Why Bangaranga is a masterpiece, why it did so well with the juries and the magic of tempo changes
I'm not really there for the "masterpiece" claim - but holy fuck the tempo changes!
This is the part that got me hooked:
One of these things is the tempo change. Did you notice it immediately when you heard the instrumental part – the „hook“? Well, actually, I did the math and there are 20 tempo changes in the song. If you wanted to click perfectly in sync with the song (I used the Spotify version as a reference) you would have to do the following programming to your metronome: bar 1 – 136 BPM, 24 – 112 BPM, 25 – 115 BPM, 26 – 118 BPM, 27 – 121 BPM, 28 – 124 BPM, 29 – 128 BPM, 30 – 132 BPM, 31 – 134 BPM, 32 – 136 BPM, 55 – 129 BPM, 55.3 – 118 BPM, bars 56 to 64 – same as 24 to 32. On the picture attached you can see the red line which indicates BPM and the massive drop from 136 to 112 (when the hook starts around 0:42) and a slow climb back to 136. This happens twice in the song, and the very last hook plays full-tempo. This is a brilliant production move and exactly what gives the song its crazy – and a little bit chaotic – Bangaranga feel.
Tempos changing to 1/2 time and back in pop music are not unusual, along with time signature changes. This is different, and much more unusual, at least in western music pop music.
