on the same level as them. this is to show how they uphold a class system. to the right of these is swatch determining what isn't "correct", and to the left of these is swatch serving dark dollars, meant to signify their wealth and how money matters in cyber city. as a whole, this section is meant to incorporate their goofy-ass dialogue in chapter 5, showing that they have poor values regarding status and everyone's ""place"" in the world like ralsei does.
the lower portion of the piece is situated here to show the feelings that swatch pushes underneath their outward mask. swatch is drawn naked since this is what they're like without covering anything, their raw self. they look at the viewer in shock. you're not supposed to know what they're thinking.
under the cash is a line of swatchlings following a path, while swatch looks away from their direction. i wanted to show swatch having an interest in not following orders and in a way not upholding the status quo, since they're shown in-game to have displeasure in following orders. inadvertently, they're also looking to nobody/mettaton, the most likely candidate for who created the NEO robot in the light world.
i believe swatch is haunted by NEO like fucking crazy, but it's not something they want to think about. as much as they try, NEO is all they can think about sometimes. they can't push aside the way its abandonment left a hollowness inside them. this is why one of the wings of NEO is at the forefront of it all, nobody's tears forming into it, while the glitchy lost dream continues to leak downward, hitting someone else. their color swatches and papers that have been scribbled out float in this space, showing swatch's interest in creating art for themselves, a desire they feel to be selfish and improper. they look up at nobody with pain in their eyes, his divine light not quite reaching them.
spamton is the lowest point of this piece, colored in dark blue like the common folk of cyber world, a person of low status. swatch doesn't want to think about him, pushed all the way down. he represents exactly what swatch feels like they can't be, yet it's him who made them realize that a darkner could even stray away from what they're made for. they try to tell themselves that he's the one who's wrong, because what they're doing has to be right. there has to be something noble in abandoning him, something good in how they do everything they're told and uphold the status quo.
he turns around from his old addison self, what swatch remembers him as, suddenly shifting to his current form, whatever he was deteriorating from haunting them. is that what happens when you stray away? they don't want to know. they don't want to see the cruelty for themselves.

damn all that for a side character-- yes. obviously.
looked at the personalities thing in tomodachi life and seeing tenna and crash bandicoot next to each other as having the same personality type made me laugh
watching jerma and he just said "i wonder how many people are slamming their desk right now because i haven't played deltarune" IT'S ME!!! I''M ONE OF THEM it's because he clearly really enjoyed chapter 2 so it's like??? c'mon man you'd love the rest of it so far
i think getting people to question every single thing they think and do is not healthy even if it's for a reason that might seem good. that's what OCD is. i can tell you from experience that nothing about OCD is beneficial to anyone even if you think it's for 'the right reason'
not saying that you shouldn't care about being good to others or make an effort to do so. it's worth it to be caring about others. but sometimes i see people express sentiments that encourage constantly monitoring yourself for errors and it's a slope that's not worth going down
i wrote another.. deltarune thing even though i was on the fence about doing this kind of thing again. but i ended up really liking how it came out.
i see swatch as someone dedicated to their role as a darker and as queen's right hand bird, finding fulfillment in what they do, but having this hollow feeling after years of doing the same thing over and over. i've always felt that there's this underlying feeling of not truly being satisfied with their role, but any uncertainty or qualms about "the way things should be" and "everyone having a place in the world" is pushed down.
them thinking that it's not appropriate for them to be worried about their swatchlings ("My apologies. This is no time to reminisce."). the ignoring of more difficult topics until they had no choice to speak ("What? Basement? There's no basement here.", "Some even going so far as to attempt to impersonate me… In order to get the… Oh, nevermind. Macaron?"). the purposeful lack of any other expression. in an ironic way, i see the things people bring up as evidence for swatch being an asshole as evidence for another layer of depth they have being concealed.
i think ralsei and swatch mirror each other with how they're resigned to do what they must and keep the order of their respective worlds, and despite the ass dialogue for swatch in ch5, this is still true between them as of now. ralsei continuously telling flowery that he can't just do whatever he wants because things aren't supposed to be this way or another made me think of how swatch was trying to make susie conform to a certain standard to fit what they thought was appropriate.
so, overall, i interpret them as someone with the mask of a polite servant, but has an underlying frustration and pessimism for what they have to do.
in regards to this, this is why i like thinking about their relationship with spamton, because he inherently challenges their world view. nearly everything about him is what swatch can't be, small, defiant, chaotic, ambitious and doing whatever it is he wants. it's the same thing in reverse, given that spamton wants to call his own shots and get away from people controlling him while swatch must listen to the orders they're given.
i think swatch avoids talking/thinking about him because he makes them question their own values, and they can't possibly be doing that. he has to be the one that's wrong. swatch has to be the one that's morally superior to him, even though they're the one who abandoned him. with both of their collective issues, there is an opportunity for growth between these two, and it's hard for me to not get invested in such a thing when i value people improving very much.
now, i heavily dislike interpretations of swatch where they're more of an asshole because i find it boring and reductive honestly. there's little to be invested in a rigid character like that. to me, swatch has more going on than simply someone who listens to whoever's calling the shots and sees those who aren't with them as below them. i see swatch's annoyance/negativity in their in-game lines as a clear cause and effect, as well as an indicator of what i was talking about eariler. i'll copy and paste what i wrote elsewhere:
everything they've been annoyed at is fairly reasonable. this whole time, they've just been expressing their gripes at things that make sense to be bothered by. which is why i've been so eh about how people interpret that as being their primary character trait…. like what are you expecting someone to do? not talk about it?
like.. guy showing up demanding a job at your workplace making a huge mess and hitting on your co-worker? yeah go kick his ass he's being disruptive. dude wants the castle town cafe even though he has an entire bakery shaped like him already? yeah go send him back to his establishment (and swatch shows some remorse if the swatchlings aren't with them, referring to what they did as cruel). ex-friend stole that sacred thing you helped make? yeah get upset over it. having to wear something embarrassing for work? makes sense to be annoyed !

also…. i think that when people talk shit about acid theory but still insist that swatch is a massive asshole, it's funny that they think they're so different from the people they're complaining about.
i gave up on writing my perspective on a topic because i feel like every time i have, barely anyone has considered it. i also just tend to be ignored in general. but there's always this goddamn thing in my head that's like "maybe it'll be different this time". maybe it's cause there's been the handful of times over several years that people did consider what i said. but there's been way more people not wanting to even entertain my ideas. so it's just ""insanity"" at that point to think that doing and saying the same things will get people to consider things differently, right?
one of my favorite things about jerma is that he'll be like "i can't do this, this is fucked up! this is so fucked up!" while doing the very thing he thinks is fucked up. the chat doesn't have to convince him either he just does that on his own
